Effects of interfacial interactions on the electrocatalytic activity of protein-tethered bilayer lipid membranes (ptBLMs) containing cytochrome oxidase (CO) for the oxygen reduction reaction are studied by using protein film electrochemistry and surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopy. Mammalian CO was immobilized on a gold electrode via self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of mixed alkanethiols. The protein orientation on the electrode is controlled by SAM-CO interactions and is critical to the cytochrome (cyt ) binding.

is one of the predatory bacteria; therefore, it can act as a novel "living antibiotic," unlike the current antibiotics. Here the predation of by was inhibited in the presence of . This study investigated whether -induced predation inhibition is associated with bacterial quorum sensing (QS).

Quorum sensing (QS) in coordinates the expression of virulence factors, some of which are used as public goods. Since their production is a cooperative behavior, it is susceptible to social cheating in which non-cooperative QS deficient mutants use the resources without investing in their production. Nevertheless, functional QS systems are abundant; hence, mechanisms regulating the amount of cheating should exist.
