This chronic inflammation can cause liver dysfunction, liver abscess, and even bile duct cancer. Objectives: Thoracic reintervention is a common treatment; however, preventing adhesion of the lung to the thoracic cavity wall remains a problem. This study aimed to investigate the effect on pleural adhesion of covering the postoperative pleural injury site with cross-linked gelatin glue (gelatin plus glutaraldehyde, hereafter 'gelatin glue') and to evaluate the proliferation of healing cells on gelatin glue.

Introduction: We analyzed the frequency spectrum of two neonatal sleep stages, namely active sleep and quiet sleep, and the relationship between these sleep stages and autonomic nervous activity in 74 newborns and 16 adults as a comparison.

Method: Active and quiet sleep were differentiated by electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns, eye movements, and respiratory wave patterns; autonomic activity was analyzed using the RR interval of simultaneously recorded electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. Power values (LFa, absolute low frequency; HFa, absolute high frequency), LFa/HFa ratio, and the values of LFn (normalized low frequency) and HFn (normalized high frequency) were obtained.

To create more useful, effective and safer anti-adhesion materials, we developed a thermally cross-linked gelatin film. In this study, we examined the physical properties of the film such as the physical strength and the adhesiveness to reveal the handling properties and biological properties, such as the anti-adhesion effect, the influence on cell proliferation, and the cytotoxicity to reveal the anti-adhesion mechanism, especially in comparison with the conventional hyaluronic acid and carboxymethylcellulose film (the conventional film). A tensile test under dry and wet conditions and shearing stress test showed that the gelatin film has significant higher maximum tensile stress and fracture strain than the conventional film.

In order to prevent postoperative adhesion and the related complications, a thermally crosslinked gelatin (TCG) film was developed and the basic biological properties were examined, paying special attention to the relationship between these properties and the extent of crosslinking of the film. The gelatin films crosslinked thermally for five different time periods (0, 1, 3, 8, and 14 hours) were developed and the following tests were performed. Regarding the material characterization of the films, the water content, the water solubility, and the enzymatic degradation for collagenase were found to be closely related to the duration of thermal crosslinking.

We investigated the SMF effects on hemodynamics in the caudal artery-ligated rat as an in vivo ischemia model using noninvasive near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) combined with power spectral analysis by fast Fourier transform. Male Wistar rats in the growth stage (10 weeks old) were randomly assigned into four groups: (i) intact and nonoperated cage control (n = 20); (ii) ligated alone (n = 20); (iii) ligated and implanted with a nonmagnetized rod (sham magnet; n = 22); and (vi) ligated and implanted with a magnetized rod (n = 22). After caudal artery ligation, a magnetized or unmagnetized rod (maximum magnetic flux density of 160 mT) was implanted transcortically into the middle diaphysis of the fifth caudal vertebra.

Epidemiologic data have demonstrated associations of sleep-onset insomnia with a variety of diseases, including depression, dementia, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Sleep initiation is controlled by the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus and endogenous melatonin, both of which are influenced by environmental light. Exposure to evening light is hypothesized to cause circadian phase delay and melatonin suppression before bedtime, resulting in circadian misalignment and sleep-onset insomnia; however, whether exposure to evening light disturbs sleep initiation in home settings remains unclear.
