Objective: Several studies have documented a relationship between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and structural heart disease, particularly diastolic function. This meta-analysis will be the first to examine the echocardiographic-derived cardiac function and structural characteristics in NAFLD patients, and its association with liver disease severity and metabolic profile.

Methods: Medline and Embase were searched and pairwise meta-analysis was conducted in DerSimonian and Laird to obtain the odds ratio (OR) and mean difference (MD) for dichotomous and continuous variables, respectively, to compare the effects of NAFLD on the echocardiography parameters.

Cordyceps militaris has been widely studied for its various pharmacological activities such as antitumor, anti-inflammation, and immune regulation. The binding of an allergen to IgE-sensitized mast cells in nasal mucosa triggers allergic rhinitis. We found that oral administration of 300 mg/kg of the ethanol extract prepared from silkworm pupa-cultivated Cordyceps militaris fruiting bodies significantly alleviated the symptoms of ovalbumin-induced allergic rhinitis in mice, including sneeze/scratch, mast cell activation, eosinophil infiltration, and Syk activation.

Fifty-five compounds were isolated from the fresh stems of , including 14 benzenoids, 11 triterpenes, nine steroids, five tocopherols, five chlorophylls, four flavonoids, two benzoquinones, two tannins, and three other compounds. Their structures were constructed by 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectral data, and were also identified by a comparison of their spectral data with those reported in the literature. Among these isolates, 1,2-bis-(5--tocopheryl) ethane () was reported for the first time from natural sources.

Cordyceps militaris has been widely used as an herbal drug and tonic food in East Asia and has also been recently studied in the West because of its various pharmacological activities such as antitumoral, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. In this study, we examined the molecular mechanism underlying the anti-allergic activity of ethanol extract prepared from silkworm pupa-cultivated Cordyceps militaris fruit bodies in activated mast cells. Our results showed that ethanol extract treatment significantly inhibited the release of [Formula: see text]-hexosaminidase (a degranulation marker) and mRNA levels of tumor necrosis factor-[Formula: see text] as well as interleukin-4 in RBL-2H3 cells.

Twenty-one chalcones were prepared via aldol condensation and subsequent reduction of these compound led to the corresponding dihydrochalcone and 1,3-diphenylpropane derivatives. The synthetic products were examined for their effects on NO inhibition in LPS-activated mouse peritoneal macrophages. Among the tested compounds, a 1,3-diarylpropane analog, 2-(3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)propyl)-5-methoxyphenol (3p), displayed the most significant inhibitory effects against NO production.

Five new acyclic amides, clausenalansamides C-G (1-5), clausenaline G (6) and (±)-5-(4-methylphenyl)-γ-valerolactone (7) reported from the natural source for the first time, were characterized from the leaves of Clausena lansium. Their structures were established by spectroscopic and spectrometric methods, and the absolute configurations of new compounds 1-5 were determined by electronic circular dichroism and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Eighteen compounds were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activity and only imperatorin (11) and wampetin (12) displayed significant inhibition of fMLP/CB-induced superoxide anion generation with IC values of 1.

Five new iridoids, salvialosides A-E (compounds 1-5), together with fifty known compounds were isolated from the roots of Salvia digitaloides. The structures of the new compounds were completely elucidated using a combination of 2D NMR techniques (COSY, NOESY, HMQC and HMBC) and HR-ESI-MS analyses. The known compounds were identified by comparison of their spectroscopic and physical data with those reported in the literature.

Two new glucosides, salviadigitoside A (1) and salviatalin A-19-O-β-glucoside (2), belonging to the salviatalin type diterpenoids, and a new cyclopenta[c]pyridine, salviadiginine A (3), were isolated from the roots of Salvia digitaloids. Structures of these compounds were determined on the basis of spectroscopic analysis. In addition, compounds 1-3 were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activity, but the results showed a weak anti-inflammatory activity.

The present study was aimed at discovering novel biologically active compounds based on the skeletons of gingerol and shogaol, the pungent principles from the rhizomes of Zingiber officinale. Therefore, eight groups of analogues were synthesized and examined for their inhibitory activities of platelet aggregation induced by arachidonic acid, collagen, platelet activating factor, and thrombin. Among the tested compounds, [6]-paradol (5b) exhibited the most significant anti-platelet aggregation activity.
