The nearly circular (mean eccentricity [Formula: see text]) and coplanar (mean mutual inclination [Formula: see text]) orbits of the solar system planets motivated Kant and Laplace to hypothesize that planets are formed in disks, which has developed into the widely accepted theory of planet formation. The first several hundred extrasolar planets (mostly Jovian) discovered using the radial velocity (RV) technique are commonly on eccentric orbits ([Formula: see text]). This raises a fundamental question: Are the solar system and its formation special? The Kepler mission has found thousands of transiting planets dominated by sub-Neptunes, but most of their orbital eccentricities remain unknown.

In this study, a new approach using H NMR spectroscopy combined with chemometrics method was developed for qualitative and quantitative analyses of extracts of Compound Danshen Dripping Pills (CDDP). For the qualitative analysis, some metabolites presented in Compound Danshen extract (CDE, extraction intermediate of CDDP) were detected, including phenolic acids, saponins, saccharides, organic acids and amino acids, by the proposed H NMR method, and metabolites profiles were further analyzed by selected chemometrics algorithms to define the threshold values for product quality evaluation. Moreover, three main phenolic acids (danshensu, salvianolic acid B, and procatechuic aldehyde) in CDE were determined simultaneously, and method validation in terms of linearity, precision, repeatability, accuracy, and stability of the dissolved target compounds in solution was performed.

The nucleoprotein (NP) of Ebola virus (EBOV) and Marburg virus (MARV) is an essential component of the viral ribonucleoprotein complex and significantly impacts replication and transcription of the viral RNA genome. Although NP is regarded as a promising antiviral druggable target, no chemical ligands have been reported to interact with EBOV NP or MARV NP. We identified two compounds from a traditional Chinese medicine Gancao (licorice root) that can bind both NPs by combining affinity mass spectrometry and metabolomics approaches.

Cardenolides, as a group of natural products that can bind to Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase with an inhibiting activity, are traditionally used to treat congestive heart failure. Recent studies have demonstrated that the strong tumor cytotoxicities of cardenolides are mainly due to inducing the tumor cells apoptosis through different expression and cellular location of Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase α-subunits. The leaves, flesh, seeds and juices of numerous plants from the genera of Nerium, Thevetia, Cerbera, Apocynum and Strophanthus in Apocynaceae family, are the major sources of natural cardenolides.

We report a new approach to constructing a peptide-polysaccharide hybrid hydrogel via the calcium-ion-triggered co-assembly of fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl-diphenylalanine (Fmoc-FF) peptide and alginate. Calcium ions triggered the self-assembly of Fmoc-FF peptide into nanofibers with diameter of about 30 nm. Meanwhile, alginate was rapidly crosslinked by the calcium ions, leading to the formation of stable hybrid hydrogel beads.

Superflares are large explosive events on stellar surfaces one to six orders-of-magnitude larger than the largest flares observed on the Sun throughout the space age. Due to the huge amount of energy released in these superflares, it has been speculated if the underlying mechanism is the same as for solar flares, which are caused by magnetic reconnection in the solar corona. Here, we analyse observations made with the LAMOST telescope of 5,648 solar-like stars, including 48 superflare stars.

Enzyme-responsive supramolecular hydrogels are a new class of smart materials and have enormous potential to be used in biology and medicine. In this study, α-chymotrypsin was proposed to promote the self-assembly of amino acid derivatives for the preparation of such supramolecular hydrogels. It is found that α-chymotrypsin significantly shortens the gelation time from 8 days (or no gelation occurred within 2 weeks) to 10 min-4 h depending on the structure of amino acid derivatives.
