Epidemiological studies have shown that patients who recovered from acute kidney injury (AKI) may subsequently develop chronic kidney disease (CKD). AKI is primarily caused by renal hypoxia, and it causes epigenetic alterations, known as hypoxic memory. 3-Deazaneplanocin A (Dznep), an inhibitor of histone modification, suppresses renal fibrosis and the expression of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-2 (TIMP2), a profibrotic factor, in mouse ischemia-reperfusion models.

The microbiota plays important roles in the health and diseases of its host. Gharaie et al. demonstrated that antibiotic treatment, especially amoxicillin, facilitated the repair process from ischemic acute kidney injury despite postinjury administration through microbiota modulation.

Epigenetic modifications such as DNA methylation, histone modifications, and chromatin structures in the kidney contribute towards the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). In this study, the role of chromatin remodeling factor inositol requiring 80 (INO80) was investigated. Although INO80 regulates transcription by altering the chromatin structure at the nucleosome level, its role in the kidney remains unknown.

Chronic hypoxia in the renal tubular interstitium has been reported to contribute to the progression of chronic kidney disease. Recently, long-noncoding RNAs have been shown to be involved in various pathological conditions, including hypoxia, one of which is the MIR210 host gene (MIR210HG). To elucidate the function of MIR210HG in renal hypoxia, we exposed primary cultured renal proximal tubular epithelial cells to hypoxia and examined the temporal profile of MIR210HG expression and the role of MIR210HG interaction with hypoxia-inducible factor1α (HIF1α, encoded by HIF1A).

Introduction: Sodium-dependent glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) is a glucose transporter expressed on the proximal tubular cells, where it reabsorbs glucose from the glomerular filtrate. SGLT2 inhibitors (SGLT2is), initially developed as an antidiabetic drug, have recently attracted considerable attention because they have cardiorenal protective effects. Among SGLT2is, dapagliflozin was the first to demonstrate the renoprotective effect in patients with and without diabetes and has been approved for chronic kidney disease (CKD) treatment.

TRPM2 is a Ca2-permeable cationic channel and serves as an oxidative stress sensor.TRPM2 deletion was harmful in renal ischemia-reperfusion injury, whereas TRPM2 deletion mitigated kidney fibrosis. Our findings suggest the role of TRPM2 in kidney diseases is context dependent.

Several studies have reported on the effectiveness of various disinfection methods for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 and their applicability to the disinfection of N95 respirators and surgical masks. To date, there have been no reports on the decontamination of deep in the intermediate layers of the multilayered structure. In this study, the conditions required for decontamination of such layers were simulated by considering the thickness and shape of N95 respirators or surgical masks (samples).

Introduction: Anemia is one of the major complications of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) have been the mainstay of renal anemia treatment. However, there are several safety drawbacks, and a safer and more effective alternative treatment has been sought.

Purpose Of Review: Hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors (HIF-PHIs) are orally active small molecules and are launched as novel therapeutic agents for anemia in chronic kidney disease (CKD). In contrast to conventional exogenous erythropoietin (EPO) administration, HIF-PHIs stimulate endogenous EPO production and improve iron metabolism via stabilization of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF). This review summarizes the mechanism of action, the results of clinical trials, and future perspectives of HIF-PHIs.

Background: Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is widely used for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The purpose of this study was to investigate incidence and risk factors of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) after TACE in patients with HCC.

Methods: In this single-center retrospective study, we examined 461 consecutive TACE sessions in 260 patients between January 2003 and October 2015.

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)/arachidonic acid (AA) ratio showed inverse associations with cardiovascular disease (CVD) in general population. However, this has not been examined enough in dialysis patients. We cross-sectionally investigated the relationship between EPA/AA ratio and prevalence of CVD in 321 chronic hemodialysis patients (64 ± 11 years old; 110 women; dialysis vintage 10 ± 8 years) in an urban area of Tokyo.

Proteinase 3 anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (PR3-ANCA) is reported to be highly specific to vasculitis compared to myeloperoxidase (MPO)-ANCA. We report a case of a 19-year-old woman with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) with high PR3-ANCA positivity. The patient responded well to intravenous immunoglobulin plus oral steroid, and showed no signs of systemic vasculitis during the subsequent 10 months of follow-up.

To realize a DP-QPSK receiver PLC, we heterogeneously integrated eight high-speed PDs on a silica-based PLC platform with a PBS, 90-degree optical hybrids and a VOA. The use of a 2.5%-Δ waveguide reduced the receiver PLC size to 11 mm x 11 mm.

The surface of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) was modified by a coupling agent of 2-(3,4-epoxycyclohexyl)ethyltrimethoxysilane to render them highly compatible with organic monomer mixtures avoiding aggregation. Such TiO2 NPs were then chemically attached with a prepolymer. The refractive index of hybrid TiO2 NPs-polymer was increased dramatically in comparison with that of pure polymer, and it can be controlled by adjusting the content of TiO2 NPs.
