In this work, for the first time, microwave distillation (MD) coupled with simultaneous headspace single-drop microextraction (HS-SDME) was developed for the determination of the volatile components in the Chinese herb, Artemisia capillaris Thunb. The volatile components were rapidly isolated by MD, and simultaneously extracted and concentrated by using a dodecane microdrop. The volatile oil extracted in the microdrop solvent was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

Terpolymers of methyl alpha-chloroacrylate (MCA), methacrylic acid (MAA), and methacrylic anhydride (MAH) were synthesized by initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) of MCA and MAA followed by low-temperature annealing that partially converts MAA into MAH. The MAA composition in the iCVD copolymer can be systematically varied between 37 and 85 mol % by adjusting the gas feed fractions of monomers. Study of the monomer reactivity ratios and the copolymer molecular weights supports the hypothesis of a surface propagation mechanism during the iCVD copolymerization.

Based on array CIEF (ACIEF) and a novel whole column imaging detection (WCID), a comprehensive 2-D system with laser-induced fluorescence was developed for protein mapping. By coupling capillary RPLC (CRPLC) as the first dimension and ACIEF as the second dimension, a high-throughput and high-resolution proteomic expression profiling was obtained. An array of up to 60 capillaries was assembled, with electrical connections made through filling small breaks, created on each capillary at positions of buffer reservoirs, with a porous polymer.

We have demonstrated the successful deposition of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) thin films using hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) with tert-butyl peroxide as the initiator. The introduction of the initiator allows for film deposition at low filament temperatures (<200 degrees C) and greatly improves the film deposition rates. The retention of the pendant epoxide chemical functionality and the linear polymeric structure in the deposited films were confirmed by infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Objective: To evaluate effect of ischemic pretreatment on expression of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and injury of spinal cord in canine.

Methods: Fourty-one canine were divided into three groups: the sham-operative group, the pretreatment group and the control group. In the pretreatment group aorta was obstructed for 6 min, and then was opened for 6 min, this procedure was repeated twice, finally aorta was obstructed for 35 min.

A comprehensive two-dimensional (2-D) separation system, coupling capillary reverse-phase liquid chromatography (cRPLC) to capillary isoelectric focusing (CIEF), is described for protein and peptide mapping. cRPLC, the first dimension, provided high-resolution separations for salt-free proteins. CIEF, the second dimension with an orthogonal mechanism to cRPLC afforded excellent resolution capability for proteins with efficient protein enrichment.

A simple and fast protein assay that involves the binding of water-soluble sulfonate heptamethylene cyanine to protein is described. The binding of the dye to protein causes a shift in the absorption maximum of the dye from 778 to 904 nm, and the increase in absorption at 904 nm is monitored. This assay is very reproducible, of good color stability for at least 80 min, and sensitive at the 100 ng/mL level of human serum albumin (HSA) when a spectrophotometer with near-infrared wavelength is used to measure absorbance.
