Endometriosis, a prevalent but debilitating condition affecting women, poses significant challenges in diagnosis and management. The current 2024 guideline, developed by the Korean Society of Endometriosis (KSE), builds upon the 2018 KSE guideline. This guideline aims to provide customized recommendations tailored to Korea's unique clinical aspects and medical environment, and addresses key areas such as diagnosis, medical and surgical management, considerations for special populations, and its complex relationship with cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • A study of over 2.5 million young females showed that those with depression had a higher likelihood of developing uterine leiomyoma compared to those without depression.
  • The risk of developing these tumors was notably greater in individuals with recurrent depression.
  • It is recommended that young females with depression undergo screening for uterine leiomyoma, especially if they are older or have cholesterol issues.

Article Synopsis
  • Adenomyosis, linked to female infertility, has seen changing diagnosis and treatment methods due to better imaging like MRI, prompting this study on its trends in South Korea.
  • Analyzed NHIS data from 2002 to 2016 revealed that the prevalence of adenomyosis increased significantly from 1.42 to 7.50 per 1000 individuals, and incidence rates rose from 1.62 to 4.12 per 1000 people.
  • The study also noted a rise in uterus-preserving surgeries for adenomyosis treatment, suggesting a growing focus on fertility preservation through improved diagnosis and management.

Objectives: Bone mineral density (BMD) is measured in the hip and posteroanterior spine; moreover, according to the 2019 International Society for Clinical Densitometry guidelines, unilateral hip can be used. This study aimed to determine whether there is a difference between the BMD of both the femurs in postmenopausal women.

Methods: A total of 343 postmenopausal women were enrolled in this study from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2019 at a single tertiary hospital.

The treatment strategy for postmenopausal symptoms resulting from estrogen deficiency in breast cancer survivors receiving endocrine therapy should differ from that in normal women. Several nonhormonal pharmacological therapies can be used to treat vasomotor symptoms. Cognitive-behavioral therapy can help alleviate psychophysiological symptoms, including depression and sleep disorders.

Endometriosis consists of ectopic endometrial epithelial cells (EEECs) and ectopic endometrial stromal cells (EESCs) mixed with heterogeneous stromal cells. To address how endometriosis-constituting cells are different from normal endometrium and among endometriosis subtypes and how their molecular signatures are related to phenotypic manifestations, we analyzed ovarian endometrial cyst (OEC), superficial peritoneal endometriosis (SPE), and deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) from 12 patients using single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq). We identified 11 cell clusters, including EEEC, EESC, fibroblasts, inflammatory/immune, endothelial, mesothelial, and Schwann cells.

Objectives: This study aimed to demonstrate the bone mineral density (BMD) and body composition in postmenopausal women with knee osteoarthritis (OA) who underwent surgical treatment, such as total knee arthroplasty, osteotomy, or meniscectomy.

Methods: A total of 254 women with OA aged 50 years who underwent surgical treatment were enrolled in this study. We evaluated obesity-related factors, muscle components, and BMD using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.

This study aimed to explore the correlation between MRI features, clinical risk factors, and symptoms associated with adenomyosis. Overall, 112 patients with pathologically confirmed adenomyosis were included in this retrospective study. MRI findings and clinical presentation, including visual analog scale (VAS) scores, cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) and hemoglobin levels, and parity, were analyzed.

Since its introduction, laparoscopic surgery has been often preferred over open surgery in obstetrics and gynecology due to its advantages, such as less bleeding, lower incidence of adhesions, reduced postoperative pain, short hospital stay, and quick return to daily life. However, in the case of complex surgeries, laparoscopy presented some limitations. Nonetheless, since the 1980s, medical robots have been introduced to overcome the technical limitations of laparoscopy and start a new age for minimally invasive surgery.

This study evaluates the efficacy and safety of fractional CO lasers for treating genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) in Korean women. The patients received three laser applications at an interval of 4 weeks each. The severity of GSM symptoms was assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS) at baseline and at every visit.

Remifentanil is widely used for intraoperative analgesia, but often causes remifentanil-induced hyperalgesia (RIH) and related side effects. Dexmedetomidine, a non-opioid analgesic, has been used as an alternative to remifentanil to prevent RIH. We aimed to investigate the effect of dexmedetomidine on postoperative recovery after gynecological laparoscopy.

Article Synopsis
  • Estrogen plays a crucial role in managing glucose levels and insulin sensitivity in women, particularly those with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) after menopause, where the risk of severe hypoglycemia (SH) increases.
  • A study analyzing data from over 180,000 postmenopausal women with T2DM found that those with a longer reproductive life span (RLS) experienced fewer SH events, with each additional 5 years of RLS further reducing risk.
  • The findings suggest that prolonged exposure to ovarian hormones may help decrease the occurrence of SH in postmenopausal women with T2DM, and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was linked to reduced SH risk.

Menopause is a normal phenomenon in a woman's life cycle involving multiple health-related issues that contribute to physical instability. Changes in the immune system in postmenopausal women are caused by estrogen deprivation along with age. Increased proinflammatory serum marker levels, cytokine responses in body cells, decreased CD4 T and B lymphocyte levels, and natural killer cell cytotoxic activity are also observed during postmenopause.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated the relationship between uric acid levels and bone mineral density (BMD) in 328 postmenopausal women, finding no significant correlation between the two factors.
  • - Participants were categorized into three groups based on uric acid levels, and while some blood parameters were higher in those with elevated uric acid, no notable differences in BMD were observed among the groups.
  • - Both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses indicated that serum uric acid levels do not affect BMD, leading to the conclusion that uric acid is not associated with bone density in postmenopausal women.

Although uterine leiomyoma causes many problems, including infertility, there are few studies that have investigated the epidemiologic characteristics of uterine leiomyoma in South Korea. The aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence and incidence of uterine leiomyoma in South Korea and analyze the treatment trends. Women of reproductive age (15-54 years) were selected from the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) sample cohort dataset, which was collected from 2002 to 2013.
