Pitch-based hard carbon (HC) materials at low cost and high carbon yield represent a promising anode for sodium-ion batteries. However, their limited capacity poses a significant challenge to their practical use. Here, we report a universal strategy to boost sodium storage of pitch-based HC materials via catalytic oxidation with magnesium oxide to produce a high-oxygen pitch.

Adaptability to return to work is a process by which cancer survivors(CSs) utilize accessible resources to reconstruct themselves. While the stigma, financial situation and social support are known to influence their adaptability to return to work, the mechanisms by which these factors work remain unclear. This study proposes a moderated mediation model to signify a pathway linking stigma to the adaptability to return to work.

Rechargeable sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have emerged as an advanced electrochemical energy storage technology with potential to alleviate the dependence on lithium resources. Similar to Li-ion batteries, the cathode materials play a decisive role in the cost and energy output of SIBs. Among various cathode materials, Na layered transition-metal (TM) oxides have become an appealing choice owing to their facile synthesis, high Na storage capacity/voltage that are suitable for use in high-energy SIBs, and high adaptivity to the large-scale manufacture of Li layered oxide analogues.

Purpose: Employers play an important role in the return-to-work (RTW) of cancer survivors (CSs), and recently a substantial number of qualitative studies from the employers' perspective have emerged. This meta-synthesis aims to systematically review these qualitative studies regarding employers' experiences with CSs' RTW.

Methods: Five electronic databases were searched from inception to January 2024 to identify the studies.

Article Synopsis
  • The research on cancer patients returning to work in China is early-stage, highlighting the need for a specialized tool, the Adaptability to Return-to-Work Scale (ARTWS), to measure this group's adaptability.
  • The ARTWS was developed through expert feedback and testing, resulting in a 24-item scale that identifies key factors influencing work adaptability: "Focusing on rehabilitation," "Rebuilding Self-efficiency," and "Adjusting plans," which account for 66.6% of variance.
  • The scale demonstrated strong reliability and validity, making it a valuable resource for assessing cancer patients' readiness to return to work.

  • Advance care planning helps individuals communicate their future medical care preferences, and decision aids can simplify the complex decision-making process.
  • A scoping review was conducted to evaluate the characteristics, content, and effectiveness of decision aids in this context, analyzing 20 relevant studies from various databases.
  • The review found that websites and videos are the most common types of decision aids, which significantly improved knowledge and decision satisfaction among users, though their overall feasibility is still uncertain.

The formation of a solid electrolyte interphase on carbon anodes causes irreversible loss of Na ions, significantly compromising the energy density of Na-ion full cells. Sodium compensation additives can effectively address the irreversible sodium loss but suffer from high decomposition voltage induced by low electrochemical activity. Herein, we propose a universal electrocatalytic sodium compensation strategy by introducing a carbon nanotube (CNT)/MnO catalyst to realize full utilization of sodium compensation additives at a much-reduced decomposition voltage.

O3-type layered transition metal cathodes are promising energy storage materials due to their sufficient sodium reservoir. However, sluggish sodium ions kinetics and large voltage hysteresis, which are generally associated with Na diffusion properties and electrochemical phase transition reversibility, drastically minimize energy density, reduce energy efficiency, and hinder further commercialization of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Here, this work proposes a high-entropy tailoring strategy through manipulating the electronic local environment within transition metal slabs to circumvent these issues.

The high-capacity advantage of lithium metal anode was compromised by common use of copper as the collector. Furthermore, lithium pulverization associated with "dead" Li accumulation and electrode cracking deteriorates the long-term cyclability of lithium metal batteries, especially under realistic test conditions. Here, we report an ultralight, integrated anode of polyimide-Ag/Li with dual anti-pulverization functionality.

O3-type layered oxide cathodes (NaTMO) for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted significant attention as one of the most promising potential candidates for practical energy storage applications. The poor Na diffusion kinetics is, however, one of the major obstacles to advancing large-scale practical application. Herein, we report bismuth-doped O3-NaNiMnO (NMB) microspheres consisting of unique primary nanoplatelets with the radially oriented {010} active lattice facets.

Anode-free rechargeable sodium batteries represent one of the ultimate choices for the 'beyond-lithium' electrochemical storage technology with high energy. Operated based on the sole use of active Na ions from the cathode, the anode-free battery is usually reported with quite a limited cycle life due to unstable electrolyte chemistry that hinders efficient Na plating/stripping at the anode and high-voltage operation of the layered oxide cathode. A rational design of the electrolyte toward improving its compatibility with the electrodes is key to realize the battery.

Body roundness index (BRI) was associated with cardiovascular diseases. But the relationship between BRI with cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and all-cause mortality remains largely unknown in hypertensive patients. This prospective cohort study included patients with hypertension who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2001 through 2018, and aimed to evaluate the association between BRI with CVD mortality and all-cause mortality.

  • Delirium is a serious brain condition often seen in the elderly, which can increase the risk of developing dementia later on, but its exact causes are not well understood.
  • Researchers compared three mouse models of delirium created by surgical anesthesia, inflammation, and neurotransmitter modulation, discovering that certain substances affected brain activity similarly to what is seen in delirium patients.
  • The study found that injecting mice with scopolamine caused temporary cognitive issues and increased activity without damaging cholinergic neurons, but it did disrupt hippocampal synapse functions, helping to shed light on how delirium might start.
