The physical interactions of growing bacterial cells with each other and with their surroundings significantly affect the structure and dynamics of biofilms. Here a 3D agent-based model is formulated to describe the establishment of simple bacterial colonies expanding by the physical force of their growth. With a single set of parameters, the model captures key dynamical features of colony growth by non-motile, non EPS-producing cells on hard agar.

The nuclear pore membrane protein 121 (POM121) was originally thought to be a constitutive protein of the nuclear pore complex (NPC). In addition to being involved in NPC assembly, abnormal POM121 expression has been found to be associated with many diseases. In this study, we explored, in detail, the effect of POM121 on the macrophage inflammatory response and found that its expression was significantly lower in LPS-stimulated macrophages, substantially amplifying pro-inflammatory cytokine (TNF-α and IL-6) production, suggesting that POM121 exerts a potent inhibitory effect on macrophage inflammation.

Apoptosis inhibition is a critical strategy of mycobacteria facilitating its survival in macrophages, but the underlying mechanism is not completely understood. In this study, we found that Rv3033, a secreted virulence factor of mycobacteria, played an important role in bacillary survival within macrophages. Forced over-expressed of Rv3033 in macrophages could efficiently resist mycobacteria-induced early and late apoptosis, accompanied with the obvious increased cellular bacterial burden.

Graphitic carbon nanocages (GCNCs) have unique geometric structures and physical properties, which have been extensively investigated for various applications. However, no reports focusing on using GCNCs and polymer-coated GCNCs for solid tumor ablation induced by near-infrared laser irradiation under enhanced initial body temperature, or on the biosafety of GCNCs in vivo, have been published. Here, we developed chitosan (CS)-coated GCNCs and showed that both GCNCs and GCNCs/CS in mouse tumors can rapidly convert an 808 nm laser light energy into heat, which efficiently kill nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells and inhibit tumor growth.

The degradation phenomena of thin-film solid state batteries caused by cycling at a high cut-off voltage and different temperatures were studied using an improved potentiometric measurement of entropy change combined with electrochemical impedance analysis and incremental capacity analysis. Entropy profiling is demonstrated as a viable non-destructive technique for solid state batteries that is sensitive to structural changes in electrodes during galvanostatic cycling, and is complementary to other techniques for studying degradation. The characteristic peaks and valleys in the entropy profile as a function of the state-of-charge could be closely correlated to theories of phase transitions in the cathode material.

We successfully used a haploidentical transplantation protocol with posttransplant cyclophosphamide (CY) (50 mg/kg/d on days +3 and +4) for in vivo T-cell depletion in patients with mucopolysaccharidosis using reduced-intensive conditioning regimens, followed by a busulfan-based conditioning regimen, which included busulfan (12 to 16 mg/kg) and fludarabine(150 to 200 mg/m)+rabbit antihuman thymocyte globulin (7.5 to 10 mg/kg) as a conditioning regimen. Melatonin and its metabolites have been demonstrated to modulate the glucose, dyslipidemia and other metabolic disorders. This study aimed to explore a novel mechanism responsible for diabetic cardiomyopathy development, and also validated whether melatonin played a protective role in repairing damaged heart in the diabetes setting. Our data demonstrated that spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk) was activated by chronic high-glucose stimulus and contributed to the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy.

In recent years, multifunctional nanoparticles have attracted much research interest in various biomedical applications such as biosensors, diagnosis, and drug delivery systems. In this study, we report an NIR imaging diagnosis and therapy nanoplatform which is developed by complexing upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP@OA) NaLuF4:Er3+,Yb3+ with nanographene oxide (NGO). The obtained nanocomposites UCNP@NGO showed excellent stability and low cell toxicity, which not only acted as upconversion luminescence (UCL) probes for tumor imaging, but also served as therapy agents by converting laser energy into thermal energy for photothermal therapy (PTT) with high photothermal conversion efficiency.

Background: Viral myocarditis is a widespread cardiac disease associated with inflammation and myocardial injury and is predominantly caused by coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) infection in humans as well as in mice. CVB3-induced myocarditis shows sexually dimorphic sensitivity and is more prevalent in male mice. Our previous studies showed that natural killer (NK) cells played an indispensable role in CVB3-induced myocarditis, and female mice exhibited less pathological cardiac interferon gamma (IFN-γ) NK cell infiltration than did male mice.
