In order to assess the repellent, contact, and fumigant properties of three essential oils (EOs) from Rhododendron species in China against adults of Tribolium castaneum, Lasioderma serricorne, Sitophilus oryzae, this study analyzed their chemical components. The three EOs were extracted by hydrodistillation from leaves of Rhododendron species, including R. davidsonianum, R.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored the insecticidal properties of essential oils (EOs) and extracts from two plant species, focusing on their effects against specific insect pests.
  • The EOs were extracted using hydro-distillation, and their chemical compositions were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), revealing myristicin as the primary component with notable insect repelling and toxic effects.
  • The research identified four compounds with strong antifeedant activity from the ethanol extract, suggesting that these natural plant resources could be beneficial in developing integrated pest management strategies.

The extract from Cinnamomum cassia Presl bark was obtained with supercritical CO fluid extraction (SFE). Chemical components of the SFE extract were characterized by GC-MS spectrometry. The repellency and contact toxicity of the SFE extract were evaluated against the adults of Tribolium castaneum and Lasioderma serricorne along with those of its two main compounds.
