Wastewater and environmental surveillance has been promoted as a communicable disease surveillance tool because it overcomes inherent biases in laboratory-based communicable disease surveillance. Yet, little empirical evidence exists to support this notion, and it remains largely an intuitive, though highly plausible hypothesis. Our interdisciplinary study uses WES data to show evidence for underreporting of SARS-CoV-2 in the context of measurable and statistically significant associations between economic conditions and SARS-CoV-2 incidence and testing rates.

Current validated lichen planus (LP) scoring systems are complicated and optimized for generalized, multi-site disease. There is a need for a validated, simple lesional assessment in LP. Herein, we repurpose and optimize the modified Composite Assessment of Index Lesion Severity (mCAILS) for LP and to validate the optimized lichen planus CAILS (lpCAILS).

Background: The quality of life (QoL) among health professional students is available in the literature, yet there is a paucity of information concerning QoL among African students. The study aimed to measure the QoL with the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) tool among African medical and health science students.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 349 African medical and health science students from various disciplines at the International African University in May 2024.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most common cancers in humans and kills as many people annually as melanoma. The understanding of the transcriptional changes with respect to high-risk clinical/histopathologic features and outcome is poor. In this study, we examine stage-matched, outcome-differentiated cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma using whole-exome and transcriptome sequencing.

Background: Following the latest war in 2023, over nine million people have been internally displaced, of which White Nile State received over 50,000. They lived in different camps and moved to big cities. This study assessed the scope of mental and physical concerns among the IDPs to identify important healthcare needs.

Background: Adverse Outcomes (death or ICU stays longer than 48h) in children with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) or hyperglycemic-hyperosmolar syndrome (HHS) can be predicted by a composite risk score based on severity of hyperglycemia and acidosis, and presence of type 2 diabetes. Because most high-risk patients nevertheless do not experience an Adverse Outcome, we tried to identify differences in management or other clinical characteristics that influenced outcomes.

Methods: In a previously defined group of 4565 admissions for DKA-HHS in 2010-2023, 109 had Adverse Outcomes.

Integrating digital pathology and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms can potentially improve diagnostic practice and precision medicine. Developing reliable, generalizable, and comparable AI algorithms depends on access to meticulously annotated data. However, achieving this requires robust collaboration among pathologists, computer scientists, and other researchers to ensure data quality and consistency.

This research introduces novel concepts in sequence theory, including Bessel convergence, Bessel boundedness, Bessel statistical convergence, and Bessel statistical Cauchy sequences. These concepts establish new inclusion relations and related results within mathematical analysis. Additionally, we extend the first and second Korovkin-type approximation theorems by incorporating Bessel statistical convergence, providing a more robust and comprehensive framework than existing results.

BACKGROUNDCutaneous lichen planus (LP) is a recalcitrant, difficult-to-treat, inflammatory skin disease characterized by pruritic, flat-topped, violaceous papules on the skin. Baricitinib is an oral Janus kinase (JAK) 1/2 inhibitor that interrupts the signaling pathway of IFN-γ, a cytokine implicated in the pathogenesis of LP.METHODSIn this phase II trial, 12 patients with cutaneous LP received 2 mg daily baricitinib for 16 weeks, accompanied by in-depth spatial, single-cell, and bulk transcriptomic profiling of pre- and posttreatment samples.

Article Synopsis
  • * Conducted in early 2024, the qualitative research involved interviews with 25 HCPs (doctors, pharmacists, and nurses) who had limited knowledge about AI but recognized its potential benefits.
  • * Despite some concerns, HCPs were open to AI adoption, believing it could enhance efficiency and reduce errors in healthcare, suggesting that steps should be taken by policymakers to facilitate this integration.

Article Synopsis
  • - A study investigated the cardiotoxic side effects of 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), a chemotherapy drug for GI/colorectal cancer, focusing on how factors like age, sex, and health conditions influenced these side effects.
  • - Conducted with 396 patients, the research found that 28.5% experienced cardiotoxic symptoms, with anginal pain and myocardial infarction being the most common issues, particularly among those on combination therapy.
  • - Key risk factors for developing cardiotoxicity included pre-existing heart conditions, treatment duration, obesity, and smoking, highlighting the need for careful monitoring in patients receiving 5-FU.

  • The study aimed to estimate the occurrence rates and identify factors linked to erythema nodosum (EN) and pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) in kids with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
  • Using data from the ImproveCareNow registry, researchers analyzed visits of patients under 21 years old, focusing on demographics, disease severity, and other health factors.
  • Results showed that EN occurred in 1.57% and PG in 0.90% of visits; both conditions were linked to more severe IBD and related complications like arthritis and uveitis, with a small percentage experiencing both EN and PG.

Introduction: Endogenous trace amines such as tryptamine and 3-iodothyronamine (T1AM) are present in mammalian tissues at very low concentrations. They produce their actions by activating surface G protein-coupled receptors known as trace amine-associated receptors (TAARs).

Objective: The study was designed to investigate the possible vasoconstrictor effects of tryptamine, T1AM, and the selective TAAR1 agonist RO5263397 in isolated perfused rat kidney.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to create a model that identifies children at higher risk for severe complications from diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state (HHS), focusing on data during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • It analyzed clinical data from over 4,500 hospital admissions from 2010 to 2023, using earlier years to train the model and recent years to test its accuracy.
  • Key findings indicated that factors like type 2 diabetes and high glucose levels were significant predictors of adverse outcomes, with an increased risk observed during the pandemic, although risks decreased in later years.
