Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how various disinfectants, electrolytes, and levels of viscosity affect the accuracy of the Oral Bacteria Counter, a device used for counting bacteria in dental practices.
  • Results showed that certain disinfectants, like 5% chlorhexidine and 7% povidone-iodine, can produce false high readings by detecting non-viable bacteria.
  • Higher viscosity negatively impacted bacterial counts, while saline electrolytes significantly increased readings, underscoring the differences between the Oral Bacteria Counter and methods that specifically measure only viable bacteria.

Nukadoko, a fermented rice bran bed for pickling vegetables called nukazuke, has a complex microbiota. Within it, deep interactions between the microbiota of the pickled vegetables and nukadoko characterize and control the qualities of both products. To address this notion, we monitored the changes in the microbiota of nukadoko and nukazuke while pickling different vegetables.

Information about the concordance between dynamic emotional experiences and objective signals is practically useful. Previous studies have shown that valence dynamics can be estimated by recording electrical activity from the muscles in the brows and cheeks. However, whether facial actions based on video data and analyzed without electrodes can be used for sensing emotion dynamics remains unknown.

Aspiration pneumonia can occur in perioperative and older patients, and various oral care methods have been used to prevent it. To validate the effective oral care methods, measuring bacterial counts before and after oral care is necessary. However, isolating and quantifying viable bacteria from those that are inactivated by agents used in oral care is not possible.

Article Synopsis
  • - Patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) showed a higher rate of non-attendance for medical appointments compared to those with focal epilepsy (FE), with a non-attendance rate of 4.5% based on a study tracking over 9,000 appointments.
  • - Factors influencing non-attendance included being a recipient of public assistance (increased odds) and having higher education, living farther from the hospital, or attending more frequent visits (decreased odds).
  • - Among female patients with generalized epilepsy, there was a lower frequency of non-attendance, but overall, no significant differences in non-attendance were observed between IGE and juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME).

In a world that seeks precision medicine, genetic testing is gaining importance in clinical decision making. We previously reported the utility of a novel tool for longitudinally dividing core needle biopsy (CNB) tissues into two filamentous tissues that can provide paired mirror image-like tissues (mirror-tissues) that spatially match each other. In this study, we investigated its application in gene panel testing in patients who underwent prostate CNB.
