Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) has been acknowledged as a potential contributor to cognitive dysfunction and brain injury, causing progressive demyelination of white matter, oligodendrocytes apoptosis and microglia activation. Nervonic acid (NA), a naturally occurring fatty acid with various pharmacological effects, has been found to alleviate neurodegeneration. Nonetheless, evidence is still lacking on whether NA can protect against neurological dysfunction resulting from CCH.

Here, we reviewed current knowledge indicating the potential involvement of autophagy dysregulation in mania and further discussed whether targeting autophagy could be a promising strategy for mania therapy.
Discussions: Accumulating evidence indicated the involvement of autophagy in the pathology of mania.
In the present work, the antimicrobial peptide (AMP) of GL13K was successfully coated onto a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) substrate to investigate its antibacterial activities against () bacteria. To improve the coating efficiency, 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide (EDC) was mixed with a GL13K solution and coated on the PEEK surface for comparison. Both energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data confirmed 30% greater peptide coating on PEEK/GL13K-EDC than PEEK without EDC treatment.

This study was designed to test the hypothesis that regenerative therapy to restore urethral striated muscle (stM) and pelvic floor muscles might represent a valuable therapeutic approach. For the experiment, single-guide RNAs targeting myostatin () were used for CRISPRi/dCas9-Kruppel associated box (KRAB)-mediated gene silencing.

Noninvasive mechano-biological intervention, such as microenergy acoustic pulse (MAP), low-intensity pulsed ultrasound, and low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave treatment, is an optimal approach to stimulate nerve regeneration.
Aim: To establish a new model in vitro to simulate nerve injury in neurogenic ED and to explore the mechanisms of MAP in vitro.
A series of graphene oxide (GO) suspensions with different particle sizes (<100 nm, ~100 nm, ~1 µm and >1 µm) were successfully fabricated after 0, 30, 60 and 120 min of sonication, respectively. The antibacterial properties of GO suspensions showed that >1 µm GO size resulted in a loss of nearly 50% of bacterial viability, which was higher than treatment by ~100 nm GO size (25%) towards (). Complete entrapment of bacteria by the larger GO was observed in transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

There are few effective therapeutic approaches for male SUI due to both insufficient study of the structure of the external urethral sphincter (EUS) and incomplete understanding of the resident EUS stem/progenitor cells. The goals of this study were to localize and to determine the distribution of tissue-resident stem/progenitor cells in the male EUS throughout EUS development and to understand the anatomic temporal patterns of the EUS.

Stem cell antigen-1 (Sca-1) has been identified as a stem cell marker within many organs but never within the penis.
Aim: To localize and isolate penile stem/progenitor cells (PSPCs) and to evaluate cellular differentiation after exposure to induction medium and microenergy acoustic pulse (MAP) therapy.
Background: Severe negative emotional reactions to chronic illness are maladaptive to patients and they need to be addressed in a primary care setting.
Objective: The psychometric properties of a quick screening tool-the Negative Emotions due to Chronic Illness Screening Test (NECIS)-for general emotional problems among patients with chronic illness being treated in a primary care setting was investigated.
Method: Three studies including 375 of patients with chronic illness were used to assess and analyze internal consistency, test-retest reliability, criterion-related validity, a cut-off point for distinguishing maladaptive emotions and clinical application validity of NECIS.
Background/purpose: House dust mite (HDM) is well known as one of the major indoor allergens that trigger allergic inflammation, especially asthma, and accounts for 85% of all cases. So far, asthma has been thought of as a condition of imbalance between T helper (Th)1 and Th2. Fungal immunomodulatory protein-Flammulina velutipes (FIP-fve) has been seemingly demonstrated to modulate the response to Th1 cytokine production.

This work represents the first evaluation of the effects of water extract of C. nuda (WE-CN), an edible mushroom, on murine bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs) and the potential pathway through which the effects are mediated. Our experimental results show that WE-CN could induce phenotypic maturation of DCs, as shown by the increased expression of MHC and costimulatory molecules.

Moreover, a post-remote NH3 plasma treatment was proposed to replace the complicated silanization procedure for enzyme immobilization. Compared to conventional methods using chemical procedures, remote NH3 plasma treatment reduces the processing steps and time.

In addition, we also examined the effects of pre-emptive treatment with a number of drugs on astrocyte activation and hypersensitivity development in this model. Using immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting, little glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP; an astrocyte marker) immunoreactivity was detected in the CN of the normal rats.

The cytoplasmic redistribution of hnRNP A1 is a regulated process during viral infection and cellular stress. Here we demonstrate that hnRNP A1 not only is an internal ribosome entry site (IRES) trans-acting factor that binds specifically to the 5' untranslated region (UTR) of enterovirus 71 (EV71) and regulates IRES-dependent translation but also binds to the 5' UTR of Sindbis virus (SV) and facilitates its translation.

For the miniaturization of ISFET sensing systems, the concept of a REFET with low ion sensitivity is proposed to replace the conventional reference electrodes through the arrangement of a quasi reference electrode and a differential readout circuit. In this study, an ion-unblocking membrane was used as the top layer of a REFET. To optimize the REFET performance, the influences of the silylating process, different plasticizers, and the composition of the PVC cocktails were investigated.

We showed earlier the presence of superparamagnetic magnetite in iron granules formed in honeybees, and subscribed to the notion that external magnetic fields may cause expansion or contraction of the superparamagnetic particles in an orientation-specific manner, relaying the signal via cytoskeleton (Hsu and Li 1994). In this study, we established a size-density purification procedure, with which quantitative amount of iron granules was obtained from honey bee trophocytes and characterized; the density of iron granules was determined to be 1.

The results showed that TR2 mRNA was confined to spermatocytes; TR4 and TR3 mRNAs were expressed in both spermatocytes and spermatids. The heat treatment did not change TR2 mRNA level but significantly reduced TR4 mRNA expression in spermatocytes on days 3 and 8 after the heat treatment.

Objective: To understand the mechanism of testis regression in aging male.
Methods: Human testis tissues were obtained during related operation with informed consent (normal young male 3 cases and aged male 3 cases). Total RNA was isolated by QIAGEN RNAeasy kit.
Background & Aims: Molecular misreading of the ubiquitin B gene has been documented in the cerebral cortex of patients with Alzheimer's disease and Down syndrome. This novel process consists of the unfaithful conversion of genomic information into aberrant transcripts and its subsequent translation into +1 proteins.
Methods: Because Mallory bodies (MBs) also contain ubiquitinated proteins, we stained 11 autopsied and 6 biopsied MB-containing livers from patients with steatohepatitis with an antibody to ubiquitin(+1) to look for the presence of mutant (ubiquitin(+1)) protein.
