Purpose: Anterior chamber air injection (ACAI) is a surgical technique used to decrease the occurrence of postoperative intraocular lens (IOL) haptic dislocation following phacovitrectomy with gas/air tamponade. The impact of this technique on IOL stability remains uncertain, prompting the design of this study to investigate further.

Methods: This study included 51 eyes of 51 patients who underwent phacovitrectomy with gas/air tamponade.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro activity of omadacycline (OMC) and OMC-based combination therapy against carbapenem-resistant (CRKP).

Methods: The broth microdilution assay assessed the in vitro susceptibility of CRKP to OMC. The checkerboard assay was performed to evaluate the activity of OMC combined with polymyxin B (PB), amikacin (AN), or meropenem (MEM) against KPC-producing (class A) CRKP strains, and OMC combined with PB, aztreonam (ATM), MEM, or AN against class B and class A plus class B CRKP strains.

Background: Recognition of carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bacteria (CR-GNB) carriage is frequently delayed, which increases the risk of subsequent infection and transmission. Previously, we developed a scoring system to identify CR-GNB carriage upon intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Although the ICU-CARB score showed satisfactory performance, it has not been externally validated.

  • A new automatic optimization system for synchrotron radiation beamlines at the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility enhances efficiency but lacks the ability to store adjusting experiences for future improvements.
  • By integrating an expert system with an automatic evolutionary algorithm, the system optimizes initialization using a database, accelerates convergence to near-optimal solutions, and learns by saving past results.
  • The software, built on the EPICS platform and utilizing Python and MongoDB, was successfully tested on a specific beamline, achieving a 15-fold speed increase and demonstrating potential for broader applications in beamline technology.

The "gut-brain axis" is involved in many physiological processes. However, its role in regulating mammary gland (MG) development remains unknown. In this study, we established the mice model of bilateral subdiaphragmatic vagotomy (Vago) to clarify the effects of "gut-brain axis" on MG development in pubertal mice.

Objective: Examine the cost-effectiveness of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) versus surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) for Chinese patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS) at intermediate and high surgical risk.

Design: A two-phase model, comprising a 1-month decision tree to simulate perioperative outcomes and a 5-year Markov model with monthly cycles to simulate long-term outcomes, has been developed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of TAVI compared with SAVR for Chinese patients with AS at intermediate and high risk. The event rates for both phases are sourced from the Placement of Aortic Transcatheter Valves IA and IIA trials, while the cost inputs and utility values are sourced from local sources or published literature.

Diabetic ulcers (DUs) are persistent and challenging complications of diabetes. The consequences of DUs include a decline in functional status, increased risk of infection, hospitalization, and even death. Our study revealed a significant decrease in the levels of cortistatin (CST) in the skin tissue of patients with DUs and diabetic rats.

Article Synopsis
  • - NaV(PO) (NVP) is a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries, but its poor conductivity limits its performance, prompting research for improvements.
  • - The study introduces a simple method to create N/S dual-atom doped carbon coatings that enhance Na mobility and increase conductivity by altering electron distribution and expanding interlayer spacing.
  • - The modified NVP@NSC composite achieves a high specific capacity of 90.3 mAh/g at 20 C with 94.4% capacity retention after 8000 cycles, indicating excellent stability and performance for practical battery applications.

  • - This study aims to develop and evaluate a digital psychological intervention to improve mental health in Chinese patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a common but often overlooked issue.
  • - It will be conducted as a randomized controlled trial involving at least 420 COPD patients, comparing usual care against usual care plus the new intervention, with assessments over 16 weeks.
  • - The findings could provide significant insights into the cost-effectiveness and impact of the intervention on mental wellbeing, potentially leading to broader mental healthcare access for COPD patients in China.

Article Synopsis
  • Previous studies indicate that fermented barley is digested more slowly, but the role of nonstarch components like protein, lipid, and β-glucan in this process needs clarification.
  • Removing these nonstarch components, particularly protein, significantly enhances the breakdown of starch during digestion, with protein showing the most substantial impact.
  • The study reveals that protein forms a physical barrier around starch, maintaining its structure and preventing swelling, which ultimately hinders starch hydrolysis.

The incidence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) is on the rise, and with limited pharmacological therapy available, identification of new metabolic targets is urgently needed. Oxalate is a terminal metabolite produced from glyoxylate by hepatic lactate dehydrogenase (LDHA). The liver-specific alanine-glyoxylate aminotransferase (AGXT) detoxifies glyoxylate, preventing oxalate accumulation.

Radiation-induced tissue injury (RITI) is the most common complication in clinical tumor radiotherapy. Due to the heterogeneity in the response of different tissues to radiation (IR), radiotherapy will cause different types and degrees of RITI, which greatly limits the clinical application of radiotherapy. Efforts are continuously ongoing to elucidate the molecular mechanism of RITI and develop corresponding prevention and treatment drugs for RITI.

Background: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a major target for the treatment of colorectal cancer. Thus, anti-EGFR antibody conjugated lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles can offer a potential means of enhancing the efficacy of chemotherapeutics in EGFR overexpressing cancers. In addition, the combination of chemotherapy and photothermal therapy is a promising strategy for cancer treatment.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have gained attention as a promising therapeutic approach in both preclinical and clinical osteoarthritis (OA) settings. Various joint cell types, such as chondrocytes, synovial fibroblasts, osteoblasts, and tenocytes, can produce and release extracellular vesicles (EVs), which subsequently influence the biological activities of recipient cells. Recently, extracellular vesicles derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSC-EVs) have shown the potential to modulate various physiological and pathological processes through the modulation of cellular differentiation, immune responses, and tissue repair.

Supramolecular polymers are typical self-assemblies, in which repeating monomer units are bonded together with dynamic and reversible noncovalent interactions. Supramolecular polymers can combine the advantages of polymer science and supramolecular chemistry. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) means that a molecule remains faintly emissive in the dispersed state but intensively luminescent in a highly aggregated state.

Hyperactive osteoclasts and hypoactive osteoblasts usually result in osteolytic conditions such as estrogen-deficiency bone loss. Few natural compounds that both attenuating bone resorption and enhancing bone formation could exert effects on this imbalance. 5-Deoxycajanin (5-D), an isoflavonoid extracted from Cajan leaf with estrogen-like properties, were found to have beneficial pharmacological effects on rebalancing the activities of osteoclasts and osteoblasts.
