Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by progressive alveolar bone resorption, and excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a key factor to disease progression. Therefore, scavenging ROS to alleviate inflammation and promote bone regeneration are promising strategies to treat periodontitis. In this study, L-arginine (L-Arg) was used to modify mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG), forming L-Arg modified MBG (MBG@L-Arg), which showed effective ROS-scavenging and NO release properties in cells, and realize the protection and restoration of cell's activity in ROS-rich microenvironment.

Aims: The challenges in identifying functional variants from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and unraveling regulatory mechanisms in schizophrenia research persist, particularly in intronic regions. A non-coding regulatory variant, rs1399178, associated with schizophrenia risk, is identified and its impact on NRF1 binding is investigated.

Methods: This study focuses on schizophrenia GWAS risk loci, using functional genomics, expression analyses and structural analysis to identify 736 schizophrenia risk single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that disrupt transcription factor (TF) binding.

Context: Bi-containing free-cutting steel has consistently attracted attention in the field of materials processing. The molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to investigate the impact of bismuth (Bi) nanoparticles on the internal structural evolution and mechanical properties of single-crystal Fe during the rolling process. The influence of varying rolling depths in the presence of nanoparticles is also examined.

Chiral gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) have been investigated widely and have shown great potential in biomedical applications, such as biosensing, combating bacterial infections and tissue regeneration. However, some stabilizers and reducing agents for the synthesis of chiral Au NPs can produce toxicity in living organisms. Therefore, it is interesting to design green methods to prepare chiral gold nanoparticles that are nontoxic, environment-friendly, and low-cost.

In a previous study we found that the levels of the novel microRNAs (miRNAs) bta-novel-miR-117 bta-novel-miR-234 and bta-novel-miR-417 (P < 0.001) are significantly up-regulated in extracellular vesicles (EVs) in the culture medium of degenerating embryos compared to blastocysts. Because the functions of these novel miRNAs are still unknown, we investigated their regulatory roles during bovine blastocyst development by adding their mimics and inhibitors to the culture medium.

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the clinical nursing pathway model in the care of patients with mild acute pancreatitis (MAP). We conducted a retrospective analysis of medical records for 80 patients diagnosed with MAP at our hospital between September 2021 and March 2023. The patients were randomly assigned to 2 groups: the control group, which received routine nursing care, and the observation group, which followed the clinical nursing pathway.

To have the desired therapeutic effect, nanomedicines and macromolecular medications must move from the site of injection to the site of action, without having adverse effects. Transvascular transport is a critical step of this navigation, as exemplified by the Enhanced Permeability and Retention (EPR) effect in solid tumors, not found in normal organs. Numerous studies have concluded that passive, diffusion- and convection-based transport predominates over active, cellular mechanisms in this effect.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) contain microRNAs (miRNAs), which are important regulators of embryonic development. Nevertheless, little is known about the precise molecular processes controlling blastocyst development and quality. In a previous study, we identified bta-miR-665 as one of the miRNAs more abundantly present in extracellular vesicles of embryo-conditioned culture media of blastocysts compared to degenerate ones.

This study aimed to elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which PLD2 controls apoptosis and edema in pancreatic cells via the Nrf2/NF-κB pathway. AR42J rat pancreatic cells were treated with 10 nM mitomycin to create an in vitro pancreatitis model (model group), with a control group receiving phosphate-buffered saline. Cells were transfected with a PLD2 overexpression plasmid using Lipofectamine 3000, forming the PLD2 overexpression group.

Introduction: Disulfidptosis is a recently identified form of non-apoptotic programmed cell death which distinguishes itself from classical cell death pathways. However, the prognostic implications of disulfidptosis-related long non-coding RNAs (DRLs) and their underlying mechanisms in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain largely unexplored.

Methods: In this study, we leveraged RNA-sequencing data and clinical information of HCC patients from the TCGA database.

Article Synopsis
  • Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are produced by neutrophils in response to certain inflammatory signals but their role in oral lichen planus (OLP) is not well understood.
  • This study examines the presence of NETs in tissue samples from OLP patients and correlates their levels with inflammatory cytokines IL-17 and TNF-α.
  • Results show increased NET-related proteins in OLP lesions, particularly in the erosive stage, and highlight a positive correlation between NET formation and elevated levels of IL-17 and TNF-α.

  • A study in Eastern China aimed to determine how many couples with at least one child under three years old would like to have more children and whether a planned monthly cash subsidy would influence their fertility intentions.
  • Before hearing about a monthly ¥1000 cash subsidy, only 15.1% of the respondents expressed interest in having more children, but that number increased by 8.5% after learning about the subsidy.
  • Conducted in early 2022, the survey included 144,893 eligible respondents and examined factors such as sociodemographic traits, household expenses, and reasons behind the reluctance or willingness to increase family size.

In recent years, prostate cancer (PCa) has seen an increasing prevalence, particularly among middle-aged and older men, positioning it as a significant health concern. Current PCa screening predominantly utilizes prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, digital rectal examination (DRE), and the Gleason scoring system. However, these diagnostic methods can sometimes be imprecise.

Bacterial infections is one of the main factors delaying the wound healing, which has become a serious challenge for healthcare systems. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), which show broad-spectrum and excellent antibacterial activity, tend to aggregate easily and therefore hardly penetrate into bacterial biofilms, showing limited anti-biofilm properties. Herein, alginate (ALG) modified ZnO NPs (ZnO@ALG) were prepared via the combination of mussel-inspired method and "thiol-Michael" click reaction, which showed excellent dispersion and biocompatibility.

Background: Within the follicular fluid, extracellular vesicles (EVs) guide oocyte growth through their cargo microRNAs (miRNAs). Here, we investigated the role of EVs and their cargo miRNAs by linking the miRNAs found in EVs, derived from the fluid of an individual follicle, to the ability of its oocyte to become a blastocyst (competent) or not (non-competent).

Methods: Bovine antral follicles were dissected, categorized as small (2-4 mm) or large (5-8 mm) and the corresponding oocytes were subjected to individual maturation, fertilization and embryo culture to the blastocyst stage.
