B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) is the most common form of cancer diagnosed in children. While the majority of patients survive with conventional treatment, chemotherapeutic agents have adverse effects and the potential for relapse persists even after full recovery. Given their pivotal function in anti-cancer immunity, there has been a surge in research exploring the potential of natural killer (NK) cells in immunotherapy, which has emerged as a promising avenue for treating leukemia.

The clinical presentation and epidemiology of infective endocarditis (IE) have evolved over time. While the cornerstones of IE treatment remain antimicrobial therapy and surgery, percutaneous mechanical aspiration (PMA) has emerged as an option for carefully selected patients as a complementary modality, based on retrospective data, case series, and expert experience. In this comprehensive review, we summarize the proceedings from an inaugural summit dedicated to the discussion of PMA in the global management of IE, consisting of experts across multiple disciplines from diverse geographic regions and care environments.

Disorders of the pulmonic valve (PV) receive considerably less attention than other forms of valvular heart disease. Due to the dramatically improved survival of children with congenital heart disease over the last 5 decades, there has been a steady increase in the prevalence of adults with congenital heart disease, which necessitates that clinicians become familiar with the anatomy and the evaluation of right ventricular outflow tract and PV anomalies. A multimodality imaging approach using echocardiography, cardiac computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging is essential for a comprehensive evaluation of the anatomy and function of the right ventricular outflow tract, PV, and supravalvular region.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how indoor allergen exposure during the COVID-19 pandemic affected allergen sensitivity in young children with asthma.
  • Asthmatic children tested after the lockdown showed significantly higher sensitivity to house dust mites and animal dander compared to those tested before the pandemic.
  • Increased indoor time and pet ownership during lockdown were linked to heightened allergen sensitization and a rise in asthma attacks requiring treatment.

As the world still vividly recalls the previous monkeypox (mpox) outbreak that impacted over 120 countries worldwide with more than 99,000 cases in 2022, we are now facing a second wave of infections from the monkeypox virus (MPXV), characterized by an exponential increase in cases. The current 2024 outbreak has already recorded more than 20,000 cases in Africa, marking a dramatic escalation compared to previous outbreaks. The predominance of the newly identified clade Ib variant, first detected in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and now identified across multiple African nations and beyond, underscores its enhanced transmissibility and potential for international spread, evidenced by cases in Sweden and Thailand.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance is a major global public health challenge, particularly with the rise of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) and (CRPA). This study aimed to describe the characteristics of CRE and CRPA infections in Eastern Europe, focusing on Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

Methods: Following MOOSE and PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature review of articles published between 1 November 2017 and 1 November 2023 was conducted using the MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, CDSR, DARE, and CENTRAL databases.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study analyzed data from 1,189 patients to assess how severe MR affects outcomes like mortality and heart complications, finding that those with severe MR faced worse health risks over a five-year period.
  • * Results indicated that severe MR significantly increased the risk of mortality and the need for aortic valve replacement (AVR), but AVR greatly improved survival rates, particularly in patients with severe MR.

Introduction: Airway problems emerging after congenital cardiac surgery operations may have an impact on mortality and morbidity. Recently, to improve alveolar gas exchange and reduce respiratory effort, high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) has started to be used in paediatric cases. This study aimed to evaluate the potential effects of high-flow nasal oxygen therapy on postoperative atelectasis development and reintubation rate in paediatric cardiac surgery patients.

Objective: Right ventricular (RV) overload findings affect the risk classification and treatment approach in acute pulmonary embolism (APE). Recently, it was reported that a new electrocardiography (ECG) parameter, terminal D1S + D3R (T-D1S + D3R) pattern, supported the diagnosis of APE. We aim to search the relationship between T-D1S + D3R pattern and right ventricular dilatation (RVD) in APE.

Article Synopsis
  • A study compared the effectiveness of ceftolozane/tazobactam and ceftazidime/avibactam in non-COVID-19 hospitalized patients with multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia, using data from 2016 to 2022.
  • Of the 197 patients analyzed, those treated with ceftolozane/tazobactam had lower recurrence rates of pneumonia, fewer hospital readmissions, and a higher likelihood of being discharged home compared to those on ceftazidime/avibactam.
  • Additionally, ceftolozane/tazobactam resulted in significantly lower antibiotic costs, suggesting it may be the more favorable

Background: Allergen-specific immunotherapy, a unique inducer of tolerance, may result in T cell exhaution.

Aims: To investigate how the duration of house dust mite (HDM) subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) affects the expression of major immune checkpoint (ICP) molecules on the surface of CD4 T-helper and regulatory T (Treg) cells.

Study Design: Cross-sectional study.

Background: Currently available risk stratification models for acute pulmonary embolism (PE) include hemodynamic status, cardiac biomarkers, right ventricle (RV) dysfunction on imaging, and clinical scores. Focusing on the length-tension relationship of the ventricle might have a superior predictive capability over RV dysfunction in terms of mortality and classification of patients with acute PE. In this study, our hypothesis suggests that the tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE)/systolic pulmonary artery pressure (sPAP) ratio has superior predictive capability for in-hospital mortality in patients with acute PE compared to TAPSE or sPAP as distinct measures.

In recent years, there has been a shift in the epidemiology of patients with infective endocarditis (IE). This has been characterized by an alarming increase in IE in patients who inject drugs, cardiac implantable electronic device-related IE, and those with comorbid conditions and high surgical risk. This unmet need has mandated a reevaluation of complex management strategies in these patients and introduction of unconventional approaches in treatment.

This study aimed to optimize an alternative frozen dessert formulation using the response surface method (RSM). The formulation utilized oat-based milk substitute (OBMS) due to its desirable texture, sensory appeal, and nutritional benefits for vegans and lactose intolerant individuals. Xanthan gum (XG) was also incorporated to enhance the rheological properties of the dessert.

Background: Information about the development of cognitive skills and the effect of sensory integration in children using auditory brainstem implants (ABIs) is still limited.

Objective: This study primarily aims to investigate the relationship between sensory processing skills and attention and memory abilities in children with ABI, and secondarily aims to examine the effects of implant duration on sensory processing and cognitive skills in these children.

Methods: The study included 25 children between the ages of 6 and 10 years (mean age: 14 girls and 11 boys) with inner ear and/or auditory nerve anomalies using auditory brainstem implants.

Background: Antigen-specific memory B cells play a key role in the induction of desensitization and remission to food allergens in oral immunotherapy and in the development of natural tolerance (NT). Here, we characterized milk allergen Bos d 9-specific B cells in oral allergen-specific immunotherapy (OIT) and in children spontaneously outgrowing cow's milk allergy (CMA) due to NT.

Methods: Samples from children with CMA who received oral OIT (before, during, and after), children who naturally outgrew CMA (NT), and healthy individuals were received from Stanford biobank.
