Microsaccades, the tiny gaze relocations that occurr during fixation, have been linked to covert attention deployed degrees away from the center of gaze. However, the link between attention and microsaccades is deeper in that it also unfolds at the foveal scale. Here, we have examined the spatial grain of pre-microsaccadic attention across the 1° foveola.

Article Synopsis
  • Exogenous attention quickly directs focus to important stimuli, but this study explores its dynamics specifically in the central fovea, where visual resolution is highest.
  • Using advanced eye-tracking and controlled displays, researchers found that brief attention to a location improves detail perception, but this effect is limited to very specific areas.
  • Over time, the opposite effect occurs, where acuity increases at ignored locations instead, suggesting that exogenous attention and inhibition of return work together to enhance visual exploration in detailed scenes.
