Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to explore changes in memory T cells and related factors in mice with a focus on a BALB/c model sensitized by Echinococcus granulosus infection.
  • - Researchers created three groups: a control group without sensitization, a nonsensitized group infected with the parasite, and a sensitized group also infected. They measured memory T cell percentages and IL-23 levels using various techniques.
  • - Results showed that the sensitized group had more memory T cells than the control group but fewer than the infected group, with IL-23 levels lower in the sensitized group compared to the infected group, indicating a link between IL-23, memory T cell activation, and allergic reactions from the parasite.

Aldolases are enzymes that reversibly catalyze the cleavage of carbon-carbon bonds. Here we describe a recombinant sialic acid aldolase originating from the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata (sNPL), and compare its substrate spectrum with a sialic acid aldolase originating from chicken (chNPL). In contrast to vertebrate animals which can synthesize, degrade, and incorporate sialic acids on glycoconjugate ubiquitously, snails (as all mollusks) cannot synthesize sialic acids endogenously, and therefore the biological function and substrate scope of sNPL ought to differ significantly from vertebrate sialic aldolases such as chNPL.

Decreased concentration of phospholipids were observed in brain tissue from individuals with dementia compared with controls, indicating phospholipids might be a key variable in development of age-related cognitive impairment. The reflection of these phospholipid changes in blood might provide both reference for diagnosis/monitoring and potential targets for intervention through peripheral circulation. Using a full-scale targeted phospholipidomic approach, 229 molecular species of plasma phospholipid were identified and quantified among 626 senile residents; the association of plasma phospholipids with MoCA score was also comprehensively discussed.

Singlet oxygen (O) formed through photosensitization may initiate oxidative destruction of biomembranes, however, the influence from the spatial organization of photosensitizers (PS) relative to membranes remains unclear. To clarify this issue, we loaded riboflavin 5'-(dihydrogen phosphate) monosodium (FMN-Na) as a hydrophilic PS into the lumen of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), and attached the nanoassemblies (FMN-Na@HNTs), via Pickering effects, to the outer surfaces of giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) of phospholipids. We also prepared GUVs dopped with lumiflavin (LF) as a lipophilic PS having a O quantum yield comparable to FMN-Na.
