While functional endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is the most useful diagnostic test for the evaluation of dysphagia, it cannot evaluate the esophageal phase of swallowing. To evaluate if a modification for the FEES exam by swallowing an empty capsule and screening of the upper esophagus could be used for early detection of esophageal dysphagia. A prospective, single-center, pilot study.

Objectives: To characterize a subgroup of patients that were diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo of the posterior semicircular canal pBPPV, with findings of geotropic-torsional nystagmus on the roll rest (RT) that intensified on the Dix-Hallpike exam (DH).

Methods: The study population consisted of patients with the diagnosis of pBPPV. First, the roll test (RT) and then the DH test were performed.

We conducted a retrospective chart review to characterize the outcomes of 12 patients-9 men and 3 women, aged 21 to 79 years (mean: 49)-who had been treated at our tertiary care center for acute bacterial meningitis caused by acute otitis media (ABMAO). Fever was the most common presenting sign/symptom, observed in 8 patients, followed by otalgia, neck stiffness, headache, and confusion. An opaque and bulging tympanic membrane was observed in 8 patients.

Objectives: To examine whether shaking the head during the DH exam (HSDH) may improve diagnosis of posterior semicircular canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (pBPPV) in patients with a negative Dix-Hallpike (DH) examination.

Study Design: A prospective cohort clinical study on consecutive patients with dizziness, who were seen by 2 experienced neurotologists. Patients underwent a complete neurotology examination, including positioning testing with roll test and DH.

Changes in finger tissue blood volume (TBV) measured by light transmission and in laser Doppler flow (LDF) were obtained during long breathing (of 12 s period) and associated with the respiratory phases, inspiration and expiration. For fifteen out of sixteen subjects TBV and LDF started to decrease 0-2 s after the start of expiration and increased during inspiration but the start of increase occurred before the start of inspiration, showing that the respiratory-induced changes in TBV and LDF are mainly associated with the expiration. Decrease of TBV and LDF after expiration was also found during the inspiratory gasps

Background: Data on the outcome of tympanic membrane (TM) closure after tympanocentesis in acute otitis media (AOM) patients is limited.

Objectives: To analyze the dynamics of TM perforation closure after 1 or 2 tympanocentesis procedures performed at diagnosis and during AOM treatment.

Patients And Methods: Study population included 113 children enrolled in 4 double-tympanocentesis studies.

Background: Eosinophilic angiocentric fibrosis (EAF) is an uncommon inflammatory fibrosing lesion involving the upper respiratory mucosa, occurring mainly in young to middle aged women (female/male ratio = 2:1). The etiology is unknown; however, severalfactors might play a role in the development of EAF. Among them are prior nasal trauma (in most of the reported cases nasal surgery had been performed afew years prior to diagnosis) and inflammatory or autoimmune etiology (suggested by the ratio and the fact that in many of the reported cases a history of nonspecific allergy was found).

Rhinomanometry is a method for measuring nasal resistance for the purpose of providing an objective evaluation of nasal patency. Posterior rhinomanometry is accomplished without the use of a mask, thus allowing the patient to breathe naturally. Here, we report on the improvements we have made to the existing posterior rhinomanometry system.
