Near-ultraviolet (NUV)-LEDs grown on a patterned sapphire substrate embedded with 300 nm SNs show a three times higher light output power than that without SNs, when measured through the top side. For far-field emission measurements, the LEDs embedded with 300 nm SNs show the significant increase of front emission due to the improved crystal quality of epitaxial films as well as the increase of Mie scattering effect of SNs.

Radiation therapy for variety of human solid tumors utilizes mechanism of cell death after DNA damage caused by radiation. In response to DNA damage, cytochrome c was released from mitochondria by activation of pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 family proteins, and then elicits massive Ca(2+) release from the ER that lead to cell death. It was also suggested that irradiation may cause the deregulation of Ca(2+) homeostasis and trigger programmed cell death and regulate death specific enzymes.

However, factors contributing to this sudden increase have not been fully elucidated, and few studies have explored the postoperative prognosis. The Thyroid Cancer Longitudinal Study (T-CALOS) was initiated with three aims: (1) to identify factors predicting quality of life, recurrence, and incidence of other diseases after thyroid cancer treatments; (2) to investigate environmental exposure to radiation, toxicants and molecular factors in relation to tumour aggressiveness; and (3) to evaluate gene-environment interactions that increase thyroid cancer in comparison with healthy participants from a pool of nationwide population-based healthy examinees.

A reduced graphene oxide (GO) layer was produced on undoped and n-type GaN, and its effect on the current- and heat-spreading properties of GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) was studied. The reduced GO inserted between metal electrode and GaN semiconductor acted as a conducting layer and enhanced lateral current flow in the device. Especially, introduction of the reduced GO layer on the n-type GaN improved the electrical performance of the device, relative to that of conventional LEDs, due to a decrease in the series resistance of the device.

Methods: A total of 152 patients with thyroid cancer (mean age = 44.9 ± 13.
Purpose: This study was done to assess the bone mineral density (BMD), biochemical bone turnover markers (BTMs), and factors associated with bone health in young Korean women.
Methods: Participants were 1,298 women, ages 18-29, recruited in Korea. Measurements were BMD by calcaneus quantitative ultrasound, BTMs for Calcium, Phosphorus, Osteocalcin, and C-telopeptide cross-links (CTX), body composition by physical measurements, nutrients by food frequency questionnaire and psychosocial factors associated with bone health by self-report.
Background: Over the past several decades, there has been a rapid worldwide increase in the prevalence of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) as well as a number of changes in the clinicopathological characteristics of this disease. BRAF(V600E), which is a mutation of the proto-oncogene BRAF, has become the most frequent genetic mutation associated with PTC, particularly in Korea. Thus, the present study investigated whether the prevalence of the BRAF(V600E) mutation has increased over the past two decades in the Korean population and whether various PTC-related clinicopathological characteristics have changed.

Methods: The respiratory amplitude and period of the free, the audio device-guided, and the complex system-guided breathing were evaluated in eleven patients with lung or liver cancers. The dosimetric parameters were assessed by comparing free breathing CT plan and 4 DCT-based 30-70% maximal intensity projection (MIP) plan.
Background: Abdominal wall free flaps are used most frequently in autologous breast reconstruction, and these flaps require intact and robust deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) vessels. Pfannenstiel incisions are often present during preoperative visits for breast reconstruction and could potentially signal compromised blood supply to the lower abdominal wall. In this study, we compared the number of DIEP vessels between patients with and without Pfannenstiel incisions undergoing autologous breast reconstruction.

Design: We carried out an observational study in a prospective cohort.
Methods: The study included a total of 344 SCH and 2624 euthyroid participants aged over 40 years and who were without previously recorded CVDs were included in this study analysis.
Objective: With the recent increasing rates of screening for thyroid cancer, the cancers now tend to be smaller and less aggressive than those that are diagnosed when presented with symptoms, suggesting changes in the clinical validity of conventional prognostic factors for outcomes. We performed the retrospective study to identify the secular trends in the prognostic factors of thyroid cancer.
Methods: We used medical records of 3147 patients diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) at the Seoul National University Hospital Thyroid Cancer Clinic between 1962 and 2009.

The Mn(III)-hydroperoxo intermediate is characterized with various spectroscopic methods as well as with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, showing the binding of a hydroperoxide ligand in an end-on fashion. The Mn(III)-hydroperoxo species is a competent oxidant in oxygen atom transfer (OAT) reactions, such as the oxidation of sulfides.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) is defined as a reversible, acute ventricular dysfunction without any evidence of coronary artery obstruction. There have been reports of TTC caused by emotional or physical stress, drug use, hormone imbalance, or medical conditions such as pulmonary disease, sepsis, and trauma, but a relationship between TTC and pulmonary tuberculosis has not previously been reported. From our knowledge, this is the first report of TTC caused by pulmonary tuberculosis.

ZnO is a wide band-gap semiconductor with piezoelectric properties suitable for opto-electronics, sensors, and as an electrode material. Controlling the shape and crystallography of any semiconducting nanomaterial is a key step towards extending their use in applications. Whilst anisotropic ZnO wires have been routinely fabricated, precise control over the specific surface facets and tailoring of polar and non-polar growth directions still requires significant refinement.

Mitogen-activated protein kinase phosphatase-3 (MKP-3) negatively regulates ERK1/2 MAPK in a feedback loop. However, little is known about the molecular mechanism by which Ras signaling induces MKP-3 expression. In the present study, we demonstrate that exogenous expression of constitutively active H-Ras increases the level of MKP-3 mRNA.
