Background: Prevention and early intervention of alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a public health priority, yet there are gaps in our understanding of how AUD emerges, which symptoms of AUD come first, and whether there are modifiable risk factors that forecast the development of the disorder. This study investigated potential early-warning-sign symptoms for the development of AUD.

Methods: Data were from the RADAR study, a prospective cohort study of contemporary emerging adults across Australia (n = 565, mean age = 18.

The acquisition of microbial symbionts enables animals to rapidly adapt to and exploit novel ecological niches, thus significantly enhancing the evolutionary fitness and success of their hosts. However, the dynamics of host-microbe interactions and their evolutionary implications remain largely underexplored in marine invertebrates. Crabs of the family Sesarmidae (Crustacea: Brachyura) are dominant inhabitants of mangrove forests and are considered keystone species there.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at how many teenagers in Australia use more than one substance, like alcohol and drugs, and how their use changes as they grow up.
  • Researchers followed almost 2,000 teens and their parents over several years, asking them about their substance use and other factors like family issues and friends' habits.
  • They found that while very few teens started using multiple substances at a young age, this number increased significantly as they got older, and many factors like family and friends' behaviors were linked to these changes.

Introduction: Drug detection dogs are utilised across multiple settings, however existing literature focuses predominantly on festival-based encounters. We compare drug dog encounters in non-festival settings among two samples of people who regularly use drugs, and investigate factors associated with witness only versus stop and/or search encounters.

Methods: Australians who regularly (i.

Background And Aims: There have been few systematic attempts to examine how alcohol-related mortality has changed in Australia, and no studies that have explored cohort effects in alcohol-related mortality. This study uses more than 50 years of data to measure age, period and cohort trends in alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) mortality.

Design, Setting And Cases: This was a retrospective age-period-cohort analysis of total Australian ALD mortality data from 1968 to 2020 in Australia.

Objectives: A partnership model in interprofessional education (IPE) is important in promoting a sense of global citizenship while preparing students for cross-sector problem-solving. However, the literature remains scant in providing useful guidance for the development of an IPE programme co-implemented by external partners. In this pioneering study, we describe the processes of forging global partnerships in co-implementing IPE and evaluate the programme in light of the preliminary data available.

Background And Aims: Alcohol consumption is a leading risk factor for premature mortality globally, but there are limited studies of broader cohorts of people presenting with alcohol-related problems outside of alcohol treatment services. We used linked health administrative data to estimate all-cause and cause-specific mortality among individuals who had an alcohol-related hospital inpatient or emergency department presentation.

Design: Observational study using data from the Data linkage Alcohol Cohort Study (DACS), a state-wide retrospective cohort of individuals with an alcohol-related hospital inpatient or emergency department presentation.

Surgical reconstruction of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) can be challenging during multi-ligament knee injury surgery due to the limited working space. There is risk of collision between the guide pin, pulling sutures, reamer, tunnel, implant, and graft of the different ligament reconstructions. In this Technical Note, we detail our senior author's technique for superficial MCL reconstruction using suture anchors and cruciate ligament reconstruction with all-inside techniques.

Polo-like kinase I (Plk1) is a highly conserved seronine/threonine kinase essential in meiosis and mitosis for spindle formation and cytokinesis. Here, through temporal application of Plk1 inhibitors, we identify a new role for Plk1 in the establishment of cortical polarity essential for highly asymmetric cell divisions of oocyte meiosis. Application of Plk1 inhibitors in late metaphase I abolishes pPlk1 from spindle poles and prevents the induction of actin polymerization at the cortex through inhibition of local recruitment of Cdc42 and Neuronal Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome protein (N-WASP).

Introduction And Aims: Population level alcohol consumption has declined markedly in Australia in the past two decades, with distinct generational patterns. The underlying reason for this shift remains unclear and there has been little work assessing how attitudes and beliefs about alcohol have shifted in population sub-groups.

Design And Methods: Using seven waves of survey data spanning 19 years (2001-2019, n = 166,093 respondents aged 14 +), we assess age, time-period and birth cohort effects on trends in four measures of alcohol attitudes (disapproval of regular alcohol use, perceptions of safe drinking levels for men and women and perception that alcohol causes the most deaths of any drug in Australia).

Article Synopsis
  • Haglund's deformity, or posterosuperior calcaneal prominence, can cause painful retrocalcaneal bursitis, often requiring surgery if conservative treatments fail.
  • Surgical options include both open and endoscopic methods, focusing on removing the bursa, reducing the calcaneal prominence, and cleaning up the Achilles tendon.
  • A review of 20 relevant studies indicates that both surgical approaches effectively improve patient outcomes, with endoscopic surgery showing benefits like shorter surgery times and fewer complications, but more research is needed for optimization.

Introduction: Alcohol is a leading risk factor for death and disease in young people. We compare age-specific characteristics of young people who experience their first ('index') alcohol-related hospitalisation or emergency department (ED) presentation, and whether age at index predicts 12-month rates of readmission.

Methods: We used a retrospective linked-data cohort of 10,300 people aged 12-20 years with an index alcohol-related hospital and/or ED record in New South Wales, Australia from 2005 to 2013.

Background And Aims: Tolerance to the effects of alcohol is an important element in the diagnosis of alcohol use disorders (AUD); however, there is ongoing debate about its utility in the diagnosis AUD in adolescents and young adults. This study aimed to refine the assessment of tolerance in young adults by testing different definitions of tolerance and their associations with longitudinal AUD outcomes.

Design: Prospective cohort study.

Eggs contain about 200,000 mitochondria that generate adenosine triphosphate and metabolites essential for oocyte development. Mitochondria also integrate metabolism and transcription via metabolites that regulate epigenetic modifiers, but there is no direct evidence linking oocyte mitochondrial function to the maternal epigenome and subsequent embryo development. Here, we have disrupted oocyte mitochondrial function via deletion of the mitochondrial fission factor Drp1.
