Comparison of high-flow nasal oxygenation and standard low-flow nasal oxygenation during rigid bronchoscopy: a randomized controlled trial.

Background: The efficacy of high-flow nasal oxygenation (HFNO) in improving oxygenation is influenced by several factors, and its effectiveness is not always guaranteed. Therefore, we aimed to compare the effects of HFNO and standard low-flow nasal oxygenation during rigid bronchoscopy in the apneic patients.

Methods: All patients were administered general anesthesia with full muscle relaxation and were randomly assigned to receive either HFNO (HFNO group) or standard low-flow oxygenation (Standard group).

Introduction: Optimizing vascular access for hemodialysis in end-stage kidney disease is crucial. This study compares outcomes between elbow and upper arm (UA) basilic veins for forearm loop AVGs, highlighting the potential benefits of the UA basilic vein to improve patency and feasibility in patients with poor elbow veins through retrospective analysis.

Prediction of hearing recovery with deep learning algorithm in sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

This study aimed to establish a deep learning-based predictive model for the prognosis of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). Data from 1108 patients with SSNHL between January 2015 and May 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients underwent standardized treatment protocols including high-dose steroid therapy and hearing outcomes were assessed after three months using Siegel's criteria and the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) classification.

Nationwide analysis of EVAR explantation outcomes in Korea: A comprehensive dataset study.

Objective: Endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR) is the primary treatment for abdominal aortic aneurysms, constituting 70%-80% of interventions. Despite initial benefits, long-term studies show increased mortality. Using nationwide data, this study assesses outcomes of EVAR, open aortic repair (OAR), and EVAR explantation (EE) in Korea, while exploring characteristics of late open conversion, including the rising EE incidence.

Optimal Timing of Serum Creatinine Measurement for KDPI Scoring to Predict Postoperative Renal Function in Deceased Donor Kidney Transplantation.

Introduction: The widely employed Kidney Donor Profile Index (KDPI) scoring system, designed for assessing deceased donors (DD), plays a pivotal role in predicting graft function post kidney transplantation (KT). Given the dynamic nature of renal function, including serum creatinine (sCr), in managing DDs, it remains uncertain optimal timing to use KDPI for assessing postoperative graft function.

Methods: In this retrospective review, we assessed 246 DDs who were managed within a donor management program from January 2010 to December 2021.

Complete genome sequence of probiotic 7409N31 isolated from a healthy Hanwoo calf.

7409N31 was isolated from the feces of a healthy 11-day-old Hanwoo calf from a farm in Geochang-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. The genome of the strain was completely sequenced using the PacBio RSII sequencing system, and it was confirmed that it was composed of one circular chromosome. Comparison between Sugammadex and Neostigmine after Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery-Thymectomy in Patients with Myasthenia Gravis: A Single-Center Retrospective Exploratory Analysis.

This single-center retrospective exploratory analysis evaluated the effects of sugammadex compared with neostigmine on postoperative recovery in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS)-thymectomy. This retrospective study included 180 patients with MG, aged >18 years, who received sugammadex (sugammadex group, n = 83) or neostigmine-glycopyrrolate (neostigmine group, n = 88) after VATS-thymectomy between November 2007 and December 2020. Inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) adjustment was performed to balance the baseline characteristics between the two groups.

AMPK is involved in intracellular energy metabolism and functions as a switch that turns various biological pathways in eukaryotes on and off. Several post-translational modifications regulating AMPK function have been demonstrated, including phosphorylation, acetylation, and ubiquitination; however, arginine methylation has not been reported in AMPKα1.

Eculizumab as rescue therapy in a kidney transplant recipient with atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome: a case report.

Impact of obesity on double-lumen endobronchial tube displacement after lateral decubitus positioning.

Background: Double-lumen endobronchial tube (DLT) displacement, defined as migration of the DLT > 15 mm from optimal position, may threaten patient safety. Lateral decubitus positioning (LDP) of the patient can induce DLT displacement; however, little is known regarding the predictors for DLT displacement after this maneuver. Obesity may further aggravate DLT displacement by distorting mediastinal anatomy, but no comprehensive data exist concerning the impact of obesity on DLT displacement after LDP.

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum PMO 08 has been used as a probiotic starter culture for plant-based fermented beverages, with various health-promoting effects such as cholesterol-lowering and anti-inflammatory activities. This study aimed to analyze the genome sequence of Lp. plantarum PMO 08 and identify its safety and probiotic characteristics at the genomic level.

Driving pressure-guided ventilation and postoperative pulmonary complications in thoracic surgery: a multicentre randomised clinical trial.

Background: Airway driving pressure, easily measured as plateau pressure minus PEEP, is a surrogate for alveolar stress and strain. However, the effect of its targeted reduction remains unclear.

Methods: In this multicentre trial, patients undergoing lung resection surgery were randomised to either a driving pressure group (n=650) receiving an alveolar recruitment/individualised PEEP to deliver the lowest driving pressure or to a conventional protective ventilation group (n=650) with fixed PEEP of 5 cm HO.

Preconditioning nerve injury enhances axonal regeneration of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons in part by driving pro-regenerative perineuronal macrophage activation. How these macrophages influence the neuronal capacity of axon regeneration remains elusive. We report that oncomodulin (ONCM) is produced from the regeneration-associated macrophages and strongly influences regeneration of DRG sensory axons.

Ipsilateral dual kidney transplantation in an elderly patient with severe atherosclerosis: a case report.

Dual Kidney Transplantation (DKT) has been developed to improve outcomes from transplantation based on extended criteria of donors (ECD) and demonstrated excellent short-term outcomes. We performed DKT at Samsung Medical Center in March 2021. The donor was a 74-year-old male with no history of known underlying diseases but died from traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Effects of Iloprost on Arterial Oxygenation and Lung Mechanics during One-Lung Ventilation in Supine-Positioned Patients: A Randomized Controlled Study.

Patients undergoing one-lung ventilation (OLV) in the supine position face an increased risk of intraoperative hypoxia compared with those in the lateral decubitus position. We hypothesized that iloprost (ILO) inhalation improves arterial oxygenation and lung mechanics. Sixty-four patients were enrolled and allocated to either the ILO or control group ( = 32 each), to whom ILO or normal saline was administered.

Kimchi intake alleviates obesity-induced neuroinflammation by modulating the gut-brain axis.

A high-fat diet (HFD) induces low-grade, chronic inflammation throughout the body including the hypothalamus, a key brain region involved in the control of satiety and energy expenditure in central nervous system (CNS). Kimchi is a traditional fermented Korean food, which is recognized as a healthy food. In this study, we evaluated its ability to suppress the obesity-induced inflammation in mice fed an HFD.

Effects of Iloprost on Oxygenation during One-Lung Ventilation in Patients with Low Diffusing Capacity for Carbon Monoxide: A Randomized Controlled Study.

The protective mechanism of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction during one-lung ventilation (OLV) is impaired in patients with a low diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO). We hypothesized that iloprost inhalation would improve oxygenation and lung mechanics in patients with low DLCO who underwent pulmonary resection. Forty patients with a DLCO < 75% were enrolled.

Antitumor activity of a lectibody targeting cancer-associated high-mannose glycans.

Aberrant protein glycosylation is a hallmark of cancer, but few drugs targeting cancer glycobiomarkers are currently available. Here, we showed that a lectibody consisting of the high-mannose glycan-binding lectin Avaren and human immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1) Fc (AvFc) selectively recognizes a range of cell lines derived from lung, breast, colon, and blood cancers at nanomolar concentrations. Binding of AvFc to the non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines A549 and H460 was characterized in detail.
