A 61-year-old man in Japan with abdominal pain was suspected of having a renal tumor. Despite initial treatment, his condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to death. Postmortem examination revealed a renal abscess and sepsis caused by Porphyromonas gingivalis.

- Previous research has linked a high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) to severe outcomes and poor prognosis in COVID-19 patients; this study focused on those with cardiovascular diseases or risk factors (CVDRF).
- Out of 601 patients analyzed, in-hospital mortality rates rose significantly with higher baseline NLR quartiles, indicating worse survival outcomes for those with elevated NLR values, although baseline NLR was not an independent prognostic tool.
- Follow-up NLR showed better predictive accuracy for in-hospital death (area under the curve of 0.893) compared to baseline NLR (0.682), highlighting the importance of monitoring NLR changes over time for assessing patient prognosis.
A 73-year-old man receiving hemodialysis and antiplatelets was admitted with a mild case of COVID-19. Heparin was added, and iliopsoas hemorrhage developed. He was successfully treated by interventional radiology.
