Semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots (NQDs) are considered an attractive candidate for use in optoelectronic applications due to the ease of band gap control provided by varying the particle size. To increase the efficiency of NQDs when practically applied in devices, researchers have introduced the concept of coupling of NQDs to one-dimensional nanostructures such as single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), which have a ballistic conducting channel. In the present study, NQDs of CdSe core and CdSe/ZnS are used as light absorbing building blocks.

Determination of malignant and invasive predictors in branch duct type intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of the pancreas: a suggested scoring formula.

Prediction of malignancy or invasiveness of branch duct type intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (Br-IPMN) is difficult, and proper treatment strategy has not been well established. The authors investigated the characteristics of Br-IPMN and explored its malignancy or invasiveness predicting factors to suggest a scoring formula for predicting pathologic results. From 1994 to 2008, 237 patients who were diagnosed as Br-IPMN at 11 tertiary referral centers in Korea were retrospectively reviewed.

Three Brassica rapa metallothionein genes are differentially regulated under various stress conditions.

The expression profiles of three Brassica rapa metallothionein genes (BrMT 1-3) were determined in 7-day-old seedlings exposed to various exogenous factors including plant hormones, heavy metals and abiotic stresses. BrMT1, BrMT2, and BrMT3 were representatives of MT gene type 1, type 2, and type 3, respectively, according to their cysteine alignment. BrMT2 showed a relatively higher basal expression level compared to BrMT1 and BrMT3 under normal conditions.

Methods: We analysed the returned questionnaires from 118 freshmen of graduate medical students.

SiO2 doped Ge2Sb2Te5 thin films with high thermal efficiency for applications in phase change random access memory.

This study examined the various physical, structural and electrical properties of SiO(2) doped Ge(2)Sb(2)Te(5) (SGST) films for phase change random access memory applications. Interestingly, SGST had a layered structure (LS) resulting from the inhomogeneous distribution of SiO(2) after annealing. The physical parameters able to affect the reset current of phase change memory (I(res)) were predicted from the Joule heating and heat conservation equations.

Role of metabolism by intestinal bacteria in arbutin-induced toxicity in vitro.

A possible role of metabolism by intestinal bacteria in arbutin-induced toxicity was investigated in mammalian cell cultures. Following an incubation of arbutin with intestinal bacteria, either Bifidobacterium longum HY81 or Bifidobacterium adolescentis, for 24 h, its aglycone hydroquinone could be produced and detected in the bacterial culture media. The bacterial growth was not affected up to 10 mM arbutin in the culture medium.

G109T polymorphism of SLC22A12 gene is associated with serum uric acid level, but not with metabolic syndrome.

SLC22A12 gene, encoding urate transport 1, has been known to be responsible to urate metabolism. This study sought to determine the association between the novel G109T polymorphism in SLC22A12 with serum uric acid and the development of metabolic syndrome in Korean male subjects. A total of 132 healthy male subjects were enrolled in this study.

We investigated the anatomical location of the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) in the human brain using diffusion tensor imaging. Forty normal healthy subjects were recruited. To confirm the boundary of the PPN, we analyzed the superior cerebellar peduncle and medial lemniscus using DTI-Studio software.

Left circumflex artery (LCX) related acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has been known to be under diagnosed with 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG). Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children is a frequent disease for which optimal diagnostic methods are still being defined. Treatment of OSA in children should include providing space, improving craniofacial growth, resolving all symptoms, and preventing the development of the disease in the adult years. Adenotonsillectomy (T&A) has been the treatment of choice and thought to solve young patient's OSA problem, which is not the case for most adults.

Transplantation of human cord blood-derived endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) is reported to contribute to neovascularization in various ischemic diseases. However, the possible beneficial role and underlying mechanisms in diabetes-impaired wound healing have been less well characterized. Bcl-2 interacting cell death suppressor (Bis), also known as Bag3, has been implicated in anti-stress and anti-apoptotic pathways. In a previous study, we observed a significant induction of Bis in reactive astrocytes of the rat hippocampus after transient forebrain ischemia. Background: Whether low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) is superior to unfractionated heparin (UFH) in acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stents (DESs) remains unclear.

Methods: A total of 3,372 STEMI patients who underwent primary PCI with DESs received either LMWH (n = 1,531 patients, subcutaneous enoxaparin 1 mg/kg, bid for 3-5 days plus reduced dose of UFH [50 U/kg] during PCI) or UFH alone (n = 1,841 patients, intravenous bolus injection of 5,000 U, followed by 24,000 U/d infusion for at least 48 hours).
