Objective: Bipolar disorder (BD) is marked by significant change in mood and energy levels with sleep disturbance a common feature, resulting in diminished quality of life and impaired daily functioning. This study assessed the association between BD-polygenic risk scores (PRS) and hypnotics in bipolar I disorder (BD-I) patients.

Methods: Large-sample data were collected from the genome-wide association study of a multicenter Bipolar Genomic Study, and 1,394 BD-I patients with available medication information were divided into two groups depending on whether they used hypnotics or not.

Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the incidence and characteristics of intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation after cataract surgery in South Korea.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the incidence of IOL dislocation after cataract surgery in patients diagnosed between 2002 and 2021. Data of all pseudophakic patients who underwent secondary IOL or IOL exchange surgeries due to IOL dislocation were extracted from the Korean National Health Insurance System database and the Korean Standard Classification of Diseases 7th Revision codes.

Background: We assessed the association of prescription data with clinical manifestations and polygenic risk scores (PRS) in patients with bipolar I disorder.

Methods: We enrolled 1471 individuals with BID and divided them into several groups according to treatment options and clinical manifestations. BD-PRS of each patient was calculated using the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium data.

Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC) remains a significant health burden due to tumor heterogeneity and treatment resistance, emphasizing the need for improved biological understanding and tailored therapies. This study enrolled 31 HNSCC patients for the establishment of patient-derived tumor organoids (PDOs), which faithfully maintained genomic features and histopathological traits of primary tumors. Long-term culture preserved key characteristics, affirming PDOs as robust representative models.

Although facial flushing after drinking alcohol (alcohol flushing response) is common in Asian populations, the epidemiological features in a large sample have been investigated in only a few studies. This study assessed the epidemiologic characteristics and associated factors for alcohol flushing in a Korean population. This study was based on data collected during the 2019 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES).

Background: Heart rate variability (HRV) is a useful tool for evaluating cardiovascular autonomic nervous system (ANS) functions. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the potential effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) protocols on HRV parameters.

Methods: This study acquired 97 comparisons from 24 qualified studies for data synthesis.

This study compares the changes in Quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG), loudness dependence of auditory evoked potentials (LDAEP), and mismatch negativity (MMN) in the case of bipolar depression, mania, and euthymia in a single patient. the characteristic of QEEG in this patient with mixed depression was an increase in alpha; in mixed mania, there was little increase in alpha, and the decrease in delta, theta, and beta was noticeable. LDAEP increased more in the manic phase than in the depressive phase.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to differentiate patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS) from those with primary insomnia by examining their brain connectivity using quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG).
  • - Significant differences were found in brain regions like the primary somatosensory cortex and visual cortex between the two groups, with certain connectivity levels correlating inversely with RLS symptom severity.
  • - The research suggests that specific brain areas could serve as diagnostic markers for RLS and highlights the potential of QEEG as a tool for understanding its mechanisms, warranting further investigation.

Article Synopsis
  • * While AD prevalence decreased in infants (0-1 years), it significantly increased among older age groups, particularly those aged 12-19 and 20 years or older, with moderate to severe cases rising from 30.96% to 39.78%.
  • * Despite the increasing severity of AD, treatment predominantly relied on corticosteroids with little change in prescription patterns, highlighting the need for new treatment guidelines focused on safer and more effective biologic therapies

Purpose: Clinical implications of neoadjuvant immunotherapy in patients with locally advanced but resectable head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) remain largely unexplored.

Patients And Methods: Patients with resectable HNSCC were randomized to receive a single dose of preoperative durvalumab (D) with or without tremelimumab (T) before resection, followed by postoperative (chemo)radiotherapy based on multidisciplinary discretion and 1-year D treatment. Artificial intelligence (AI)-powered spatial distribution analysis of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes and high-dimensional profiling of circulating immune cells tracked dynamic intratumoral and systemic immune responses.

Background: We conducted a one-year, retrospective, mirror-image study to investigate the clinical effectiveness and safety of aripiprazole once monthly (AOM) in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). We compared pre-treatment conditions with outcomes after 12 months of AOM treatment.

Methods: Seventy-five bipolar patients were recruited from 12 hospitals in Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • Understanding the cost structure of cancer care is essential for creating effective budgets and allocating limited resources for patient support.
  • The study analyzed claims data from Korea, focusing on seven major cancer types and evaluating medical costs over a patient’s survival period from diagnosis until death.
  • It identified three distinct phases of cancer survival (initial, continuing, and terminal), highlighting that medical costs vary significantly between these phases and suggest implications for better budget management in healthcare.

Importance: Vitiligo is a multifactorial, depigmenting skin disorder characterized by selective loss of melanocytes. Large-scale studies are lacking to determine the risk of vitiligo in transplant recipients with graft-vs-host disease (GVHD).

Objective: To investigate the incidence rates and risk of vitiligo in patients who had received solid organ transplant (SOT) or hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) overall and by HSCT graft type and concomitant GVHD.

Background: Dopamine (DA), a vital neurotransmitter, plays a critical role in the human brain and relates to neuropsychiatric disorders such as Parkinson's disease and schizophrenia. Numerous studies have explored detection of such biomarkers through surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). However, most of the studies focused on SERS detection face significant challenges with plasmonic nanostructure development.
