Introduction: The widely employed Kidney Donor Profile Index (KDPI) scoring system, designed for assessing deceased donors (DD), plays a pivotal role in predicting graft function post kidney transplantation (KT). Given the dynamic nature of renal function, including serum creatinine (sCr), in managing DDs, it remains uncertain optimal timing to use KDPI for assessing postoperative graft function.

Methods: In this retrospective review, we assessed 246 DDs who were managed within a donor management program from January 2010 to December 2021.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most fatal form of brain cancer in humans, with a dismal prognosis and a median overall survival rate of less than 15 months upon diagnosis. Glioma stem cells (GSCs), have recently been identified as key contributors in both tumor initiation and therapeutic resistance in GBM. Both public dataset analysis and direct differentiation experiments on GSCs have demonstrated that CREB5 is more highly expressed in undifferentiated GSCs than in differentiated GSCs.

Autophagy is a degradative pathway that plays an important role in maintaining cellular homeostasis. Dysfunction of autophagy is associated with the progression of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Although one of the typical features of brain aging is an accumulation of redox-active metals that eventually lead to neurodegeneration, a plausible link between trace metal-induced neurodegeneration and dysregulated autophagy has not been clearly determined.

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a heterotrimeric serine/threonine kinase comprising α, β, and γ subunits. AMPK is involved in intracellular energy metabolism and functions as a switch that turns various biological pathways in eukaryotes on and off. Several post-translational modifications regulating AMPK function have been demonstrated, including phosphorylation, acetylation, and ubiquitination; however, arginine methylation has not been reported in AMPKα1.

Background: Double-lumen endobronchial tube (DLT) displacement, defined as migration of the DLT > 15 mm from optimal position, may threaten patient safety. Lateral decubitus positioning (LDP) of the patient can induce DLT displacement; however, little is known regarding the predictors for DLT displacement after this maneuver. Obesity may further aggravate DLT displacement by distorting mediastinal anatomy, but no comprehensive data exist concerning the impact of obesity on DLT displacement after LDP.

Preconditioning nerve injury enhances axonal regeneration of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons in part by driving pro-regenerative perineuronal macrophage activation. How these macrophages influence the neuronal capacity of axon regeneration remains elusive. We report that oncomodulin (ONCM) is produced from the regeneration-associated macrophages and strongly influences regeneration of DRG sensory axons.

Article Synopsis
  • White colony-forming yeasts (WCFYs) can negatively impact kimchi's sensory quality by forming white colonies on its surface, but their toxicity has not been well-studied.
  • Research involving cell and animal experiments showed no harmful effects from WCFYs at high concentrations, with no signs of cell damage or toxicity observed in human intestinal and liver cells or in rat studies.
  • Genomic analysis indicated that the yeast Pichia kudriavzevii lacks genes associated with toxicity and antimicrobial resistance, suggesting that consuming WCFYs through kimchi is safe and does not pose a health risk.
