The use of TMSOTf as an additive to promote the facile formation of a strained norcaradiene intermediate provides convenient access to highly condensed multicyclic tropones in high yields. Three bioactive α-amino-β-hydroxy acids, L-threo-β-hydroxyaspartic acid, L-threo-β-hydroxyasparagine, and L-threo-β-benzyloxyaspartic acid, were synthesized in good yields (58-83%) from the common chiral intermediate, and the chemoselective peptide bond formation at the α-amino group, β-hydroxy group, or α-carboxylic acid of the common intermediate was possible to afford the corresponding dipeptide, tripeptide, or didepsipeptide intermediate in 46~77% yields (in three-to-four steps) due to the orthogonal protective groups on the chiral intermediate.

We report a long-term survival case of a primary malignant intracerebral nerve sheath tumor (MINST) occurring in the right frontal lobe of a 13-year old boy. After the gross total resection (GTR), we have performed radiation therapy but it recurred 50 months after the surgery, so the second GTR was performed. In this study, a composite hollow-fiber membrane with a thin polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) active layer on a polyetherimide (PEI) macroporous support was used for pervaporative separation of ethanol produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae from glucose fermentation broth. The pervaporation performance for ethanol/water binary mixtures was strongly dependent on the feed concentration and operating temperature for ethanol concentrations of 1-10%.
