Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) employs diverse mechanisms to subvert host immune responses, contributing to its infection and pathogenicity. As an immune evasion strategy, KSHV encodes the Membrane-Associated RING-CH (MARCH)-family E3 ligases, K3, and K5, which target and remove several immune regulators from the cell surface. In this study, we investigate the impact of K3 and K5 on lymphotoxin receptor (LTβR) ligands, LTβ and LIGHT, which are type II transmembrane proteins and function as pivotal immune mediators during virus infection.

Background/aim: Regulatory T cells (Tregs) play a crucial role in inflammatory responses by regulating the activity of various immune cells. M2 macrophages induced by IL-10 and TGF-β exhibit anti-inflammatory functions and induce Treg differentiation. Although the beneficial effects of 3-bromo-4,5-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (BDB) on various diseases have been widely reported, the mechanisms, through which it alleviates allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) via Tregs and macrophages, are not well understood.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment is a growing concern leading to a focus on PFAS occurrence in biosolids, a byproduct of wastewater treatment processes, often applied to improve soil health. This led to the need for analytical method development for assessing PFAS in biosolids. This study compares three methods for PFAS quantitation, evaluating solvent extraction, clean-up techniques, and final injection solvents.

Purpose: Fentanyl, a highly lipophilic opioid, was developed as a sublingual fentanyl tablet (SFT) for the management of breakthrough cancer pain (BTcP), and its efficacy and safety were confirmed in a randomized, controlled study. We investigated the effectiveness and safety of SFT administered to alleviate BTcP in a real-world setting.

Materials And Methods: In this prospective, open, single-cohort study, conducted in 13 referral hospitals in South Korea, opioid-tolerant cancer patients receiving around-the-clock opioids for persistent cancer pain were enrolled if the individual had BTcP ≥ 1 episode/day during the preceding week.

The functional specialization of CD4 T lymphocytes into various subtypes, including T1 and T cells, is crucial for effective immune responses. T cells facilitate B cell differentiation within germinal centers, while T1 cells are vital for cell-mediated immunity against intracellular pathogens. Integrin α4, a cell surface adhesion molecule, plays significant roles in cell migration and co-stimulatory signaling.

Patients with immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) like rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are at higher risk for severe COVID-19 and long-term complications in bone health. Emerging clinical evidence demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2 infection reduces bone turnover and promotes bone loss, but the mechanism underlying worsened bone health remains elusive. This study sought to identify specific immune mediators that exacerbated preexisting IMIDs after SARS-CoV-2 exposure.

Article Synopsis
  • Inpatient hospices (IHs) showed potential to reduce distress and financial burden for terminal lung cancer patients, but findings on cost savings and medication use were inconsistent.
  • A study analyzed data from 31,139 Korean patients who died between 2017 and 2020, focusing on hospitalization costs and medication use depending on the timing of their first hospitalization before death.
  • Results indicated that IHs had lower costs during the final 30 days of life but no difference in total costs for the year before death, and they prescribed significantly more opioid analgesics and other symptom-oriented medications compared to non-IHs.

Background: Periostin and human chitinase-3-like protein 1 (YKL-40) have been suggested to be involved in the development of airway fibrosis and remodeling. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum periostin levels and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and between serum YKL-40 levels and AHR in children with asthma, comparing periostin as a marker for Th2 inflammation and atopy with YKL-40.

Methods: The study involved children aged 6-15 years, comprising 75 with asthma and 29 healthy controls.

Objectives: This study investigates the synergistic effect of combining the TLR7 agonist Imiquimod with either the Nod2 agonist (muramyl dipeptide; MDP) or commensal bacteria as nasal vaccine adjuvants to enhance immunity against respiratory viruses.

Methods: Mice assessed immune responses, including antibody and cytokine profiles, after intranasal immunization with antigen and adjuvant combinations. BMDCs were cultured with these components to measure cytokine production.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) may interact with peroxisome proliferator activated receptors (PPARs) and alter lipid homeostasis. Using , we investigated the effect of PFAS on (a) lipid homeostasis and whether this correlated to changes in body and hepatic condition; (b) the expression of hepatic genes regulated by PPAR; and (c) the hepatic lipidome. We chronically exposed tadpoles to 0.

  • Maxillectomy, a surgical procedure for head and neck cancers, often leads to a high rate of ophthalmic complications due to its effects on the eye area, with this study evaluating such issues over a 20-year period at a university hospital.* -
  • In a cohort of 101 out of 163 patients who had undergone maxillectomy, 95.6% experienced at least one ophthalmic complication, with the most common affecting the cornea/conjunctiva (56%), eyelids (48.4%), and the lacrimal system (38.5%).* -
  • Factors influencing these complications included orbital floor resection and radiotherapy, with many patients requiring additional surgical interventions, like tissue

  • Asthma and COPD are significant health issues globally, with inhalation therapy being a key treatment method.
  • This study focuses on optimizing dry powder inhalers (DPIs) by addressing particle aggregation through advanced techniques, aiming to enhance drug delivery efficiency of formulations combining budesonide and Arformoterol.
  • Results showed that optimized formulations resulted in substantial therapeutic improvements in asthma models, with AFT demonstrating similar efficacy to Formoterol at a lower dose, and both drugs exhibited promising in vivo behavior and drug delivery efficiency.

  • * Conducted on 39 SC patients, it found that various nuclear receptors were present in tumor cells, with glucocorticoid receptors the most common, while specific glucose transporters showed high expression, indicating potential targets for therapy.
  • * Key findings suggest that hormonal and metabolic factors influence SC progression, identifying low androgen receptor levels and high monocarboxylate transporter 1 expression as indicators of poor survival outcomes, highlighting their potential as therapeutic targets.

Purpose: We assessed human papillomavirus (HPV) genotype-based risk stratification and the efficacy of cytology testing for cervical cancer screening in patients with atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS)/low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL).

Materials And Methods: Between 2010 and 2021, we monitored 1,237 HPV-positive women with ASCUS/LSIL every 6 months for up to 60 months. HPV infections were categorized as persistent (HPV positivity consistently observed post-enrollment), negative (HPV negativity consistently observed post-enrollment), or non-persistent (neither consistently positive nor negative).

Background: High-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC), which is known for its heterogeneity, high recurrence rate, and metastasis, is often diagnosed after being dispersed in several sites, with about 80% of patients experiencing recurrence. Despite a better understanding of its metastatic nature, the survival rates of patients with HGSOC remain poor.

Methods: Our study utilized spatial transcriptomics (ST) to interpret the tumor microenvironment and computed tomography (CT) to examine spatial characteristics in eight patients with HGSOC divided into recurrent (R) and challenging-to-collect non-recurrent (NR) groups.
