In this study, the concept of rheo-optics was applied to explore the flow birefringence induced by the stress components along the camera's optical axis since it is often overlooked in the traditional theories of photoelastic flow measurement. A novel aspect of this research is that it involved conducting polarization measurements on simple shear flows, specifically from a perspective in which a shear-velocity gradient exists along the camera's optical axis. A parallel-plate-type rheometer and a polarization camera are employed for these systematic measurements.

Previous studies suggest that the behaviour of impacting blood is similar to that of a Newtonian fluid, which has a shear viscosity equivalent to that of blood at high shear rates. To understand this important fact, we conducted comparative experiments of droplet impact on a glass surface using whole blood and three solutions with a shear viscosity similar to that of blood.

Temporal evolution of cavity shape, stress intensity field, and stress vector field during the injection of a conventional injection needle, a proposed highly focused microjet (tip diameter much smaller than capillary nozzle), and a typical non-focused microjet in gelatin were measured using a state-of-the-art high-speed polarization camera, at a frame rate up to 25,000 f.p.

At a cavitation number of 0.36, where cavitation is expected to occur, our high-speed videography captured the traveling jet and cavitation bubbles while the oil microdroplets in ouzo after different runs of impact were visualized by an optical microscope.

This so-called dielectrowetting effect holds great potential in controlling the spreading of droplets by varying the strength of the electric field. In this paper, we experimentally and theoretically study the effect of the dielectrowetting on the dynamics of droplets impacting on a solid surface having electrodes to impose the non-uniform electric field to the liquid.

The final size of the droplets is determined by both the flow and solution conditions for a given substrate. In this work, we investigate the growth dynamics of surface nanodroplets during solvent exchange by using total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (TIRF).

The focused jets are created from the impact on a liquid-filled cylindrical tube at cavitation numbers of 0.37 (strong impact where cavitation is likely to occur on unprocessed surfaces) and 2.

An intuitive interpretation of this event might label an impulsive force as the culprit in this fracturing phenomenon. However, high-speed photography reveals the formation and collapse of tiny bubbles near the bottom before fracture.

However, in spite of its great potential and research history over many decades, these systems are not commonly used. One of the main problems is that existing methods use diffusive jets, which result in scattered penetration and severe deceleration of the jets, causing frequent pain and insufficient penetration.
