Article Synopsis
  • Zero-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic bismuth halides, specifically two mixed-cation-phase bismuth chlorides, are being explored as lead-free materials due to their unique properties.
  • These compounds exhibit interesting photoluminescence effects, with one showing dual emissions (blue fluorescence and yellow-green phosphorescence) and the other displaying a wide-band yellow-green emission.
  • Additionally, their structures allow for significant electron transfer and temperature-dependent proton conduction, which can be enhanced by light, indicating potential applications in smart materials.

Globally, Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common cancer in the male population worldwide, but clinically significant prostate cancer (CSPCa) is more aggressive and causes to more deaths. The authors aimed to construct the risk category based on Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System score version 2.1 (PI-RADS v2.

Article Synopsis
  • Age-related degeneration of lung tissue increases the risk of severe lung diseases, making the search for anti-aging treatments crucial.
  • A study on elderly macaque models found that administration of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) significantly improved lung health by reducing fibrosis and inflammation.
  • BMMSC treatment was effective in decreasing harmful oxidative stress and enhancing the function and proliferation of lung cells, suggesting it could be a viable method to combat age-related lung degeneration.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explored the link between bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and aging by establishing an aging macaque model, analyzing how BMSCs from young and aged macaques differ in their characteristics.
  • - Researchers found that aging BMSCs showed decreased levels of key genes associated with aging, such as TERT, SIRT1, and SIRT6, using techniques like RT-PCR and Western blot.
  • - The team compared the effects of young and aged BMSCs on 293T cells, investigated secreted cytokines, and analyzed transcriptomes of peripheral blood mononuclear cells from macaques to understand gene transcription and regulatory mechanisms related to aging.

A molecularly imprinted quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor for ractopamine (RAC) detection was developed by electrodepositing a poly-o-aminothiophenol membrane on an Au electrode surface modified by self-assembled Au nanoparticles (AuNPs). The modified electrodes were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. This molecularly imprinted QCM sensor showed good frequency response in RAC binding measurements and the introduction of AuNPs demonstrated performance improvements.

Aim: The aim of this analysis was to know whether these three cytokine polymorphisms, including interleukin-6 (IL-6; -572 G/C), tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α; -308 G/A), and IL-10 (-592 A/C) have an effect on baseline peritoneal transport property and longitudinal evolution of peritoneal function.

Methods: A total of 141 stable peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients with mean treatment duration of 84.4 ± 34.

Biomass pyrolysis in presence of abundant CaO additives is a fundamental process prior to CaO sorption enhanced gasification in biomass-based zero emission system. In the present study, thermogravimetric Fourier transform infrared (TG-FTIR) analysis was adopted to examine the effects of CaO additives on the mass loss process and volatiles evolution of wheat-straw pyrolysis. Observations from TG and FTIR analyses simultaneously demonstrated a two-stage process for CaO catalyzed wheat-straw pyrolysis, different from the single stage process for pure wheat-straw pyrolysis.

Background: Chronic metabolic acidosis is a common metabolic disturbance and its clinical impact can be severe and extensive. The role and the change of the intrarenal renin-angiotensin system (RAS) during metabolic acidosis are uncertain, and whether acidosis can evoke inflammation remains unclear.

Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed with water containing 0.

Chronic inflammation is a well-recognized complication in dialysis patients and a potential role of the adipose tissue as an important tissue of origin contributing to inflammation has been proposed. Stable peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients were enrolled to investigate the relationship between serum levels of proinflammatory cytokines and adipokines. Our results revealed that there was a strong association between high sensitivity C-reactive protein and interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) but not with IL-10 and IL-18.

Background: Accumulating evidence supports the important role of protein-bound uremic toxins such as indoxyl sulfate and p-cresol in uremic syndrome. They exert direct deleterious effects on a variety of cells and could link to clinical outcome. Factors relevant to indoxyl sulfate and p-cresol levels in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients have rarely been investigated.

Residual kidney function (RKF) contributes significantly to solute clearance and fluid removal for dialysis patients, and the presence of RKF is associated with less morbidity and better long-term outcome. Most studies demonstrate that peritoneal dialysis preserves RKF better than hemodialysis (HD). Herein, we report a 55-year-old man with end stage renal failure who had been on chronic HD for 12 years.

Emphysematous pyelonephritis (EPN) is a severe and complicated renal infection characterized by gas formation within the infected kidney and its surrounding tissues. Early diagnosis with a high index of suspicion and aggressive treatment are important for improving outcome. Bilateral involvement is rare, and surgical intervention is usually required because of its high mortality rate.
