To prevent immediate mortality in patients with a tracheostomy tube, it is essential to ensure timely suctioning or replacement of the tube. Breathing sounds at the entrance of tracheostomy tubes were recorded with a microphone and analyzed using a spectrogram to detect airway problems. The sounds were classified into three categories based on the waveform of the spectrogram according to the obstacle status: normal breathing sounds (NS), vibrant breathing sounds (VS) caused by movable obstacles, and sharp breathing sounds (SS) caused by fixed obstacles.

The aim of this national population-based retrospective study was to analyze the relationship between MetS and the incidence of HNC. In this Korean population-based cohort study, 9,598,085 subjects above the age of 20 were monitored from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2018. In the study population, a total of 10,732 individuals were newly diagnosed with HNC during the 10-year follow-up.

Background: Patients with cartilage invasion in hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPSCC) would benefit from partial laryngopharyngectomy (PLP).

Aims/objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the treatment outcomes of PLP for HPSCC with cartilage invasion, with a focus on the oncological safety and the function preservation.

Materials And Methods: We performed a retrospective review of 28 patients with HPSCC with thyroid or cricoid cartilage invasion who had undergone upfront surgery and were followed for more than one year between 1993 and 2019.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a hearing impairment (HI) caused by various clinical factors. Identifying the relationship between NIHL and nutrient consumption could help in reducing the prevalence of hearing loss. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between NIHL and dietary factors using data of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination survey (KNHANES).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed data from over 10 million health check-ups in Korea to investigate the link between smoking and head and neck cancer (HNC).
  • - Current smokers had the highest risk for HNC (HR: 1.822), with ex-smokers also at increased risk (HR: 1.242), particularly for specific cancer types like laryngeal and oral cancers.
  • - A dose-dependent relationship was found; however, HNC incidence didn’t significantly increase for ex-smokers with less than 10 years of smoking or under 10 pack-years, suggesting that quitting smoking before these thresholds may reduce HNC risk.

In this study, through a cohort study of 10 million people, we investigated the association between estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and head and neck cancer (HNC) incidence. This is an observational cohort study using data from the national health claims database established by the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). We selected 9,598,085 participants older than 20 years who had undergone health checkups in 2009.

Background: We investigated the association between BMI and HNC subtype incidence in a cohort study of ten million people, adjusting for the effect of smoking and drinking. We also investigated the relationship between waist circumference (WC) and HNC subtype. Methods: All data used in this study originated from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database.

Background: Gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) is positively associated with several cancer types. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between GGT and head and neck cancer (HNC) incidence in a cohort of 10 million people, considering effects of smoking and alcohol consumption.

Methods: All data used in this study were obtained from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database.

Article Synopsis
  • Mucosal margins often shrink by 30−40% after surgery for oral and oropharyngeal cancers, leading to an unclear impact of close margins on patient prognosis.
  • A study of 418 patients showed that while a significant number had clear margins, 5-year disease-free survival rates varied among groups based on margin status, with only close and positive margins showing a significant difference in survival outcomes.
  • Despite finding no significant differences in overall survival between patients with close and negative margins, the study suggests more research is needed to better understand the implications of close margins on cancer recurrence.

Background: Descriptive epidemiologists have repeatedly reported that males are more susceptible to head and neck cancers. However, most published data are those of cross-sectional studies, and no population-based cohort study has yet been published. The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of head and neck cancers in healthy males with females.

Article Synopsis
  • *In a review of 54 cases, only 11.1% exhibited contralateral lymph node metastases (LNM), primarily at level II.
  • *Contralateral LNM correlated with advanced disease features like T stage and extracapsular spread but did not affect five-year disease-specific survival rates.

Background: Whether dynamic changes of metabolic syndrome (MetS) affects the subsequent laryngeal cancer occurrence remains unknown.

Objective: This study investigated the effects of changes of MetS on the incidence of laryngeal cancer due to a lack of knowledge regarding the development of MetS in Korean population.

Methods: A total of 6,757,048 individuals who received national health checkup in 2009 and follow-up health examination in 2011 were analyzed and followed up until 2018.

Article Synopsis
  • * Results from 65 experts indicated that surgery was preferred for HPV-positive T2N0M0 cases, while treatment options varied significantly for T2N1M0 and T2N3M0 cases, highlighting differences based on specialist background.
  • * The findings suggest a trend of surgical preference for earlier-stage cancers and a shift towards concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) for advanced cases, indicating a need for future multidisciplinary consensus guidelines on treatment strategies.

Voice changes may be the earliest signs in laryngeal cancer. We investigated whether automated voice signal analysis can be used to distinguish patients with laryngeal cancer from healthy subjects. We extracted features using the software package for speech analysis in phonetics (PRAAT) and calculated the Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) from voice samples of a vowel sound of /a:/.

Background: High-risk (HR) human papillomavirus (HPV) is found in a subset of head and neck (HN) squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs). For oropharyngeal SCCs, HR HPV positivity is known to be associated with good prognosis, and a separate staging system for HPV-associated carcinomas using p16 immunohistochemistry (IHC) as a surrogate test has been adopted in the 8th American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system. We examined the HR HPV status and the genotype distribution in five HN subsites.
