Article Synopsis
  • Executive functions (EFs) are interconnected skills that impact academic success, yet they are frequently studied in isolation, making it hard to see how they work together.
  • A study involving over 1200 students aged 7-15 utilized nine EF assessments to create cognitive profiles and analyzed their correlation with academic performance in reading and math.
  • The findings highlighted that while students exhibited different EF profiles, these variations did not demonstrate a straightforward link between specific EFs and academic achievement, suggesting diverse cognitive pathways can lead to success.

The CSANZ/RANZCR Position Statement on Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (CMRI) is intended to support and foster the provision of quality, safe CMRI services in Australia and New Zealand. This document specifically pertains to CMRI in adults, as distinct from general vascular MRI or paediatric imaging, and provides certification and recertification requirements.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the recovery of cardiac diagnostic procedure volumes in Oceania during the COVID-19 pandemic by comparing data from March 2019, April 2020, and April 2021 across various health facilities.
  • Results showed that 11,902 procedures were performed in April 2021, slightly below pre-pandemic levels, while the rest of the world had similar recovery rates, indicating a small decline in both regions.
  • Although there were no significant differences in overall recovery rates, anatomical coronary testing in Oceania demonstrated poorer recovery compared to the rest of the world, raising concerns about specific diagnostic procedures.

Many species are shifting their ranges in response to climate-driven environmental changes, particularly in high-latitude regions. However, the patterns of dispersal and colonization during range shifting events are not always clear. Understanding how populations are connected through space and time can reveal how species navigate a changing environment.

Objectives: To understand the role and future implications of social distancing on mental health and substance use in young adults between the ages of 18 and 35 living in high-disease-prevalent areas of New York.

Methods: Participants completed a self-administered online survey through Qualtrics.

Results: 43.

Article Synopsis
  • Musical instrument training is linked to better academic skills in kids, but access to this training is limited for some, creating disparities.
  • A study investigated a digital rhythm game as an alternative to traditional instrument training, showing it could improve reading fluency in children, especially by enhancing their rhythmic timing.
  • The findings suggest that while rhythm training benefits reading, it does not significantly affect math skills or other cognitive functions like attention or working memory.

In this pilot study, a human intravenous injection of low-dose endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide, LPS) model was used to test if fibromyalgia is associated with altered immune responses to Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) activation. Eight women with moderately-severe fibromyalgia and eight healthy women were administered LPS at 0.1 ng/kg in session one and 0.

Albatross are the largest seabirds on Earth and have a suite of adaptations for their pelagic lifestyle. Rather than having a bill made of a single piece of keratin, Procellariiformes have a compound rhamphotheca, made of several joined plates. Drivers of the shape of the albatross bill have not been explored.

Background: Cardiac metastases from neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are being detected with increasing frequency, although the optimal imaging strategy remains unclear. We performed a single-center retrospective study to explore the role of somatostatin receptor positron emission tomography/computed tomography (SSTR PET/CT) and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) in NEN cardiac metastases, determine the degree of concordance between the findings of these imaging modalities, and examine the advantages and disadvantages of each imaging technique. A secondary aim was to determine if cardiac metastases were associated with adverse cardiac events during peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT).

Article Synopsis
  • Executive functions (EFs) are crucial for positive outcomes in life, but understanding their development has been challenging due to methodological issues.
  • A study was conducted with 1,286 middle childhood students (ages 8-14) using innovative adaptive assessments to measure key EFs: working memory, context monitoring, and interference resolution.
  • Findings indicate that by age 10, EFs are organized into three stable components, but their refinement continues evolving until around age 14.

This observational study aimed to determine whether individuals with fibromyalgia (FM) exhibit higher levels of neuroinflammation than healthy controls (HCs), as measured with positron emission tomography using [ 18 F]DPA-714, a second-generation radioligand for the translocator protein (TSPO). Fifteen women with FM and 10 HCs underwent neuroimaging. Distribution volume (V T ) was calculated for in 28 regions of interest (ROIs) using Logan graphical analysis and compared between groups using multiple linear regressions.

The present study tests two predictions stemming from the hypothesis that a source of difficulty with rational numbers is interference from whole number magnitude knowledge. First, inhibitory control should be an independent predictor of fraction understanding, even after controlling for working memory. Second, if the source of interference is whole number knowledge, then it should hinder fraction understanding.

Background: The pathophysiology of fibromyalgia (FM) is thought to include an overactive immune system, leading to central nervous system sensitization, allodynia, and hyperalgesia. We aimed to test this theory using an experimental immune system activation procedure and neuroimaging with magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI).

Methods: Twelve women with FM and 13 healthy women (healthy controls; HC) received 0.

Article Synopsis
  • * Research often takes place in controlled lab settings, which may not accurately reflect real-life school environments, and tends to focus narrowly on specific academic skills rather than broader academic success.
  • * In a study of over 700 students aged 9-14, it was found that sustained attention positively correlated with both targeted academic assessments (like math fluency and reading comprehension) and broader measures (such as standardized test scores).

Background: The programmable intermittent epidural bolus (PIEB) has been popularized as the optimal delivery technique for labor analgesia. Suggested advantages of this method are less local anesthetic consumption, improved maternal satisfaction, potentially shorter duration of labor, and decreased workload requirements for the anesthesia providers. However, a manual bolus is still routinely used for breakthrough pain when the PIEB is underperforming.

Cytoreduction surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy is a complex and painful procedure that can cause postoperative hypotension and coagulopathy. Epidural analgesia may worsen hypotension and is contraindicated in the setting of coagulopathy. While alternative regional techniques are being explored, the use of erector spinae plane blocks has not been reported.

Diving is a relatively uncommon and highly specialized foraging strategy in birds, mostly observed within the Aequorlitornithes (waterbirds) by groups such as penguins, cormorants and alcids. Three key diving techniques are employed within waterbirds: wing-propelled pursuit diving (e.g.

We report the case of a 23-year-old parturient who received epidural analgesia and was subsequently diagnosed with Evans syndrome (ES). The diagnosis was made after a complete blood count (CBC) resulted in severe anemia and a platelet count of less than 10K/µL. To further complicate this case, the patient developed post-delivery pleuritic chest pain and pulmonary emboli (PE), and a chest computed tomography (CT) scan showed bilateral ground-glass lung opacities.

Relational thinking, the ability to represent abstract, generalizable relations, is a core component of reasoning and human cognition. Relational thinking contributes to fluid reasoning and academic achievement, particularly in the domain of math. However, due to the complex nature of many fluid reasoning tasks, it has been difficult to determine the degree to which relational thinking has a separable role from the cognitive processes collectively known as executive functions (EFs).

Objective: The aim of the study is to investigate relationships between inflammatory analytes and symptoms of pain and fatigue in Gulf War illness (GWI).

Methods: In this preliminary study, 12 male veterans meeting GWI criteria provided daily blood samples and symptom ratings over 25 days. Linear mixed models were used to analyze associations between symptoms and sera concentrations of cytokines, acute phase proteins, insulin, and brain-derived neurotropic factor.
