Objective: To assess the effects of infliximab treatment on insulin sensitivity and cardiovascular risk factors in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS).

Methods: In this prospective study, 30 consecutive AS patients (23 men and 7 women) fulfilling the modified 1984 New York criteria for AS were investigated. All patients were treated with intravenous infliximab.

Jejunal diverticulosis is generally asymptomatic and is associated with high morbidity and mortality secondary to complications, especially in elderly patients. We present a case report of a 74-year-old female patient with jejunal diverticulosis and perforation due to diverticulitis.

Long-term outcomes of pars plana vitrectomy without internal limiting membrane peeling for optic disc pit maculopathy.

Purpose: To evaluate the results of surgical treatment of maculopathy secondary to congenital optic pit anomaly with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), endolaser to the temporal edge of the optic disc and C3F8 tamponade without internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling.

Patients And Methods: Thirteen eyes of 12 patients with serous macular detachment and/or macular retinoschisis secondary to congenital optic disc pit (ODP) were included in the study. All eyes underwent PPV, posterior hyaloid removal, endolaser photocoagulation on the temporal margin of the optic disc and 12% C3F8 gas tamponade.

Effect of sodium ascorbate on the bond strength of silorane and methacrylate composites after vital bleaching.

We investigated the effect of sodium ascorbate (SA) on the microtensile bond strengths (MTBSs) of different composites to bovine enamel after vital bleaching with hydrogen peroxide (HP) or carbamide peroxide (CP). Thirty bovine incisors were randomly divided into five groups and treated with no bleaching application (control), 35% HP alone, 35% HP+10% SA for 10 minutes (HP+SA), 16% CP alone, or 16% CP+10% SA for 10 minutes (CP+SA). Specimens were restored with Silorane adhesive and Filtek Silorane composite (designated as S/group) or with Clearfil SE bond and Filtek Supreme XT (designated as F/group).

Objectives: We aimed to compare the effect of remifentanil without muscle relaxant with succinylcholine for intubation in microlaryngoscopy.

Patients And Methods: Eighty patients were randomly divided into two groups: Group R (n=40) and S (n=40) received remifentanil 4 µg/kg intravenously or 1 µg/kg respectively. Anesthesia was induced with 2 mg/kg propofol in both groups.

The hemodynamic effects of dexmedetomidine and esmolol in electroconvulsive therapy: a retrospective comparison.

Effects of preoperative iron deficiency on transfusion requirements in liver transplantation recipients: a prospective observational study.

The aims of this study were to determine the frequency of preoperative iron deficiency in adult living donor liver transplantation patients and to investigate its relationship with the need for intraoperative transfusion. Between September 1, 2011, and June 1, 2012, 103 patients scheduled for liver transplantation were included in this prospective study. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to baseline iron status: an iron-deficient group and a non deficient (normal iron profile) group.

Background: The study aim was to compare the efficacy of dexmedetomidine vs midazolam for sedation during the early postoperative period in adolescents who underwent scoliosis surgery.

Methods: We performed a prospective, randomized trial in an intensive care unit (ICU) in a tertiary care center. In this study, 42 patients (American Society of Anesthesiology physical status I and II) who underwent scoliosis surgery were divided into two groups according to sedation protocols: group dexmedetomidine (DEX) (n = 22) and group midazolam (MDZ) (n = 20).

Background: Although the need for increased postoperative analgesia in smokers has been described, the effect of secondhand smoke on postoperative analgesia requirements has not been studied. We examined the effects of secondhand smoke on fentanyl consumption and postoperative pain.

Methods: In this study, 101 patients (American Society of Anesthesiology physical status I and II) who underwent abdominal hysterectomy were divided into 3 groups according to history of exposure to cigarette smoke as per medical records which was retrospectively confirmed by measurement of serum cotinine: smokers (n = 28), nonsmokers (n = 31), and secondhand smokers (n = 32).

In work presented here, several simple odor mitigation alternatives were investigated for their effectiveness in preventing the release of common odorants, such as terpenes, ammonia, and reduced sulfur compounds. The mitigation methods studied included the use of a blanket of finished compost, compost amendment mixed within the feedstock, odor neutralizing agents (ONAs), and oxygen release compounds (ORCs).

Interleukin-2 gene polymorphism in Turkish patients with Behçet's disease and its association with ocular involvement.

Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic immune-mediated systemic disease, characterized by oral and genital lesions and ocular inflammation. Several cytokine genes may play crucial roles in host susceptibility to BD, because the cytokine production capacity varies among individuals and depends on the cytokine gene polymorphisms. The association of the interleukin (IL)-2 gene polymorphisms with the susceptibility to BD was investigated in this study.

Short term effects of non-surgical periodontal treatment on gingival crevicular fluid levels of tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor 2 (PAI-2) in patients with chronic and aggressive periodontitis.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) levels of tissue type plasminogen activator (t-PA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor 2 (PAI-2) in aggressive periodontitis (AgP), chronic periodontitis (CP) and periodontally healthy control subjects, before (BT) and after (AT) the non-surgical periodontal treatment.

Design: Systemically healthy 12 CP and 13 AgP patients and 20 control subjects were included in this study. Plaque index, gingival index, probing depth and clinical attachment levels were recorded and GCF samples were collected BT and AT.
