Purpose: We investigated the relationship between the resected stomach measurements, the incidence of delayed gastric emptying (DGE), and food residue 1 year after surgery in patients who underwent laparoscopic pylorus-preserving gastrectomy (PPG).

Materials And Methods: The DGE group included 10 patients fasting due to nausea, vomiting, abdominal distension, or remnant stomach distension on radiographs; the control group included 36 patients without these symptoms. We compared the size and length of lesser and greater curvatures of the resected stomach and endoscopic findings after 1 year.

Laser thermal therapy is one of the treatments for malignant tumors. We developed a thermal endoscope using an ultra-compact thermo-sensor and established a new laparoscopic laser thermal therapy system to heat cancer tissue at an appropriate temperature, focusing on the fact that thermographic cameras are capable of two-dimensional temperature mapping. Hepatocellular carcinoma (N1S1) cells were implanted into the livers of Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 13) to create orthotopic hepatocellular carcinoma.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the tolerability of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in elderly patients (≥ 76 years) with esophageal cancer, as previous trials excluded this age group despite showing survival benefits.
  • Out of 174 patients, those aged 76 and older (E group) received NAC less frequently and had a lower completion rate compared to younger patients (Y group), along with lower relative dose intensity (RDI) of the chemotherapy drugs used.
  • Elderly patients experienced more severe adverse events, particularly neutropenia, suggesting they may be more sensitive to the toxic effects of NAC, indicating the need for careful case selection and potential dose adjustments for this demographic.

  • Inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) is a benign growth made up of inflammatory cells and fibrous tissue, particularly notable in cases relating to IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD).
  • A 75-year-old woman with rectal cancer showed a low-density liver mass, initially diagnosed as cholangiolocellular carcinoma, but later confirmed as IgG4-related hepatic IPT through histopathological examination.
  • Accurate diagnosis of IgG4-related hepatic IPT can be challenging, highlighting the importance of considering IgG4-RD in liver tumor evaluations and performing thorough histological analysis.

Platelet-related measures are considered important in predicting long-term outcomes in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). We performed a systematic electronic research of studies evaluating the prognostic value of platelet-related measures in ESCC in Google Scholar, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase. Then, to synthesize publications exploring the association between platelet-related measures and survival outcomes in ESCC, a meta-analysis was conducted using hazard ratio and 95 % confidence interval.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) influences long-term survival for gastric cancer patients, especially those dealing with postoperative infectious complications (PIC).
  • 608 patients were divided into two groups: those who had LG (385 patients) and those who had open gastrectomy (OG: 211 patients), then survival outcomes were compared based on the presence of PIC.
  • Results showed that while PIC worsened survival outcomes in OG patients, it did not significantly affect the overall survival in LG patients, indicating that LG might have a better prognosis despite complications.

Little is known about the association between sarcopenia development after gastrectomy and gastric cancer prognosis after recurrence. The present study retrospectively examined the effects of decreased psoas muscle index (PMI) on post-recurrence prognosis after gastrectomy. A total of 67 patients with gastric cancer recurrence were included in the present study.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to create a new systemic inflammatory score (SIS) using ratios like neutrophil-to-lymphocyte (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte (PLR), and C-reactive protein/albumin ratio (CAR) to predict outcomes for patients undergoing esophageal cancer surgery.
  • - Involving 102 patients, it found that a higher SIS (2-3) correlated with poorer survival compared to a lower SIS (0-1), with SIS showing the best prognostic power among the measures tested (AUROC of 0.732).
  • - Additionally, the high-SIS group showed significant relationships with specific cytokine levels, such as lower IL-6 and higher IL-10

Background/aim: In recent years, platelet-related markers were recognized as useful prognostic factors in various malignancies. We investigated the relationship between platelet-related prognostic markers and anti-platelet or anti-coagulant therapies for survival outcomes in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Patients And Methods: Preoperative platelet-related prognostic markers were evaluated from peripheral blood testing and statistical analyses were performed to evaluate the prognostic value of these markers and reveal the effects of antiplatelets and/or anticoagulants regarding their prognostic relevance.

Background: Trastuzumab (T-mab)-based chemotherapy is a standard regimen for human epithelial growth factor 2 (HER2)-positive gastric cancer. However, some patients have demonstrated a change in HER2 status after T-mab-based treatment of breast cancer. We report a rare case of mixed adenoneuroendocrine carcinoma with loss of HER2 positivity after T-mab-based chemotherapy for HER2-positive gastric cancer.

It has been reported that immuno-inflammatory and nutritional parameters are associated with long-term survival in various malignancies. However, little is known regarding the associations between alterations of these parameters during neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and the response to NAC in patients with esophageal cancer. The present study examined the clinical significance of alterations in these parameters during NAC in terms of the response to NAC and the long-term outcomes in patients with esophageal cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between serum levels of HMGB-1, a protein linked to sepsis and complications after surgery, and various clinical factors in patients undergoing esophagectomy for esophageal cancer.
  • Researchers found that postoperative HMGB-1 levels were significantly higher than preoperative levels and correlated with factors like intraoperative bleeding, ICU stay duration, and patient age.
  • Higher postoperative HMGB-1 levels were associated with worse long-term survival outcomes, suggesting that monitoring these levels could help predict complications and patient prognosis after surgery.

  • Pneumatosis intestinalis (PI) is a rare condition that can occur following chemotherapy, as illustrated by a 70-year-old man who developed it after receiving cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil for esophageal cancer.
  • After experiencing acute abdominal pain, CT scans showed extensive PI in the colon but no signs of ischemia, leading to a decision for conservative treatment.
  • By Day 7, follow-up CT scans showed that the PI had resolved, allowing the patient to successfully undergo surgery without complications, highlighting the importance of recognizing and managing PI conservatively in patients undergoing CF therapy.
