Comparison of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus community-acquired and healthcare-associated pneumonia.

Purpose: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is recognized as an important cause of not only healthcare-associated pneumonia (HCAP) but also community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). We determined the impact of MRSA on differences in clinical characteristics, courses, and outcomes between CAP and HCAP.

Materials And Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study on 78 adult patients admitted with MRSA pneumonia at a university-affiliated tertiary hospital between January 2008 and December 2011.

Facile preparation of hierarchical TiO2 nano structures: growth mechanism and enhanced photocatalytic H2 production from water splitting using methanol as a sacrificial reagent.

Owing to unique features, hierarchical nanostructure of TiO2 has superior photocatalytic activity. In this work a facile hydrothermal route has been explored to prepare 3D hierarchical TiO2 (3D-HTiO2), 1D/3D hybrid hierarchical TiO2 composite (HHC), and 3D hierarchical protonated titanate microspheres H2Ti2O5·H2O (3DHPTMS) at the expense of free-standing titania nanotube membrane (TiO2-Memb). It proceeded through the formation of peroxotitanium complex, a water-soluble Ti complex as an intermediate.

Factors associated with quality of life measured by EQ-5D in patients with nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease.

Purpose: The impact of pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial (pNTM) disease on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has not received significant attention in the literature. In this study, we compared the HRQoL in patients with pNTM disease and healthy subjects and identified influencing factors using EuroQol 5D (EQ-5D) data.

Methods: The present study used an age- and sex-matched case-control analysis from a cohort of 85 pNTM patients and 340 participants from a national survey.

Negative transcriptional regulation of mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) by nuclear TFAM.

The nuclear DNA-encoded mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) is synthesized in cytoplasm and transported into mitochondria. TFAM enhances both transcription and replication of mitochondrial DNA. It is unclear, however, whether TFAM plays a role in regulating nuclear gene expression.

Mechanisms underlying Plk1 polo-box domain-mediated biological processes and their physiological significance.

Mammalian polo-like kinase 1 (Plk1) has been studied intensively as a key regulator of various cell cycle events that are critical for proper M-phase progression. The polobox domain (PBD) present in Plk1's C-terminal noncatalytic region has been shown to play a central role in targeting the N-terminal kinase domain of Plk1 to specific subcellular locations. Subsequent studies reveal that PBD binds to a phosphorylated motif generated by one of the two mechanisms-self-priming by Plk1 itself or non-selfpriming by a Pro-directed kinase, such as Cdc2.

Dipeptidyl peptidase IV inhibitor protects against renal interstitial fibrosis in a mouse model of ureteral obstruction.

Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPPIV) is an exopeptidase that modulates the function of several substrates, among which insulin-releasing incretin hormones are the most well known. DPPIV also modulate substrates involved in inflammation, cell migration, and cell differentiation. Although DPPIV is highly expressed in proximal renal tubular cells, the role of DPPIV inhibition in renal disease is not fully understood.

Thiazole-based γ-building blocks as reverse-turn mimetic to design a gramicidin S analogue: conformational and biological evaluation.

This paper describes the ability of a new class of heterocyclic γ-amino acids named ATCs (4-amino(methyl)-1,3-thiazole-5-carboxylic acids) to induce turns when included in a tetrapeptide template. Both hybrid Ac-Val-(R or S)-ATC-Ile-Ala-NH2 sequences were synthesized and their conformations were studied by circular dichroism, NMR spectroscopy, MD simulations, and DFT calculations. It was demonstrated that the ATCs induced highly stable C9 pseudocycles in both compounds promoting a twist turn and a reverse turn conformation depending on their absolute configurations.

Fast and accurate finite element analysis of large-scale three-dimensional photonic devices with a robust domain decomposition method.

A fast and accurate full-wave technique based on the dual-primal finite element tearing and interconnecting method and the second-order transmission condition is presented for large-scale three-dimensional photonic device simulations. The technique decomposes a general three-dimensional electromagnetic problem into smaller subdomain problems so that parallel computing can be performed on distributed-memory computer clusters to reduce the simulation time significantly. With the electric fields computed everywhere, photonic device parameters such as transmission and reflection coefficients are extracted.

Intracellular delivery of desulfated heparin with bile acid conjugation alleviates T cell-mediated inflammatory arthritis via inhibition of RhoA-dependent transcellular diapedesis.

Heparin has a potential regulatory role in inflammatory diseases. However, the anticoagulant activity and poor oral bioavailability of heparin limit its use as an anti-inflammatory agent. Conjugation of bis-deoxycholic acid to 6-O-desulfated low molecular weight heparin (6DSHbD) was efficiently internalized by activated endothelial cells via a 2-step model, in which heparin attaches to adhesion molecules that facilitate accessibility of the bile acid conjugate to membrane transporters.

Obesity associated hypertension: new insights into mechanism.

With excess nutrition, the burden of obesity is a growing problem worldwide. The imbalance between energy intake and expenditure leads to variable disorders as all major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. There are many hypothetical mechanisms to explain obesity-associated hypertension.

A case of occupational hypersensitivity pneumonitis associated with trichloroethylene.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a toxic chemical commonly used as a degreasing agent, and it is usually found in a colorless or blue liquid form. TCE has a sweet, chloroform-like odor, and this volatile chlorinated organic chemical can cause toxic hepatitis, neurophysiological disorders, skin disorders, and hypersensitivity syndromes. However, the hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) attributed to TCE has rarely been reported.

Role of toll-like receptor 2 in ischemic demyelination and oligodendrocyte death.

White matter is frequently involved in ischemic stroke, and progressive ischemic white matter injuries are associated with various neurologic dysfunctions in the elderly population. Demyelination and oligodendrocyte (OL) loss are prominent features of ischemic white matter injury. Endothelin-1 injection into the internal capsule resulted in a localized demyelinating lesion in mice, where loss of OL lineage cells and inflammatory cell infiltration were observed accompanied by upregulation of toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2).

Development of reference materials to detect 15 different human papillomavirus genotypes.

Accurate human papillomavirus (HPV) typing is essential for evaluating and monitoring HPV vaccines in cervical cancer screening and in epidemiological surveys. In our country, different HPV DNA detection and genotyping methodologies have been established for diagnosing and monitoring HPV-related disease in clinical practice and for research. However, there is a lack of reference materials to standardize the methods for HPV detection and genotyping.

Serum calcium and phosphorus levels in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis: A multicentre study in Korea.

Background: In many countries, nephrologists follow clinical practice guidelines for mineral bone disorders to control secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) associated with abnormal serum calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) levels in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). The Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) Guidelines have long been used in Korea, and this study was undertaken to investigate the current status of serum Ca and P control in MHD patients.

Methods: Data were collected from a total of 1,018 patients undergoing MHD without intercurrent illness, in 17 hemodialysis centers throughout the country.

Effects of Toll-like receptor antagonist 4,5-dihydro-3-phenyl-5-isoxasole acetic acid on the progression of kidney disease in mice on a high-fat diet.

Background: Obesity-related metabolic disorders are closely associated with inflammation induced by innate immunity. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play a pivotal role in the innate immune system by activating proinflammatory signaling pathways. GIT27 (4,5-dihydro-3-phenyl-5-isoxasole acetic acid) is an active immunomodulatory agent that primarily targets macrophages and inhibits secretion of tumor necrosis factor α [as well as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-10, and interferon γ].

Red Ginseng-containing diet helps to protect mice and ferrets from the lethal infection by highly pathogenic H5N1 influenza virus.

The highly pathogenic (HP) H5N1 influenza virus is endemic in many countries and has a great potential for a pandemic in humans. The immune-enhancing prowess of ginseng has been known for millennia. We aimed to study whether mice and ferrets fed with Red Ginseng could be better protected from the lethal infections of HP H5N1 influenza virus than the infected unfed mice and ferrets.

High-density genotyping of immune loci in Koreans and Europeans identifies eight new rheumatoid arthritis risk loci.

Objective: A highly polygenic aetiology and high degree of allele-sharing between ancestries have been well elucidated in genetic studies of rheumatoid arthritis. Recently, the high-density genotyping array Immunochip for immune disease loci identified 14 new rheumatoid arthritis risk loci among individuals of European ancestry. Here, we aimed to identify new rheumatoid arthritis risk loci using Korean-specific Immunochip data.

Low-dose dexmedetomidine reduces emergence agitation after desflurane anaesthesia in children undergoing strabismus surgery.

Purpose: Emergence agitation (EA) is frequently observed in children undergoing general anaesthesia. This study tested whether the addition of an intra-operative low-dose infusion of dexmedetomidine to fentanyl treatment reduced the incidence of emergence delirium following desflurane anesthesia in children undergoing strabismus surgery.

Materials And Methods: A total of 96 children (1-5 years old) undergoing strabismus surgery were enrolled.

Orbital hematoma caused by bleeding from orbital branch of the infraorbital artery after reconstruction of an orbital fracture.

We experienced and report on a case of retrobulbar hematoma caused by bleeding from the orbital branch of the infraorbital artery after a medial orbital wall reconstruction.A healthy 28-year-old man struck his left eye while playing baseball before admission. A computed tomographic scan revealed an approximately 13 × 12-mm-sized fracture of the left orbit medial wall.

Polyvalent display of monosaccharides on ferritin protein cage nanoparticles for the recognition and binding of cell-surface lectins.

Carbohydrate-lectin interactions are important in many biological events. Endogenous cell-surface lectins are attractive markers for the recognition and targeting. Human ferritin protein cage nanoparticles (HFPCNs) are prepared as delivery nanoplatforms and two different types of monosaccharide derivatives; maleimido group terminated-mannopyranoside and galactopyranoside.

Transmissibility of novel H7N9 and H9N2 avian influenza viruses between chickens and ferrets.

Previous studies have shown that the H7N9 avian influenza virus cannot be transmitted efficiently between ferrets via respiratory droplets. Here, we studied the infectivity of the H7N9 avian influenza virus in chickens and its transmissibility from infected to naïve chickens and ferrets. The H7N9 virus (A/Anhui/1/2013) replicated poorly in chickens and could not be transmitted efficiently from infected chickens to naïve chickens and ferrets.

Pitx3 deficient mice as a genetic animal model of co-morbid depressive disorder and parkinsonism.

Approximately 40-50% of all patients with Parkinson׳s disease (PD) show symptoms and signs of depressive disorders, for which neither pathogenic understanding nor rational treatment are available. Using Pit3x-deficient mice, a model for selective nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurodegeneration, we tested depression-related behaviors and acute stress responses to better understand how a nigrostriatal dopaminergic deficit increases the prevalence of depressive disorders in PD patients. Pitx3-deficient mice showed decreased sucrose consumption and preference in the two-bottle free-choice test of anhedonia.

Resist-free antireflective nanostructured film fabricated by thermal-NIL.

Resist-free antireflective (AR) nanostructured films are directly fabricated on polycarbonate (PC) film using thermal-nanoimprint lithography (T-NIL) and the moth-eye shape of AR nanostructure is elaborately optimized with different oxygen reactive ion etching conditions. Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates are directly used as master molds of T-NIL for preparation of AR nanostructures on PC film without an additional T-NIL resist. AR nanostructures are well arranged with a period of about 200 nm and diameter of about 150 nm, which corresponds to those of the AAO template mold.

FGFR3 overexpression is prognostic of adverse outcome for muscle-invasive bladder carcinoma treated with adjuvant chemotherapy.

Background: Alterations in fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of urothelial carcinoma. However, its clinicopathological significance has not been clearly established, especially in muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC).

Objectives: The aim of our study was to investigate the mutation and overexpression of FGFR3 in MIBC cases from radical cystectomy and to analyze the prognostic and predictive significance in the groups with or without adjuvant chemotherapy.
