Albumin-Lymphocyte-Globulin-C-Reactive Protein Index as a Novel Prognostic Biomarker for Hepatocellular Carcinoma after Hepatectomy.

Introduction: This study evaluated the performance of the albumin-lymphocyte-globulin-C-reactive protein (CRP) (ALGC) index as a novel prognostic biomarker for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after hepatectomy.

Methods: Patients (n = 178) who underwent hepatectomy for HCC (July 2010-December 2021) were analyzed. The ALGC index was calculated as ([albumin × lymphocyte]/[CRP × globulin × 104]).

[Operative Technique for Gastric GIST According to the Tumor Location or Growth Pattern].

Gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor(GIST)is rarely accompanied by lymph node metastasis. Therefore, partial gastrectomy generally proceeds with good indication for laparoscopic surgery. However, surgical procedures can be complicated by the tumor location or growth type.

Hyperbilirubinemia as a predictor of severity of acute appendicitis.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the clinical significance of preoperative hyperbilirubinemia in Japanese patients and to assess its clinical potential as a predictor of the severity of acute appendicitis.

Methods: We studied 318 patients with appendicitis who underwent appendectomy between July 2010 and June 2017. We analyzed preoperative data including age, sex, white blood cell count, C-reactive protein (CRP) level, fever, peritoneal irritation signs, and serum total bilirubin level as potential risk factors for complicated (perforated or gangrenous) appendicitis, using multivariate analysis.

Ten Cases of Colovesical Fistula due to Sigmoid Diverticulitis.

Colovesical fistula (CVF) resulting from colon diverticulosis is a comparatively rare disease, and neither the diagnosis nor treatment has been established. Our experience with CVF due to sigmoid diverticulitis over a 9-year period was reviewed to clarify the clinical presentation and diagnostic confirmation. Ten patients with CVF were identified in this period, and chief complaints, laboratory findings, presenting symptoms, diagnostic investigations, and subsequent treatments were reviewed.

Analysis of surgical outcomes of diverticular disease of the colon.

We analyzed retrospectively the surgical outcomes of diverticular diseases of the colon at the surgical division of Fukuyama Medical Center. Data were collected from 39 patients who underwent surgery for diverticular disease at Fukuyama Medical Center. Thirty-nine patients were admitted between 2005 and 2010.

Late resistance to adenoviral p53-mediated apoptosis caused by decreased expression of Coxsackie-adenovirus receptors in human lung cancer cells.

Adenovirus-mediated wild-type p53 gene transfer induces apoptosis in a variety of human cancer cells. Although clinical trials have demonstrated that a replication-deficient recombinant adenovirus expressing the wild-type p53 gene (Ad-p53) is effective in suppressing growth of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), we often experienced late resistance to this treatment. To elucidate the mechanism of late resistance to Ad-p53 in human lung cancer cells, we generated 5 different resistant variants from p53-susceptible H1299 NSCLC cells by repeated infections with Ad-p53.
