Whey protein phospholipid concentrate (WPPC) is a co-product generated during the manufacture of whey protein isolate. WPPC is depleted of simple sugars but contains numerous glycoconjugates embedded in the milk fat globule membrane, suggesting this fraction may serve as a carbon source for growth of bifidobacteria commonly enriched in breast fed infants. In this work, we demonstrate that WPPC can serve as a sole carbon source for the growth of Bifidobacterium bifidum, a species common to the breastfed infant and routinely used as a probiotic.

Hopfield neural networks (HNNs) promise broad applications in areas such as combinatorial optimization, memory storage, and pattern recognition. Among various implementations, optical HNNs are particularly interesting because they can take advantage of fast optical matrix-vector multiplications. Yet their studies so far have mostly been on the theoretical side, and the effects of optical imperfections and robustness against memory errors remain to be quantified.

  • Milk oligosaccharides are complex carbs that support gut health, immune system development, and disease protection by promoting beneficial bacteria.
  • A study analyzed oligosaccharide profiles from Holstein, Ayrshire, and endangered Northern Finncattle breeds, revealing differences in composition and abundance among them.
  • Ayrshire had the highest fucosylated oligosaccharides, while Northern Finncattle's unique sialylated content is valuable, making Ayrshire a promising option for enhancing gut health diversity in consumers.

  • Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are undigestible carbohydrates in human milk that support infant health and may be influenced by maternal obesity through the gut microbiota.
  • This study analyzed 90 milk samples from mothers with varying body mass indices (BMIs) to explore the relationship between maternal obesity and HMO profiles, finding no significant connections.
  • The results suggest that maternal weight prior to pregnancy does not affect HMO abundance, underlining the importance of sharing findings even when statistical correlations are absent.

We study multiplexed quantum frequency conversion (m-QFC) on a single waveguide, where a single pump beam simultaneously converts multiple signal beams at distinct wavelengths. Using a three-peak periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide, we demonstrate the multiplexed upconversion in the telecom band with internal efficiencies up to 73.6.

Spatial-mode projective measurements could achieve super-resolution in remote sensing and imaging, yet their performance is usually sensitive to the parameters of the target scenes. We propose and demonstrate a robust classifier of close-by light sources using optimized mode projection via nonlinear optics. Contrary to linear-optics based methods using the first few Hermite-Gaussian (HG) modes for the projection, here the projection modes are optimally tailored by shaping the pump wave to drive the nonlinear-optical process.

The objective of this study was to identify bioactive oligosaccharides and peptides in the cooking water of chickpeas and common beans, known as aquafaba. The oligosaccharides stachyose, raffinose and verbascose were quantified by high-performance anion-exchange chromatography; 78 and 67 additional oligosaccharides were identified in chickpea and common bean aquafaba, respectively, by LC-MS/MS. Chickpea aquafaba uniquely harbored ciceritol and other methyl-inositol-containing oligosaccharides.

Significance: Tissues' biomechanical properties, such as elasticity, are related to tissue health. Optical coherence elastography produces images of tissues based on their elasticity, but its performance is constrained by the laser power used, working distance, and excitation methods.

Aim: We develop a new method to reconstruct the elasticity contrast image over a long working distance, with only low-intensity illumination, and by non-contact acoustic wave excitation.

We demonstrate an invertible all-optical gate on chip, with the roles of control and signal switchable by slightly adjusting their relative arrival time at the gate. It is based on the quantum Zeno blockade (QZB) driven by sum-frequency generation (SFG) in a periodically poled lithium niobate microring resonator. For two nearly identical nanosecond pulses, the later arriving pulse is modulated by the earlier arriving one, resulting in 2.

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are a diverse class of carbohydrates which support the health and development of infants. The vast health benefits of HMOs have made them a commercial target for microbial production; however, producing the approximately 200 structurally diverse HMOs at scale has proved difficult. Here we produce a diversity of HMOs by leveraging the robust carbohydrate anabolism of plants.

We demonstrate a single-photon counting Raman spectroscope and benchmark it against conventional and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. For direct comparison without ambiguity, we use the same solutions of Rhodamine 6G and a common optical setup with either a spectrometer or an acousto-optic tunable filter, whereas the surface enhancement is realized with immobilized Ag nanoparticles. Our results find that the single photon counting significantly elevates the detection sensitivity by up to eight orders of magnitude, arriving at a comparable level of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

Constipation is a common gastrointestinal condition, which may occur at any age and affects countless people. The search for new treatments for constipation is ongoing as current drug treatments fail to provide fully satisfactory results. In recent years, probiotics have attracted much attention because of their demonstrated therapeutic efficacy and fewer side effects than pharmaceutical products.

Broadband frequency comb generation through cascaded quadratic nonlinearity remains experimentally untapped in free-space cavities with bulk χ materials mainly due to the high threshold power and restricted ability of dispersion engineering. Thin-film lithium niobate (LN) is a good platform for nonlinear optics due to the tight mode confinement in a nano-dimensional waveguide, the ease of dispersion engineering, large quadratic nonlinearities, and flexible phase matching via periodic poling. Here we demonstrate broadband frequency comb generation through dispersion engineering in a thin-film LN microresonator.

Mass spectrometry has become the technique of choice for the assessment of a high variety of molecules in complex food matrices. It is best suited for monitoring the evolution of digestive processes in vivo and in vitro. However, considering the variety of equipment available in different laboratories and the diversity of sample preparation methods, instrumental settings for data acquisition, statistical evaluations, and interpretations of results, it is difficult to predict a priori the ideal parameters for optimal results.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal disease associated with abnormal changes in the vaginal microbiome. Our previous study found that Lactobacillus rhamnosus has a good therapeutic effect on bacterial vaginosis by inhibiting the most prominent bacterium associated with BV, Gardnerella vaginalis. In this study, we show that acetic acid and lactic acid are the main substances in the cell-free supernatant (CFS) of L.

Its gene cluster consists of 23 putative genes, including nine nonstructural genes and fourteen structural genes. In this work, three nonstructural genes, mpsA, mpsH and mpsR, were found to encode transcriptional regulators to control maltocin P28 synthesis.

Reverse-phase solid-phase extraction (SPE) is regularly used for separating and purifying food-derived oligosaccharides and peptides prior to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis. However, the diversity in physicochemical properties of peptides may prevent the complete separation of the two types of analytes. Peptides present in the oligosaccharide fraction not only interfere with glycomics analysis but also escape peptidomics analysis.
