Background: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a complicated pathological cascade process of excessive pulmonary inflammation and alveolar epithelial cell apoptosis that results in respiratory dysfunction and failure. Some cases of ARDS can result in a more severe state of pulmonary fibrosis, referred to as postinjury lung fibrosis. The mortality and incidence rate of ARDS are high, particularly when it leads to continuing alveolar and interstitial fibrosis, which requires urgent treatment and appropriate management.

Introduction: Previous reviews have often concluded that open-skill sports are more effective at enhancing executive function (EF) than closed-skill sports. However, this conclusion may not hold for closed-skill sports with high cognitive demands, such as golf. This study aimed to compare the effects of football (open-skill) and golf (closed-skill) training on enhancing EF in university students.

Due to the high stability and less maintenance, the radio frequency (RF) driven ion source is preferred for the neutral beam injection (NBI) system. In a popular design of the RF ion source for NBI application, a Faraday shield (FS) is installed inside the RF plasma driver to protect the discharge tube. However, the FS also brings some drawbacks, such as lowering the RF power transfer and increasing the processing difficulty.

Inelastic n-changing collisions play an important role in the evolution of Rydberg atoms into ultracold plasmas. However, for the initially intermediate n (n ∼ 40) Rydberg states, these collisions can hardly be observed due to the low electron temperature in ultracold plasmas. In this work, we designed an experimental scheme to facilitate collisions between free electrons at 1.

The transition metal-catalyzed asymmetric hydro-functionalization of 1,3-dienes has been well explored, but most reactions focus on electron-neutral substrates in an intermolecular manner. Here we first demonstrate that readily available 2,4-dienyl hydrazones and oximes can be efficiently utilized in the hydro-cyclization reaction under co-catalysis of a Brønsted acid and a chiral palladium complex, furnishing multifunctional dihydropyrazones and dihydroisoxazoles, respectively. Diverse substitution patterns for both types of electron-deficient diene compounds are tolerated, and corresponding heterocycles were generally constructed with moderate to excellent enantioselectivity, which can be elaborated to access products with higher molecular complexity and diversity.

Phase-sensitive measurements on a composite ring made of a superconductor of interest connected by a known singlet s-wave superconductor can unambiguously determine its pairing symmetry. In composite rings with epitaxial β-Bi_{2}Pd and s-wave Nb, we have observed half-integer-quantum flux when Nb is connected to the opposite crystalline ends of β-Bi_{2}Pd and integer-quantum flux when Nb is connected to the same crystalline ends of β-Bi_{2}Pd. With ascending temperature, the half-integer-flux quantization transits to integer-flux quantization, before the eventual loss of phase coherence.

Magnetic imaging with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) spins in diamond is becoming an established tool for studying nanoscale physics in condensed matter systems. However, the optical access required for NV spin readout remains an important hurdle for operation in challenging environments such as millikelvin cryostats or biological systems. Here, we demonstrate a scanning-NV sensor consisting of a diamond nanobeam that is optically coupled to a tapered optical fiber.

Nucleocapsid (N) protein plays crucial roles in the life cycle of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), including the formation of ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex with the viral RNA. Here we reported the crystal structures of the N-terminal domain (NTD) and C-terminal domain (CTD) of the N protein and an NTD-RNA complex. Our structures reveal a unique tetramer organization of NTD and identify a distinct RNA binding mode in the NTD-RNA complex, which could contribute to the formation of the RNP complex.
