Article Synopsis
  • Methanol poisoning is dangerous due to the toxic formate produced during its metabolism, and measuring blood formate levels is crucial for treatment and understanding fatal cases.
  • In a study, there were discrepancies between formate levels measured by a formate assay kit and a more accurate method (HS-GC--MS), with the kit showing higher values.
  • The formate assay kit's results were influenced by the presence of lactate and methanol, which could lead to inaccurate measurements, but these cross-reactions might still allow for quick diagnosis in situations where advanced equipment isn't available.

The N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor 2B-selective antagonist ifenprodil induced morphological changes which were characterized by cell shrinkage, nuclear condensation or fragmentation, and internucleosomal DNA fragmentation in rat cultured cortical cells. Ifenprodil increased the apoptotic cell death in a dose-dependent manner (0.5-10 microM).
