Background: Understanding the patterns of emergency department (ED) visits of patients with asthma is important for disease control and prevention of exacerbations.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of adult patients who visited EDs because of their asthma.

Methods: Patients with asthma, ages ≥19 years old, who visited 117 EDs throughout Korea between January 2007 and December 2012 were identified in the National Emergency Department Information System (NEDIS) data base using the International Classification of Disease, 10th revision, codes J45 (asthma) and J46 (status asthmaticus).

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the status of inpatient care for acute first-ever stroke at three general hospitals in Korea to provide basic data and useful information on the development of comprehensive and systematic rehabilitation care for stroke patients.

Materials And Methods: This study conducted a retrospective complete enumeration survey of all acute first-ever stroke patients admitted to three distinct general hospitals for 2 years by reviewing medical records. Both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes were included.

  • It found a significant decrease in hospitalized AMI patients from 21,362 in 2006 to 15,893 in 2010, and in stroke patients from 80,679 in 2006 to 73,501 in 2010.
  • The age-standardized incidence rates also dropped significantly for both AMI (41.6 to 29.4 cases per 100,000 population) and stroke (172.8 to 135.1 cases per 100,000 population), attributed to improved treatment strategies and preventive measures.
