Coherent perfect absorption (CPA) has been studied in various fields, such as metasurface, photonics, and acoustics, because of its ability to perfectly absorb light at a specific wavelength. However, the narrow bandwidth of CPA makes its application to on-chip photonics challenging. This limitation can be overcome by using a broadband resonator.

Objective: We evaluated whether superficial lymphatic anatomy and functional lymph node drainage are symmetric between the right and left upper extremities of healthy female volunteers, and if handedness is associated with symmetry of superficial lymphatic anatomy.

Background: Symmetry of lymphatic anatomy has been assumed historically. This assumption of individual anatomic symmetry is being utilized clinically and in research without validation.

Background: Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is associated with a high mortality rate. Asian American (AsA) are among the fastest-growing populations in the United States, yet little is known about the disparity of GBC within this cohort. This study identified trends in treatment and outcomes for GBC in a disaggregated fashion, specifically for this population.

Background: There is a discrepancy in the surgical and endoscopic literature for managing duodenal perforations. Although often managed conservatively, surgical repair is the standard treatment for duodenal perforations. This contrasts with the gastroenterology literature, which now recommends endoscopic repair of duodenal perforations, which are more frequently iatrogenic from the growing field of advanced endoscopic procedures.

Background: Histotripsy is a novel, ultrasound-based ablative technique that was recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration for hepatic targets. It has several promising additional theoretical applications that need to be further investigated. Its basis as a nonthermal cavitational technology presents a unique advantage over existing thermal ablation techniques in maximizing local effects while minimizing adjacent tissue destruction.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) are characterized by dysregulated signaling pathways that are crucial for tumor formation and progression. The efficacy of traditional therapies is limited, particularly in the treatment of PNETs at an advanced stage. Epigenetic alterations profoundly impact the activity of signaling pathways in cancer development, offering potential opportunities for drug development.

Background: Advanced care planning (ACP) is the process of establishing goals for end-of-life care. We aimed to examine ACP's prevalence, associated factors, and impact in a cohort of patients undergoing gastrostomy tube procedures.

Methods: Adult patients who underwent gastrostomy tube placement from 2016 to 2021 at a tertiary center were identified.

Melanoma, a highly malignant and aggressive form of skin cancer, poses a significant global health threat, with limited treatment options and potential side effects. In this study, we developed a temperature-responsive hydrogel for skin regeneration with a controllable drug release. The hydrogel was fabricated using an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) of -isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA).

Background: The Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) population is among the fastest-growing population in the USA. However, this is not reflected in scientific research, in which ethnic groups are often combined. We identified trends in treatment and outcomes for pancreatic cancer in a disaggregated AANHPI population.

An enzyme-fueled transient volume phase transition (TVPT) of hydrogels under out-of-equilibrium conditions is reported. The approach takes inspiration from the metabolic cycle, comprising nutrient intake and anabolism/catabolism followed by waste excretion. The incorporation of methacrylic acid and acrylated trypsin in a polymeric hydrogel allowed the TVPT of the gel to be fueled by lysozyme.

An enhancement of the local electric field at the metal/dielectric interface of hybrid materials due to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) phenomenon plays a particularly important role in versatile research fields resulting in a distinct modification of the electrical, as well as optical, properties of the hybrid material. In this paper, we succeeded in visually confirming the LSPR phenomenon in the crystalline tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq) micro-rod (MR) hybridized with silver (Ag) nanowire (NW) in the form of photoluminescence (PL) characteristics. Crystalline Alq MRs were prepared by a self-assembly method under the mixed solution of protic and aprotic polar solvents, which could be easily applied to fabricate hybrid Alq/Ag structures.

Background: Epigenetic dysregulation is an integral step in the progression of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. We hypothesized that tumor suppressor repression by DNA methyltransferase 1 in pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors could be targeted with epigenetic treatment.

Methods: Resected pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors from 32 patients were stained for DNA methyltransferase 1 and scored.

Loss of expression of the gene, a subunit of the SWI/SNF complex, has been historically associated with thoracic . This loss of expression is extremely rare in gastric cancers, and its role in gastrointestinal tract carcinomas has not been fully elucidated. We report a case of a 73-year-old male with poorly differentiated, -deficient gastric cancer, showing that this immunophenotype is not limited to thoracic or advanced-stage tumors.

Secondary lymphedema is a debilitating disease characterized by abnormal soft tissue swelling and caused by lymphatic system dysfunction. Despite a high prevalence of secondary lymphedema after cancer treatments, current management is supportive and there are no approved therapeutic agents that can thwart disease progression. We have previously demonstrated that 9-cis-retinoic acid (9-cisRA) has the potential to be repurposed for lymphedema as it mitigates disease by promoting lymphangiogenesis at the site of lymphatic injury.

Objectives: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive disease with a poor prognosis. PDAC has poor response to immunotherapy because of its unique tumour microenvironment (TME). In an attempt to stimulate immunologically silent pancreatic cancer, we investigated the role of epigenetic therapy in modulating the TME to improve immunogenicity.

Background: In unresectable dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP), no clear guideline exists regarding the use of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) versus radiotherapy. This study reviews current literature regarding TKI and radiotherapy in unresectable DFSP.

Methods: Following PROSPERO registration (CRD42021232508), a systematic literature search was performed including all studies reporting clinical results of TKI and/or radiotherapy in the treatment of unresectable DFSP.

Adoptive cell therapy (ACT) using tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) has been gaining promise as a therapeutic option for metastatic melanoma. By harnessing the power of patients' tumor-resident lymphocytes, TIL therapy has shown promise in delivering durable, complete responses for patients who have progressed with other treatments, including checkpoint inhibition. This form of personalized medicine has traditionally been limited to select academic facilities with the infrastructure and resources to generate TIL cells and care for patients during the treatment phase.
