Depression is a prevalent mental disorder, but the side effects of antidepressants also make depressed patients resistant. Effective and safe antidepressants should be developed from traditional herbs, with the aim of reducing the side effects of antidepressants and improving the efficacy of drugs. In this study, the new macamide compound-4 (NMC-4) was synthesized for the first time, addressing the problem of difficult extraction, isolation, and low content of natural macamide.

Article Synopsis
  • Psoraleae Fructus (PF), a traditional medicine known for treating various diseases, is increasingly linked to adverse reactions, especially liver injury.
  • Recent studies found that PF and its component bavachinin activate the inflammasome pathway, leading to inflammation and liver damage in mouse models.
  • Inhibitors of specific inflammasomes and antioxidants like N-Acetylcysteine amide can reduce the harmful effects of PF and bavachinin, suggesting they should be avoided in patients susceptible to inflammasome-related diseases.

Podocytes are specialized terminally differentiated cells in the glomerulus that are the primary target cells in many glomerular diseases. However, the current podocyte cell lines suffer from prolonged in vitro differentiation and limited survival time, which impede research progress. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a cell line that exhibits superior performance and characteristics.

To explore the mechanism of Lingguizhugan Decoction in treating hypertension based on network pharmacology and molecular simulation. The active ingredients and potential targets were screened by the Systematic Pharmacological Analysis Platform of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCMSP). Hypertension-related targets were obtained from OMIM and GeneCards databases.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Dictamnus dasycarpus Turcz. (Dictamni Cortex, DC), a Chinese herbal medicine, is commonly used for treating chronic dermatosis and rheumatism, but can also cause herb-induced liver injury (HILI). Our study has demonstrated that DC can induce idiosyncratic HILI, but the mechanism remains unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of Xiao-Ke-Yin (XKY), a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula consisting of nine herbs, in treating metabolic diseases like diabetes, obesity, and hyperlipidemia in db/db mice.
  • XKY was shown to improve key health indicators such as blood glucose levels, insulin sensitivity, and liver health when administered in varying doses over six weeks, outperforming the positive control metformin in some aspects.
  • The research also explored the underlying mechanisms behind XKY's effects, revealing that it regulates cholesterol biosynthesis and maintains gut health, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic option for metabolic disorders.

Although tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) constitutes a promising antitumor drug, tumor resistance to TRAIL has become a major obstacle in its clinical application. Mitomycin C (MMC) is an effective TRAIL-resistant tumor sensitizer, which indicates a potential utility of combination therapy. However, the efficacy of this combination therapy is limited owing to its short half-life and the cumulative toxicity of MMC.

The biology and diversity of glomerular parietal epithelial cells (PECs) are important for understanding podocyte regeneration and crescent formation. Although protein markers have revealed the morphological heterogeneity of PECs, the molecular characteristics of PEC subpopulations remain largely unknown. Here, we performed a comprehensive analysis of PECs using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data.

The novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) has created great demands for medical resources. Determining these demands timely and accurately is critically important for the prevention and control of the pandemic. However, even if the infection rate has been estimated, the demands of many medical materials are still difficult to estimate due to their complex relationships with the infection rate and insufficient historical data.

Aggression is a common and complex social behavior that is associated with violence and mental diseases. Although sex differences were observed in aggression, the neural mechanism for the effect of sex on aggression behaviors remains unclear, especially in specific subscales of aggression. In this study, we investigated the effects of sex on aggression subscales, gray matter volume (GMV), and functional connectivity (FC) of each insula subregion as well as the correlation of aggression subscales with GMV and FC.

The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is considered the largest immunological organ, with a diverse gut microbiota, that contributes to combatting pathogens and maintaining human health. Under physiological conditions, the crosstalk between gut microbiota and intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) plays a crucial role in GIT homeostasis. Gut microbiota and derived metabolites can compromise gut barrier integrity by activating some signaling pathways in IECs.

A variety of podocyte antigens have been identified in human membranous nephropathy (MN), which is divided into various antigen-dominated subtypes, confirming the concept that MN is the common pattern of glomerular injury in multiple autoimmune responses. The detection of autoantibodies, which has been widely used in the clinical practice of MN, may lead to personalized precision medicine. However, given the potential risks of immunosuppressive therapy, more autoantibodies and biomarkers need to be identified to predict the prognosis and therapeutic response of MN more accurately.

The mental rotation task is a particular spatial skill that helps people process visual information and is associated with intelligence and academic performance. Previous studies have found consistent sex difference in mental rotation. However, the neural mechanism of the sex-related difference in mental rotation remains unclear.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is overexpressed in a wide range of solid tumors. In this study, we exploited a high-affinity EGFR-antagonistic affibody (Z) coupled to a doxorubicin loaded pegylated liposome (LS-Dox) for concurrent passive and active targeting of EGFR A431 tumor cells in vitro and in vivo. The in vitro studies revealed that the Dox liposomes coupled with Z (AS-Dox) showed a higher Dox uptake than LS-Dox in EGFR A431 cells but not in EGFR B16F10 cells, resulting in a selectively enhanced cytotoxicity.

Vascular centerlines have crucial significance in reconstruction, registration, segmentation and vascular parameter analysis. The extraction of vessel structures remains a difficult problem in the completeness and continuity of results. In this paper, we present a novel method to extract cerebrovascular centerlines from four-dimensional computed tomography angiography images.

Individual farmers represent the main management entities of agricultural production under the family-contract responsibility system in China, and thus play crucial roles in the prevention and control of agricultural nonpoint source (ANPS) pollution. The analysis of the farmers' perceptions of ANPS pollution as well as the factors affecting their perceptions can provide valuable information for relevant policy-making to preserve high quality water in Poyang Lake and regional quality of arable land. Through a survey titled 'Farmers' perceptions of ANPS pollution and farming behaviors in the Poyang Lake Region', the data related to the perceptions of farmers on ANPS pollution were collected.
