Objectives: To investigate the health-related quality of life (HRQL) of long-term survivors of inoperable esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) treated with definitive radiation therapy, the real-world trends in the use of advanced radiation techniques, and their impact on the survival outcomes of ESCC patients.

Methods: In this multicenter retrospective observational study, the medical records related to demographics and treatment of ESCC patients who were treated with definitive radiation therapy at 14 provincial hospitals in China from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2016 were analyzed. A HRQL questionnaire was completed by survivors and collected by doctors at the final follow-up.

Background: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling pathway plays a fundamental role in regulating cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, migration, and so on, which are associated with tumor development, including the esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of microRNA-binding sites with target genes in the EGFR pathway could lead to alteration in the combination of microRNA with target genes and contribute to the susceptibility of cancer.

Methods: A case-control study including 494 ESCC patients and 494 controls was carried out to investigate the genetic susceptibility of 4 microRNA-binding site SNPs (rs712 in the binding site of KRAS to let-7, rs8904 in the binding site of NFBIA to mir-507, rs3738894 in the binding site of protein kinase C epsilon to mir-218, rs701848 in the binding site of phosphatase and tensin to mir-1304) as well as the interactions of gene-environment in the development of ESCC.

Neoadjuvant therapy improves long-term locoregional control and overall survival after surgical resection for esophageal cancer, and neoadjuvant chemotherapy (nCT) or neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) are commonly used in clinical practice. Nimotuzumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody against epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), the efficacy of nimotuzumab added to nCRT for esophageal cancer is uncertain. We conducted this retrospective study in which combining neoadjuvant treatment of nimotuzumab with chemoradiotherapy (Nimo-nCRT) is compared with nCRT and nCT for patients with potentially resectable locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Yet, no meta-analysis investigated the association of two common polymorphisms of miRNA, mir-499 rs3746444 polymorphism and mir-149 rs2292832 polymorphism, with cancer risk in the Chinese population.
