Wing polyphenism is a phenomenon in which one genotype can produce two or more distinct wing phenotypes adapted to the particular environment. What remains unknown is how wing pad development is controlled downstream of endocrine signals such as insulin and JNK pathways. We show that genes important in cellular proliferation, cytokinesis, and cell cycle progression are necessary for growth and development of long wings.

Metallic selenides have been widely investigated as promising electrode materials for metal-ion batteries based on their relatively high theoretical capacity. However, rapid capacity decay and structural collapse resulting from the larger-sized Na /K greatly hamper their application. Herein, a bimetallic selenide (MoSe /CoSe ) encapsulated in nitrogen, sulfur-codoped hollow carbon nanospheres interconnected reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (rGO@MCSe) are successfully designed as advanced anode materials for Na/K-ion batteries.

Neuroinflammation is a critical mechanism responsible for the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recent studies reveal that Hippo/Yes-associated protein (YAP) signaling pathway is highly associated with a series of inflammation-related disorders. Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), with its neurotrophic and anti-apoptotic functions for nervous system, has been demonstrated to decrease the expression of proinflammatory mediators.

We have demonstrated that with e-beam deposition of a thin AlO layer before atomic layer deposition, a uniform AlO film can be obtained on WSe/sapphire samples. Device performances are observed for WSe top-gate transistors by using oxide stacks as the gate dielectric. By using thermal evaporation, epitaxially grown multilayer antimonene can be prepared on both MoS and WSe surfaces.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections has been designed to optimize CD4 T-cell survival and limit HIV replication. Cell types other than CD4 T cells such as monocytes/macrophage, dendritic cells, and granulocytes (collectively known as myeloid cells), are generally not considered in the development of ART protocols. Myeloid dendritic cells (mDCs) are the most potent inducers of CD4 T-cell activation and central to the regulation of immune responses.

Image segmentation has been increasingly used to identify the particle size distribution of crushed ore; however, the adhesion of ore particles and dark areas in the images of blast heaps and conveyor belts usually results in lower segmentation accuracy. To overcome this issue, an image segmentation method UR based on deep learning U-Net and Res_Unet networks is proposed in this study. Gray-scale, median filter and adaptive histogram equalization techniques are used to preprocess the original ore images captured from an open pit mine to reduce noise and extract the target region.

Berberine (BBR) is routinely prescribed in many Asian countries to treat diarrhea. Evidence from both animal and clinical investigations suggests that BBR exerts diverse pharmacological activities, including antidiabetic, antineoplastic, antihypertensive, and antiatherosclerotic effects. This study aimed to explore the cardioprotective mechanisms of BBR and to elucidate the modulations between autophagy and mitochondrial function during hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) in H9c2 cells.

Parkinson disease autosomal recessive, early onset 7 (PARK7 or DJ-1) is involved in multiple physiological processes and exerts anti-apoptotic effects on multiple cell types. Increased intestinal epithelial cell (IEC) apoptosis and excessive activation of the p53 signaling pathway is a hallmark of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). However, whether DJ-1 plays a role in colitis is unclear.

Uniparental embryos have uniparental genomes and are very useful models for studying the specific gene expression of parents or for exploring the biological significance of genomic imprinting in mammals. However, the early developmental efficiency of androgenetic embryos is significantly lower than that of parthenogenetic embryos. In addition, oocytes are able to reprogram sperm nuclei after fertilization to guarantee embryonic development by maternally derived reprogramming factors, which accumulate during oogenesis.

Epidemiological studies have suggested a link between vitamin D deficiency and increased risk for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD); however, the underlying mechanisms have remained unclear. Here, using both clinical samples and experimental rodent models along with several biochemical approaches, we explored the specific effects and mechanisms of vitamin D deficiency in NAFLD pathology. Serum vitamin D levels were significantly lower in individuals with NAFLD and in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice than in healthy controls and chow-fed mice, respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease with no cure, and the study aimed to explore potential therapies by analyzing gene sets and human colon tissue samples.
  • The research highlighted MS-275, a histone deacetylase inhibitor, as a promising treatment since it enhances histone H3 acetylation, reduces inflammation and cell death, and improves the intestinal barrier in mouse models of colitis.
  • Findings revealed that MS-275's effectiveness relies on the vitamin D receptor (VDR); without VDR, the treatment's benefits were diminished, suggesting a critical role for both histone acetylation and VDR in managing UC.

Defect engineering is widely applied in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) to achieve electrical, optical, magnetic, and catalytic regulation. Vacancies, regarded as a type of extremely delicate defect, are acknowledged to be effective and flexible in general catalytic modulation. However, the influence of vacancy states in addition to concentration on catalysis still remains vague.

As a serine protease, thrombin is a pivotal component in coagulation cascade and has been frequently screened as an informative biomarker for the diagnosis of coagulation disorder-related diseases. Herein, a "signal-on" electrochemical biosensor is described for the highly sensitive and selective detection of thrombin activity, by exploiting a thrombin-specific substrate peptide (Tb peptide) as the recognition element and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization for signal amplification. Specifically, the carboxyl-group-free Tb peptides are self-assembled onto gold electrode surface via the N-terminal cysteine residue and are used for the specific recognition of thrombin molecules.

Cardiomyocyte apoptosis induced by hypoxia and ischemia plays important roles in heart dysfunction after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). However, the mechanism of apoptosis induction remains unclear. A previous study reported that Y-box protein 1 (YB1) is upregulated after myocardial hypoxia/reoxygenation or ischemia/reperfusion (H/R or I/R, respectively) injury; however, whether YB1 is associated with H/R-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis is completely unknown.

This study investigates a path following problem of underactuated autonomous underwater vehicle under multiple uncertainties in three-dimensional space. The uncertainties are partly induced by hydrodynamic coefficient uncertainty, ocean currents and unmodeled hydrodynamics, namely dynamic uncertainties. In addition, velocities are assumed to be measured with bounded noise, which is called velocity measurement uncertainties.

The concept of nanoparticle transport through gaps between endothelial cells (inter-endothelial gaps) in the tumour blood vessel is a central paradigm in cancer nanomedicine. The size of these gaps was found to be up to 2,000 nm. This justified the development of nanoparticles to treat solid tumours as their size is small enough to extravasate and access the tumour microenvironment.
