Mirroring preeclampsia: the molecular basis of Ballantyne syndrome.

The purpose of this article was to further elucidate the pathophysiology of Mirror (Ballantyne) syndrome within the context of known biomarkers for preeclampsia. This novel insight from clinical practice involved a case of post-twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome-laser hydrops in an ex-donor twin, corroborated by histopathologic placental territory edema and maternal sequelae of Mirror syndrome. We serially measured the levels of activin A, follistatin, endothelin-1 (ET-1), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 (sFlt), and von Willebrand factor (vWF) in the maternal serum from disease evolution through to recovery.

Histone deacetylase inhibitors induce leukemia gene expression in cord blood hematopoietic stem cells expanded ex vivo.

Umbilical cord blood is a valuable source of hematopoietic stem cells. While cytokine stimulation can induce ex vivo hematopoietic cell proliferation, attempts have been made to use epigenetic-modifying agents to facilitate stem cell expansion through the modulation of cellular epigenetic status. However, the potential global effect of these modifying agents on epigenome raises concerns about the functional normality of the expanded cells.

Cytokine combinations on the potential for ex vivo expansion of murine hematopoietic stem cells.

Hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) is a rare cell population, which is capable of self-renewal and differentiation to all blood lineages. The clinical potential of HSCs for treating hematological disorders has led to the use of cytokine stimulation for ex vivo expansion. However, little is known about the molecular features of the HSC populations expanded under different cytokine combinations.

Epigenetic dysregulation of leukaemic HOX code in MLL-rearranged leukaemia mouse model.

HOX genes are frequently dysregulated in human leukaemia with the gene rearrangement between mixed lineage leukaemia (MLL) and partner genes. The resultant MLL fusion proteins are known to mediate leukaemia through disruption of the normal epigenetic regulation at the target gene loci. To elucidate the pathogenic role of MLL fusion proteins in HOX dysregulation in leukaemia, we generated a novel haematopoietic lineage-specific Mll-Een knock-in mouse model using a Cre-mediated inversion strategy.

Kimura disease is a rare inflammatory condition of unknown aetiology. It typically presents in young Asian males with the triad of non-tender subcutaneous swellings in the head and neck region, peripheral eosinophilia and raised serum IgE. About 16% of cases have associated renal disease.

Anaplastic large cell lymphoma of the pancreas: a pediatric case and literature review.

A 13-year-old boy presented with acute abdominal pain and later became jaundiced. Medical imaging subsequently demonstrated a 7 x 8 cm pancreatic mass. Examination of a biopsy specimen obtained by open laparotomy revealed malignant lymphoma.

Throughout the last century, there has been a marked decline in obstetric maternal deaths, resulting in an increase in the proportion of nonobstetric deaths among pregnant women. Trauma, in particular, has become a leading cause of maternal death. We report the case of a 20-year-old primigravid woman who was involved in a motor vehicle crash at 36 weeks gestation.
