Hemophilia A (HA) is caused by mutations in coagulation factor VIII (FVIII). Genome editing in conjunction with patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) is a promising cell therapy strategy, as it replaces dysfunctional proteins resulting from genetic mutations with normal proteins. However, the low expression level and short half-life of FVIII still remain significant limiting factors in the efficacy of these approaches in HA.

Background: The efficacy of high-flow nasal oxygenation (HFNO) in improving oxygenation is influenced by several factors, and its effectiveness is not always guaranteed. Therefore, we aimed to compare the effects of HFNO and standard low-flow nasal oxygenation during rigid bronchoscopy in the apneic patients.

Methods: All patients were administered general anesthesia with full muscle relaxation and were randomly assigned to receive either HFNO (HFNO group) or standard low-flow oxygenation (Standard group).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the outcomes of mechanical cardiopulmonary resuscitation (MCPR) versus manual CPR for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients during the COVID-19 pandemic in South Korea.
  • Data were analyzed from a national database, comparing survival rates and outcomes from 2016 to 2021, particularly focusing on the pandemic years (2020-2021) versus the non-pandemic years (2018-2019).
  • Results showed that while MCPR was associated with lower survival rates compared to manual CPR overall, survival rates did not significantly differ between the two methods during the pandemic, highlighting that MCPR did not provide superior outcomes despite its benefits for reducing infection risk among healthcare workers.

Various scoring systems have been developed to predict outcomes in patients with non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (NVUGIB). However, their accuracy remains unclear. This study aimed to compare and validate the predictive performance of several established scoring systems in patients with NVUGIB: Glasgow-Blatchford score (GBS) and the age, blood tests, and comorbidities (ABC), mental status-anesthesiologist score-pulse-albumin-systolic blood pressure-hemoglobin (MAP(ASH)), Japanese, and Charlson comorbidity index-in-hospital onset-albumin-mental status-Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status-steroids (CHAMPS) scores.

Background/aim: Lung cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, necessitating the development of effective early diagnostic strategies. Despite advancements in imaging and screening technologies, late-stage diagnoses remain common, limiting treatment options and reducing survival rates. Thus, there is a critical need for reliable, minimally invasive biomarkers to improve early detection and patient outcomes.

The macrofollicular subtype of papillary thyroid cancer (MFS-PTC) is a rare subtype often leading to a challenging diagnosis. To evaluate the ultrasonographic (US) features and clinical implication of MFS-PTC. Records of 14 patients histologically diagnosed with MFS-PTC at our institution over a period of 16 years were retrospectively reviewed.

Introduction: Optimizing vascular access for hemodialysis in end-stage kidney disease is crucial. While arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) are preferred for better patency and fewer complications, many patients require alternatives options like arteriovenous grafts (AVGs) due to anatomical constraints. This study compares outcomes between elbow and upper arm (UA) basilic veins for forearm loop AVGs, highlighting the potential benefits of the UA basilic vein to improve patency and feasibility in patients with poor elbow veins through retrospective analysis.

  • - Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects eating and quality of life, with existing treatments not fully controlling symptoms for about one-third of patients.
  • - A phase 2 study of cendakimab, an anti-IL-13 monoclonal antibody, showed promise in reducing inflammation in EoE patients, leading to a phase 3 study aimed at further evaluating its effectiveness and safety.
  • - The phase 3 study will enroll 399 participants to test different dosing regimens of cendakimab against a placebo, focusing on symptoms like difficulty swallowing and histological improvements in eosinophil counts over 48 weeks.

  • Sudden cardiac arrest is a critical global health issue, particularly concerning out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA), where bystander CPR and AEDs play a vital role in improving survival rates and neurological outcomes.
  • A study analyzed data from South Korea from 2016 to 2021, focusing on adult OHCA cases to compare the effectiveness of bystander CPR with and without AED usage on patient survival and neurological recovery.
  • The findings revealed that while survival rates were higher for those treated with AEDs (46.6%) versus those without (23.0%), adjusting for other factors showed no significant difference in survival rates or neurological outcomes between the two groups, highlighting the importance of AED accessibility and preparedness among bystanders.

This study aimed to establish a deep learning-based predictive model for the prognosis of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). Data from 1108 patients with SSNHL between January 2015 and May 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients underwent standardized treatment protocols including high-dose steroid therapy and hearing outcomes were assessed after three months using Siegel's criteria and the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) classification.

This research introduces a vascular phenotypic and proteomic analysis (VPT) platform designed to perform high-throughput experiments on vascular development. The VPT platform utilizes an open-channel configuration that facilitates angiogenesis by precise alignment of endothelial cells, allowing for a 3D morphological examination and protein analysis. We study the effects of antiangiogenic agents─bevacizumab, ramucirumab, cabozantinib, regorafenib, wortmannin, chloroquine, and paclitaxel─on cytoskeletal integrity and angiogenic sprouting, observing an approximately 50% reduction in sprouting at higher drug concentrations.

  • The study investigates the relationship between high body mass index (BMI) and the BRAFV600E mutation in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), focusing on whether the association varies with tumor size.
  • Out of 6,438 PTC patients, 79.2% had the BRAFV600E mutation, and a significant link between high BMI and the mutation was observed only in patients with tumors larger than 1 cm.
  • The findings imply that while obesity may be a risk factor for thyroid cancer, its impact on mutation status may depend on the size of the primary tumor, highlighting the complexity of cancer risk factors.

  • - This study aimed to find MRI features that could help differentiate urothelial carcinoma with squamous differentiation (UCSD) from conventional urothelial carcinoma (UC) in bladder cancer patients before surgery.
  • - Researchers analyzed MRI scans of 99 patients and found that significant indicators of UCSD included varied tumor signal intensity in specific MRI images, with marked severe necrosis being a strong predictor.
  • - The conclusion suggests that observing marked severe necrosis on preoperative MRI can help identify UCSD, potentially guiding treatment decisions for patients with muscle-invasive bladder carcinoma.

Introduction: The widely employed Kidney Donor Profile Index (KDPI) scoring system, designed for assessing deceased donors (DD), plays a pivotal role in predicting graft function post kidney transplantation (KT). Given the dynamic nature of renal function, including serum creatinine (sCr), in managing DDs, it remains uncertain optimal timing to use KDPI for assessing postoperative graft function.

Methods: In this retrospective review, we assessed 246 DDs who were managed within a donor management program from January 2010 to December 2021.
