Acute lung injury (ALI) and the subsequent acute respiratory distress syndrome remain devastating diseases with high mortality rates and poor prognoses among patients in intensive care units. The present study is aimed at investigating the role and underlying mechanisms of microRNA-31-5p () on lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) induced ALI. Mice were pretreated with agomir, antagomir, and their negative controls at indicated doses for 3 consecutive days, and then they received a single intratracheal injection of LPS (5 mg/kg) for 12 h to induce ALI.

Loss of chondroitin sulfate (CS) has been reported to play a key role during intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). However, the detailed mechanism of CS and its synthases have not been elucidated. Since CS is mainly synthesized by chondroitin synthases 3 (Chsy3), here, the Chsy3 knockout mice are generated by using CRISPR-Cas9 and semi-cloning technology to study its mechanism during IDD.

Although cervical spinal deformity (CSD) can have a profoundly negative impact on an individual's quality of life and there have been many advances in surgical treatment of CSD in recent years, there exists no comprehensive classification system of surgical treatment that categorizes anterior and posterior surgery separately according to the grade of surgery. The objective of this study is to introduce the new classification system of various surgical treatments for CSD. We developed a new classification system (SOF system) for CSD surgery that describes the sequence of surgical approach (S), the grade of osteotomy (O), and the information of fixation (F) using alphanumeric codes.

As a consequence of military operations, many veterans suffer from penetrating wounds and long-term retention of military-grade heavy metal fragments. Fragments vary in size and location, and complete surgical removal may not be feasible or beneficial in all cases. Increasing evidence suggests retention of heavy metal fragments may have serious biological implications, including increased risks for malignant transformation.

Background: Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is the most serious type of cervical spondylosis, which is often treated surgically in patients with progressive neurological symptoms following ineffective conservative treatment. However, some patients have residual symptoms such as neck pain, stiffness, and C5 nerve palsy after surgery. The Qishe pill can effectively relieve the symptoms of neck pain and numbness, but there is no evidence showing the efficacy and safety of the Qishe pill in treating symptoms after spinal cord surgery.

Background: Intervertebral disc degeneration is related to tissue fibrosis. ADAMTS can degrade the important components of the ECM during the process of intervertebral disc degeneration, ultimately resulting in the loss of intervertebral disc function. sIL-13R2-Fc can inhibit fibrosis and slow down the degeneration process, but the mechanism involved remains unclear.

Background: Using longitudinal ultrasounds as an improved fetal growth marker, we aimed to investigate if fetal growth deceleration followed by rapid postnatal weight gain is associated with childhood cardiometabolic risk biomarkers in a contemporary well-nourished population.

Methods: We defined fetal growth deceleration (FGD) as ultrasound-measured 2nd-3rd-trimester abdominal circumference decrease by ≥0.67 standard deviation score (SDS) and rapid postnatal weight gain (RPWG) as 0-2-year-old weight increase by ≥0.

Extraction of DNA, RNA and protein from the same sample would allow for direct comparison of genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic information. Commercially available kits exhibit poor protein yield and the TRIzol reagent produces a protein pellet that is extremely difficult to solubilize. In response to these limitations, this study presents an optimized method for the extraction of protein from the organic phase of TRIzol that allows for higher yield recovery of skeletal muscle protein compared with direct homogenization in a common protein lysis buffer.

Background Heterozygous mutation in BMP (bone morphogenetic protein) receptor 2 is rare, but BMP cascade suppression is common in congenital heart disease-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension (CHD-PAH); however, the underling mechanism of BMP cascade suppression independent of BMP receptor 2 mutation is unknown. Methods and Results Pulmonary hypertensive status observed in CHD-PAH was surgically reproduced in rats. Gremlin-1 expression was increased, but BMP cascade was suppressed, in lungs from CHD-PAH patients and shunted rats, whereas shunt correction retarded these trends in rats.

Exosomes are attracting considerable interest in the cardiovascular field as the wide range of their functions is recognized in acute myocardial infarction (AMI). However, the regulatory role of exosomal long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in AMI remains largely unclear. Exosomes were isolated from the plasma of AMI patients and controls, and the sequencing profiles and twice qRT-PCR validations of exosomal lncRNAs were performed.

We investigated whether adding anthropometric measures to HbA1c would have stronger discriminative ability over HbA1c alone in detecting dysglycemia (diabetes and prediabetes) among Asian women trying to conceive. Among 971 Singaporean women, multiple regression models and area under receiver-operating characteristic (AUROC) curves were used to analyze associations of anthropometric (weight, height, waist/hip circumferences, 4-site skinfold thicknesses) and HbA1c z-scores with dysglycemia (fasting glucose ≥6.1 mmol/L with 2-hour glucose ≥7.
