Biomolecule-engineered metal-organic frameworks (Bio-MOFs) are designed by incorporating biomolecules into or onto MOFs through covalent and non-covalent interactions. These composite frameworks exhibit unique catalytic and biological activities, making them highly suitable for various biocatalytic applications. In this review, we highlight recent advances in the material design, bioengineering methods, structural and functional regulation techniques, and biocatalytic applications of Bio-MOFs.

The flexible design and unique physical and chemical properties of self-assembled peptides have shown great potential for applications in the fields of materials science, life science, and environmental science. Peptide nanofibers (PNFs), as a kind of bioactive nanomaterials, possess excellent biocompatibility, flexible designability, and multifaceted functionalizability. In this work, we design and describe PNFs that self-assembled by peptide molecules as carriers for bimetallic nanosheets (BMNS), leading to the development of hybrid nanomaterials, BMNS-PNFs, with unique properties.

Amphiphilic peptides have garnered significant attention due to their highly designable and self-assembling behaviors. Self-assembled peptides hold excellent potential in various fields such as biosensing, environmental monitoring, and drug delivery, owing to their remarkable biological, physical, and chemical properties. While nanomaterials formed by peptide self-assembly have found widespread use in biomedical applications, the development of 2D peptide nanosheets based on the self-assembly of amphiphilic peptides remains challenging in terms of rational design and morphology modulation.

Polymer hydrogels find extensive application in biomedicine, serving specific purposes such as drug delivery, biosensing, bioimaging, cancer therapy, tissue engineering, and others. In response to the growing threat of bacterial infections and the escalating resistance to conventional antibiotics, this research introduces a novel injectable, self-healing antimicrobial hydrogel comprising bioactive aldolized hyaluronic acid (AHA) and quaternized chitosan (QCS). This designed QCS/AHA hydrogel incorporates self-assembling peptide nanofibers (PNFs) and small-sized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for tailored functionality.

Fluorescent bioimaging and photothermal therapy (PTT) techniques have potential significance in cancer diagnosis and treatment and have been widely applied in biomedical and practical clinical trials. This study proposes the molecular design and biofabrication of a two-dimensional (2D) nanoplatform, exhibiting promising prospects for synergistic bioimaging and PTT of tumors. First, biocompatible 2D peptide nanosheets (PNSs) were designed and prepared through peptide self-assembly.

Biomimetic synthesis provides potential guidance for the synthesis of bio-nanomaterials by mimicking the structure, properties and functions of natural materials. Behavioral studies of biological surfaces with specific micro/nano structures are performed to explore the interactions of various molecules or organisms with biological surfaces. These explorations provide valuable inspiration for the development of biomimetic surfaces with similar effects.
