Purpose: Coffee consumption is a well-known contributor to tooth discoloration, and the extent of staining is influenced by the chemical composition of the coffee. This study investigated the associations of coffee roasting level, chlorogenic acid (CGA) content, absorbance level, and their combined effects with tooth discoloration.

Methods: Bovine tooth enamel specimens were immersed in light, medium, and dark roasts of four coffee types (two Arabica and two Robusta coffees) for 72 h.

Multi-biomarker analysis can enhance the accuracy of the single-biomarker analysis by reducing the errors caused by genetic and environmental differences. For this reason, multi-biomarker analysis shows higher accuracy in early and precision diagnosis. However, conventional analysis methods have limitations for multi-biomarker analysis because of their long pre-processing times, inconsistent results, and large sample requirements.

Transition metal-based oxides with similar oxidation activities for catalytic hydrocarbon combustion have attracted much attention. In this study, a new class of metal high-entropy oxides (CoMnNiFeAl)O ( = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) with a porous structure was fabricated through a simple and inexpensive NaCl template-assisted sol-gel approach, which was employed for the catalytic oxidation of propane. The results indicated that the content of cobalt has a great impact on its activity, and the (CoMnNiFeAl)O catalyst exhibited the best catalytic activity.

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a key ingredient for various 2D van der Waals heterostructure devices, but the exact role of h-BN encapsulation in relation to the internal defects of 2D semiconductors remains unclear. Here, it is reported that h-BN encapsulation greatly removes the defect-related gap states by stabilizing the chemisorbed oxygen molecules onto the defects of monolayer WS crystals. Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) combined with theoretical analysis clearly confirms that the oxygen molecules are chemisorbed onto the defects of WS crystals and are fixated by h-BN encapsulation, with excluding a possibility of oxygen molecules trapped in bubbles or wrinkles formed at the interface between WS and h-BN.

Strain engineering has been employed as a crucial technique to enhance the electrical properties of semiconductors, especially in Si transistor technologies. Recent theoretical investigations have suggested that strain engineering can also markedly enhance the carrier mobility of two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). The conventional methods used in strain engineering for Si and other bulk semiconductors are difficult to adapt to ultrathin 2D TMDs.

In recent years, target recognition technology for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images has witnessed significant advancements, particularly with the development of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, acquiring SAR images requires significant resources, both in terms of time and cost. Moreover, due to the inherent properties of radar sensors, SAR images are often marred by speckle noise, a form of high-frequency noise.

We reveal the critical effect of ultrashort dephasing on the polarization of high harmonic generation in Dirac fermions. As the elliptically polarized laser pulse falls in or slightly beyond the multiphoton regime, the elliptically polarized high harmonic generation is produced and exhibits a characteristic polarimetry of the polarization ellipse, which is found to depend on the decoherence time . could then be determined to be a few femtoseconds directly from the experimentally observed polarimetry of high harmonics.

Although Si is extensively used in micro-nano electronics, its inherent optical absorption cutoff at 1100-nm limits its photonic and optoelectronic applications in visible to partly near infrared (NIR) spectral range. Recently, strain engineering has emerged as a promising approach for extending device functionality via tuning the material properties, including change in optical bandgap. In this study, the reduction in bandgap with applied strain was used for extending the absorption limit of crystalline Si up to 1310 nm beyond its intrinsic bandgap, which was achieved by creating the crumpled structures in Si nanomembranes (NMs).

Mesenchymal stem cells are recruited from the bone marrow into breast tumors, contributing to the creation of a tumor microenvironment that fosters tropism for breast tumors. However, the intrinsic mechanisms underlying the recruitment of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into the breast tumor microenvironment are still under investigation. Our discoveries identified zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) as a specific intrinsic molecule that plays a vital role in mediating the collective migration of MSCs towards breast tumor cells and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), which is a crucial factor secreted by breast tumor cells.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare short-term results from use of the direct anterior approach (DAA) and the conventional posterolateral approach (PLA) in performance of bipolar hemiarthroplasty for treatment of femoral intertrochanteric fractures in elderly patients.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective review of 100 patients with intertrochanteric fractures who underwent bipolar hemiarthroplasty was conducted. The PLA was used in 50 cases from 2016 to 2019; since that time we have used the DAA in 50 cases from 2019 to 2021.

Intestinal absorption is an important contributor to systemic cholesterol homeostasis. Niemann-Pick C1 Like 1 (NPC1L1) assists in the initial step of dietary cholesterol uptake, but how cholesterol moves downstream of NPC1L1 is unknown. We show that Aster-B and Aster-C are critical for nonvesicular cholesterol movement in enterocytes.

Background: Permanent first molars with severe dental caries, developmental defects, or involved in oral pathologies are at risk of poor prognosis in children. Accordingly, using the third molar to replace the first molar can be a good treatment option when third molar agenesis is predicted early. Thus, this retrospective cohort study aimed to develop criteria for early detection of mandibular third molar (L8) agenesis based on the developmental stages of mandibular canine (L3), first premolar (L4), second premolar (L5), and second molar (L7).

Article Synopsis
  • Cholesterol absorption in the intestine is influenced by Niemann-Pick C1 Like 1 (NPC1L1), the target of the drug ezetimibe, but how cholesterol moves after NPC1L1 is not well understood.
  • Aster-B and Aster-C proteins are essential for cholesterol transport in enterocytes, connecting NPC1L1 at the cell membrane and ACAT2 in the endoplasmic reticulum.
  • Mice missing Aster proteins have reduced cholesterol absorption and are less likely to develop high cholesterol from their diet, indicating that the Aster pathway is a potential target for treating cholesterol-related issues.

The cornea, with its delicate structure, is vulnerable to damage from physical, chemical, and genetic factors. Corneal transplantation, including penetrating and lamellar keratoplasties, can restore the functions of the cornea in cases of severe damage. However, the process of corneal transplantation presents considerable obstacles, including a shortage of available donors, the risk of severe graft rejection, and potentially life-threatening complications.
