Inhibitory activity of organobismuth compounds, triarylbismuthanes 1 and their dihalides 2 and 3, was examined against jack bean urease. Besides triarylbismuth dichlorides 2, triarylbismuth difluorides 3 and bismuthanes 1 exhibited the activity. Of all these compounds, triphenylbismuth difluoride 3a and tris(4-fluorophenyl)bismuth dichloride 2b showed the highest activity.

Article Synopsis
  • Antifungal activity of organobismuth(III) and (V) compounds was tested on the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, revealing a strong relationship between chemical structure and effectiveness against yeast growth.
  • Specific compounds, particularly triarylbismuth dichlorides and halobismuthanes, showed significant inhibition, while others like triarylbismuth difluorides were ineffective regardless of their substituents.
  • The high activity of certain halobismuthanes was linked to their unique seven-coordinated geometry that enhances binding with key biomolecules involved in yeast growth.
