Luteolin [2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-4-chromenone] is an active flavonoid compound from Lonicera japonica (Caprifoliaceae). Luteolin inhibits tumor cell proliferation, inflammatory and oxidative stress better, when compared with other flavonoids. In the present study, it was demonstrated that luteolin induces typical apoptosis in PC12 cells (derived from a pheochromocytoma of the rat adrenal medulla) accompanied by DNA fragmentation and formation of apoptotic bodies.

Naloxone is an opioid inverse agonist used in the treatment of opiate overdose, with well known pharmacology. In the present study, we determined the effects of naloxone on the unfolded protein response (UPR) in PC12 cells. Data from a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay indicated that naloxone may accelerate PC12 cell apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner.

The effect of α-asarone on impairment of cognitive performance caused by amnesic drug scopolamine was investigated. Treatment with α-asarone attenuated scopolamine-induced cognitive deficits as evaluated by passive avoidance and Y-maze test. Administration of α-asarone for 15 d improved memory and cognitive function as indicated by an increase in transfer latency time and spontaneous alternation in passive avoidance and the Y-maze test respectively.

7-Ketocholesterol (7-Kchol, oxidized cholesterol) is an important mediator of cell death in atherosclerosis mediated by up-regulated Nox 4 gene expression. In the current study using the human colon cancer HT-29 cell line, we have demonstrated that 7-Kchol promotes endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress via gene up-regulation of ER chaperone and membrane kinases.

IL-18 production may enhance immune system defense against KG-1 cells ; NB4 cells, which are associated with good prognosis, do not produce IL-18. In this study, we treated KG-1 cells with IL-18 and used microarray technology to assess subsequent effects on gene expression. In UniGene-array of 7488 human genes, expression of 57 genes, including stress related genes, increased at least 2-fold, whereas expression of 48 genes decreased at least 2-fold.

Purpose: The purposes of this study were to apply data mining tool to nursing specific knowledge discovery process and to identify the utilization of data mining skill for clinical decision making.

Methods: Data mining based on rough set model was conducted on a large clinical data set containing NMDS elements. Randomized 1,000 patient data were selected from year 1998 database which had at least one of the five most frequently used nursing diagnoses.

Purpose: This study was to develop an online "alternative therapy and health promotion" class for university students and to evaluate its changes.

Method: The online class was developed based on the Instructional Systems Development (ISD) model and model of Web-Based Instruction (WBI) developmental process. This was a quasi- experimental, one group pretest-posttest design.
